what are muslin squares used for...been looking at nursery sets and saw muslin squares but have no idea what they are used for!! can someone enlighten me please!!

They also make very good tea towels in an emergency .

YOu put them over your shoulder wehn you iwnd your baby, and they protect your clothes for ending up with baby sick on.

I used to put them under my babies head in the moses basket so I didnt' have to change the sheet 3 times a day.

I have a feeling they were originally used as nappy liners, but I may have made that up.

You can use them as newborn nappies too - they are def the thing that got the most use round here

They are soooo versatile, as detailed above and indispensable. You will need more than you can imagine.

So useful, primarily for mopping but for much more besides. I have a lovely pic of dd at around 10 months wearing one as a makeshift hat. Knotted in the corners like an old man's handkerchief.

Covering shoulders when burping baby.

Mopping up sick.

Emergency baby wipe for bums or faces when teamed with a little water when caught short.

Boosters in cloth nappies.

Mopping spilled drinks on the carpet.

Floor cloth.

Anything really once kids were older.

Will get new ones of course for DC4.

All of the above then great dusters.

Couldnt live without them. Woolies used to do value packs of 10 for a few quid. Now my two are older, I use them for wiping the damp windows in the mornings

Thanks for the enquiry winjy. I have wondered the same thing, as have heard endlessly about them but never seen them (I live in Mexico).

For all of the above, I used old t-shirts and blouses that I cut up and sewed. They work just fine. I wouldn't bother buying any myself even if I could now.

So good that I won't give mine away, even though I don't use them anymore!

Am going to have to claim some back for no 3 from dd who uses them as doll's blankets.

plus, once dcs are older their uses change to:

as hankies

to have in handbag with wipes to dry hands for fussy toddlers who don't like to have wet hands

to wash up with when you can't find a clean dishcloth

to mop up condensation from the insides of windows on chilly days

as pretend teatowels, towels, dishcloths, bedding, rugs, curtains...the list goes on......

I have some lovely unused ( although washed ) girly pink ones if you want them, i agree with all the above but bought soooo many lol

i bought some, but didnt really think i'd use them, but have used them loads.
i also have one in the nappy bag.

also they wash really well.

Nobody has mentioned using them to catch the excess if you end up with a bit TOO much milk at first! I used to tuck one into my bra when feeding DS for the first few weeks, otherwise it would end up soaking wet... and for catching the squirts of milk if he came off unexpectedly!

Lots of toddlers seem to end up using them as comfort blankets too... woe betide me if I go to visit SIL and accidentally wipe up a spill with the wrong muzzy

My 7yo niece still takes one to bed and on car journeys Very easy comforters as there are unlimited stunt doubles

We have found them so useful.
DD loved to hold one when dozing off. Agree with all the uses listed below pus they make good impromptu bibs if you forget one when your out.

Never out without one in my bag and DD is 17mths.

Rockbird - I agree that's a great idea. Wish I'd thought of it tbh.
A friend of mine thought of it though, so she could wash the favourite comfort bedtime buddy without dc noticing they were different ones each time. I had to wash ds1's fave teddy by stealth when he had gone to sleep and luckily he was synthetic enough to be dry by the time ds woke up in the morning

Excellent for outer swaddling layer as well, they are not totally smooth and "catch" a bit better than a bunny rug.

FYI - Despite my idealistic protestations that my children would never have a 'special' toy/blankie/comforter dd2 is now 3.3 and still goes to bed with at least 1 bloody muslin a night. I made the mistake of forgetting one the last time we did a whistlestop tour of the rellies in Scotland and Cumbria. My one tip would be to take one EVERYWHERE
