Yes, totally normal to start feeling bigger at this stage, even if you haven't put on any/much weight yet.

madwomanintheattic · 11/01/2010 20:27

oh yes. but you'll just look fat for another couple of months lol, until the bump starts looking like a bump and not like too much christmas indulgence!

with my first i had to start wearing maternity uniform for work at about 12 weeks as i couldn't get into my normal work gear. it was faintly blush-inducing, like i was making some sort of 'pregnant' statement, but i genuinely couldn't get any buttons or zips done up...

pipinmybelly · 11/01/2010 20:41

yeh thats how i feel - FAT!! glad its normal, iv already had my dating scan so know all is well with the baby (its not a bean anymore!!) so its just growth from here on in!!

I'm almost 11 weeks (10+6)(first baby) and none of my jeans fit anymore, on last pair of work trousers that still comfortably fit, pretty much living in leggings!! And I've lost weight cuz of sickness, I just seem to be rounding out a bit, not feeling so much bloated like I did a couple of weeks ago either, just "bigger" now.

People really must think I ate all the Christmas pies!! Haha! Oh and boobs are sooooo sore, bought my first maternity bras at the weekend so I don't have to wear underwire anymore as that is just making it worse.

My mum said that she was in maternity trousers by 12/13 weeks with all 3 of us, so I must be going the same way as her!!! Quite looking forward to a bump now, so I look pregnant rather than just plumper! haha

Fayzal · 11/01/2010 21:35

Just wanted to let you all know that you're all completely normal. Around the 12week mark is about normal for starting to feel 'fat' and it does last a little while before you feel you look pregnant. I'm now 14 weeks with my second and feel huge but it can take a bit longer to expand with first ones.

Boobs have been sore through both pregnancies but I've found it better to keep wearing underwire bras just getting bigger in size every few weeks! Some people say you shouldn't wear underwire but I cannot see what difference it makes if I'm more comfortable.

BusyMissIzzy · 11/01/2010 23:27

I went on holiday at 13 weeks and couldn't fasten my trousers or skirt! And my boobs went up a cup size almost straight away. Took another 2 months or so before I got a proper bump.

Ozziegirly · 11/01/2010 23:46

I feel fat already and I"m only 8 weeks!

I think it's because before pregnancy I was v strict with myself over food, ran 5k 3-4 times a week plus did weights.

Now I'm eating sandwiches, cheese, snacks, and running is too painful on my boobs. I feel like I right blob already.

I look forward to a bump just so I don't look chubby. I need a new bra already!

Ozziegirly · 11/01/2010 23:47

"a" right blob.

Can't type either.

Spirael · 12/01/2010 09:09

Hi Ozziegirly! [waves]

I'm in a similar situation, I was really strict with my diet and exercise before becoming pregnant and got myself down from a size 14-16 to a size 10-12 over the previous year, which was great.

Then I got pregnant, morning sickness started and I had to pretty much eat constantly in order to function. Not healthy things either, fruit and veg didn't work, I was pretty much on heavy carbs. The 9-10 week period was awful, I felt horribly bloated and was back into my largest clothes again. A year of effort destroyed in a month!

However, for the last few weeks the morning sickness has finally eased off and I can control it now by snacking on fruit and veg, which makes me feel better. Also helped the horrific constipation, which slimmed me down a bit once everything was moving again inside~!

I'm still on my larger clothes and just started with some maternity trousers this week, but they are size 12 so I evidently haven't gained as much weight as I feared. I've also not really gained too much weight anywhere else, like I had when I was much bigger, so I'm hoping that the regular clothes size increase was mostly bloating.

In answer to pipinmybelly's original question (sorry - got distracted ), I'm 13 weeks with my first and definitely thicker around the middle than I was, though still don't have a bump that would be called a bump by anyone except me and DH. However, hopefully it's only a matter of time..!

My chest is also swollen and sore, has been so for weeks. I'm going to risk getting fitted for some new bras this week I think, in the hope that I don't suddenly expand any more and have to start over again!

woowa · 12/01/2010 09:29

I was in maternity jeans at 12 weeks. My normal ones just dug in the bottom of by tummy too much. We didn't tell anyone but by 16 weeks someone was congratuating us...so we thought we'd better start saying something then. I must have looked pregnant, not fat, by then!

Tigresswoods · 12/01/2010 09:38

I found the Bump Band really helpful for this time of pregnany. I didn't feel right in maternity wear and I also had to keep wearing my suits for work so the BB was perfect.

I think it was one of the best things I bought during pregnancy and it has really worked for me.

first1 · 12/01/2010 10:01

I was in maternity jeans at 11 weeks and this is my first! My MW said you start showing much earlier if you're slight to begin with. Now 22weeks and feel like a whale!

TishTosh21 · 12/01/2010 10:31

Im just over 13 weeks and showing, im quite tall and slim anyway so guess it would show up more on me,family members didnt realise I was pregnant but when we told them they suddenly notice the little bump! Tends to get bigger as the day goes on as well then by the morning its small again.

Ozziegirly · 12/01/2010 11:06

Hey Spirael!

Yes, it feels really weird that I after years of looking after myself, going to the gym and watching what I eat I feel like I have just let myself go!

I"m sure my knees look fat, and I'm sure I even caught sight of cellulite on my arm for goodness sake. But this may have been a trick of the light as I couldn't replicate it....

Weirdly all my clothes still fit ok, it's like I am just a bit bloated everywhere and have lost all muscle tone.

Still, it will be worth it - we can lose it again and it's rather nice to eat cheese sandwiches guilt free....

TottWriter · 12/01/2010 13:13

Yeah, I'm only a few weeks further than you and I've been in maternity wear for what feels like ages now. I'd say it's perfectly normal. I feel and look like I ate all the pies, but that's the same as last time, when I didn't actually look pregnant (as opposed to fat) until about five or six months. Some women look pregnant early, some don't, so don't panic.

And getting 'fatter' early on is perfectly normal. I noticed the difference, and I can't say I've ever been all that careful about my diet (DS keeps me thin-ish!)

SmilerJane · 12/01/2010 14:21

hi there..
with my 1st DS i was a size 6 to start then by 3 months i looked 6mths preg.. in that pregnancy i went from size 6 to 18 round my tummy.. i had so many stretch marks because i grew so fast so quick my tum looks like tiger print lol all the way up past my belly button.. with my DD i didnt show as quick n was only a size 14 by the time i had her..
this is my 3rd pregnancy n i'm only approx 12/13wks (waitin on scan on thurs to tell us exact dates) but i already cant fit in2 my trousers.. i'm now in size 12 trousers even tho i constantly throw up everything n have gone down from 8st 2 7stone in 2mths n i still got a long way to go yet...
so yes its normal.
i found that at home i'm more comfy in baggy t-shirts sports bras n loose cotton trakky bottoms n only wear jeans tight clothing etc out..
good luck in your pregnancy chick

neenz · 12/01/2010 14:22

With my first I was also a fitness fanatic before becoming pregnant. When I was about 3 months we couldn't use our shower for about 2 weeks so never really got naked to wash, I remember the horror of seeing proper love handle fat on my hips when I went to use it after those 2 weeks!

This time I've eaten like a right pig as it's been Christmas, and I'm taking the stance that it's the last time I'll be pregnant and able to eat what I like when I like. The health and fitness will return after this little one.

blueberry69 · 12/01/2010 21:35

I'm 15 weeks with my first and have been feeling quite large for a few weeks now - finally gave in at the weekend and bought some maternity jeans as my normal jeans were beginning to cut in a bit too much for comfort.

Wondering why i didn't do it sooner - soooo comfortable and so far no-one seems to have noticed they are maternity trousers! Maybe they are just thinking I've let myself go a bit!

pipinmybelly · 13/01/2010 19:32

thanks ladies!! another one for u...is it normal to feel more sick than ever now too!! woke up last night and couldnt get back to sleep coz i was so uncomfortable due to nausea...feeling really shitty, run down, tired, dizzy...is this the worst it will get!! didnt get up til 10 today and im ready for bed already! xxx

Mw said to me today that bad sickness is a sign of a healthy pregnancy even though that dont help how your feeling.
i feel terrible atm and have 2 DC to look after too and a double birthday to plan for the 23rd lol.. it will get better eventually.
good luck in your pregnancy hun

kitcat1977 · 13/01/2010 22:13

I was 11+1 on our wedding day and I had a belly!

Fayzal · 14/01/2010 22:39

nausea is a bugger. I had it with my 1st and thought it couldn't get any worse but it's been much worse this time round. I'm now 14 weeks and it is easing off. It started really early this time and has worn off a bit earlier too. Sometimes it can take until 16 weeks or so to subside. I think SmilerJane is right, I've heard it's a sign of a healthy pregnancy too. Doesn't make sense does it when you feel so rough! Just do what you can, I found eat little snacks almost constantly helped, if I never got hungery or too tired it was better. Also if I ask some crackers or something the minute I woke up I felt better. Hope that helps.
