Does anyone else suffer from migraines in pregnancy and have to take meds for it?

I am only 7 weeks and really careful about what I 'do' pregnancy wise, but yesterday I had a severe headache which would have turned into a migraine (I suffer with them normally- not just in pregnancy).

I took 1g paracetamol at about 8am, but it came back at about 6pm so had to take another 1g. Then woke up in night in agony literally shaking with the pain and sickness so had to take yet another 1g.

Am worrying today as that is a LOT of paracetamol to have taken, hope it hasnt harmed the baby .

My usual medication is co-codamol which I find really effective but the codeine in that is not good either.

Hi, yes me - I only really get them in pregnancy and have had them both times but I get bad ones with numbness, visual loss, speech problems, vomiting etc so I've been taking medication throughout the pregnancy.

I take paracetamol and dihydrocodeine which is basically codydramol as codeine as codeine makes me throw up (about 30% of people get this side effect but its a pain). I would worry about the paracetamol at all and would suggest taking to your doctor about the cocodamol as it is used in pregnancy when needed and it would be worth talking about it so you know whether you would feel comfortable having it as back up if you needed to take it.

Avoid ibuprofen (neurofen), aspirin, voltarol (diclofenac) etc in pregnancy though.

Hope they don't happen too often, I hate migraines

I suffer from migraines too and am generally a very headachey person. I can't take my usual meds when pregnant either (sumatriptan), but my g.p prescribed co codamol, and said it is fine to take except right at the end of the pregnancy. I suffered really bad headaches in both my pregnancies, but each time they stopped at about 20 weeks and after that I was headache free. In fact my migraines didn't return until I stopped breast feeding.

May be worth checking with your gp that they are happy for you to continue with the cocodamol? Plus you can get your prescriptions free now you are preg.

Yep, my doc said that codeine was ok too. He also said that if mine continued that he'd prescribe Immigran, but I wouldn't want totak it anyway. I'm 33 weeks, btw.
