Just had a membrane sweep & am an emotional wreck

Have just had a membrane sweep done, & have being crying for the past half hour. Am now really scared about having to be induced, & the whole labour process. Didn't have a good labout experience last time round with DD.

I recently read if you are fraught/stressed you won't go into labour as you need to feel safe and relaxed for it to happen - that's what NCT book says anyway.

I had a rough time with DS3 and am worried already about birthing again in April.

Hopefully someone else will have something useful to say.

fernie3 · 13/01/2010 14:26

I am sorry you are feeling so down . All labours are different and chances are you will have an easier time this time. I dont know if you were induced with your DD but I was induced with my last two children (and wasnt for my first) and actually had 2 very good experiences with induction,so its not all bad .

I would focus on relaxing, and just think perhaps you baby is on its way?! (being tearful etc I have heard is a sign of labour on its way!)

good luck

Big hug!

Try to think of the baby... you are so nearly there. Is there someone in RL who you can talk to/hug?

notnowbernard · 13/01/2010 14:30

Sympathies to you

Agree you need to try and relax!

Can you have a long hot bath? Is someone around to give you a massage? Concentrate on the feet, is meant to help get labour going

somanyboyssolittletime · 13/01/2010 14:33

Poor you. Firstly, second time around is nearly always better than the first - not met anyone yet who that wasn't true for.

Secondly, when I had a membrane sweep with DC3 I felt incredibly emotional afterwards - then promptly went into labour. It could just be that you feel the process has begun, or your body may be releasing lots of hormones!

Take care, and good luck - it will all be fine.

DH is on the end of the phone, & is being great. DD came on time, so being overdue & having a sweep is a new experience!

my 2nd labour was induced and it was a realy great experience. much better than my first which was spontaneous.
(we'll not go into the 3rd )

Anyway just remember that whatever happens that baby is coming out one way or another, and however that happens you will ave a beautiful baby at the end of what may be a wonderful/painless/special/agonising/painful etc etc (delete as you wish) experience.

Why are you so upset after the sweep, any particular reason or just general pg hormones?

notnowbernard · 13/01/2010 14:37

What did your mw say about the sweep?

MamaLazarou · 13/01/2010 14:38

Ah bless you darling. Have a big cup of tea and a nice warm bath. Be nice to yourself.

roxy12 · 13/01/2010 14:46

i had a sweep at 9.00am on the 25th june 09 and i went into labour at 7.00pm that night.

my midwife said to me i was very soft and stretchy and i was 4cm dilated. what did your midwife say to you?

dont be scared or upset. just relax and take it as it comes. have a nice bath and get into your jim jams and just relax!

Just think you will have a gorgeous little baby by the end of all this!

chin up.

Babybear1 · 13/01/2010 14:47

Thanks everyone!
Don't know why I'm so upset, mosschops, am thinking it's the hormones!
MW said I was already 2cm dilated & has booked me in to be induced next week. But fingers crossed it'll start soon.
Think a cup of tea sounds good!

babybear. I had a terrible labour experiance with dc1.... 3rd degree tear etc and was petrified when i went into labour with dc2. However i told the midwife and she was wonderful. She listend to me and if something wasnt working for me we just did it differently.
Ok so labour is pleasent but that was too horrendous! hth.

ajandjjmum · 13/01/2010 15:10

I'm sure you'll be fine, but I was induced for both of mine, and it was really OK.

whelk · 13/01/2010 15:12

Babybear I had a sweep with both of my dds. In fact two with dd1. I was also induced with dd1 and had a 30 hour labour with dd2 but I can assure you that the sweeps were the worst bits.

Its horribly invasive, painful and just unpleasant! Perfectly normal to be tearful about that.

Its done now, what about a nice bath, with some nice bubbles and soothing music.

MarineIguana · 13/01/2010 15:14

You poor thing. You need to look after yourself, relax in a warm bath, treat yourself, magazine/takeaway/glass of wine, whatever works for you.

Just the other night I met a woman who'd had a hard time first time round but has just enjoyed a fantastic second birth where she felt in control and positively enjoyed it. It can happen. Wishing you lots of luck.
