I have been to the doctors this morning for a chest infection and have been given trimethoprim. When i got home and read the leaflet it says not to take if you are pregnant or breast feeding. I did tell the doctor i was pregnant (8+4) and he still gave me this. I suppose my question is would you take anyway or should i hope it clears on its own?

NOT IN THE FIRST 12 WEEKS. It is anti-folate in the way it works so significantly raised your risks of neural tube defects.
It is ok afterwards, but many don't prescribe it at all just because it's so important not to take it in the first 12 weeks.
This is actually negligent - please don't take it, and if you can get to a different dr, I suspect they will be as horrified as I am.

yes absolutely

ring GP NOW and ask for something different - a chest ifx that needs antibs shouldn't be neglected

(am mildly intrigued as to what led them to prescride trim in the first place - are you allergic to penicillin?)

Thanks for the quick response notevenamousie! This isnt the first time this doctor has prescribed inappropriate medicine which is why i thought i would check the leaflet! Good job i did! Wont be taking in now - thanks! xx

Thanks, have just rung doctors and they said they will ring me back as they have all gone home! I hav no idea why they didnt give me penicillin - i have no allergies and am not on any other medication. Would like to know what they have to say when they ring back - i told them a friend was shocked when i said what i was prescribed!!!

It sounds bad from your GP. And am aware it's Friday - but if you feel bad chest-wise, ring out of hours GP, if needed, or maternity unit (a long wait, I know) - don't take it. I am sorry you are being put through this. Hope you have support at home if you feeling rough.

Trimethoprim isn't even the best thing for a chest infection.

I had it recently and the out of hours nurse was very, very clear, asked twice in fact if I might be pg as it's contraindicated in early pregnancy.

I had it for a UTI.

I had amoxycillin I think when pg for a chest infection.

Do you have a nearby walk in place?

tah2 · 08/01/2010 23:22

Thanks for all the concern! I had a phone call from a different and lovely doctor who gave me a prescription for amoxycillin. I was sure to make him aware that i had mentioned to the first doctor on several occassions that i was pregnant so i hope he got a telling off!!!
