now 5 weeks pregnant on the pill???? happy but HOW? anyone else?

Hi, I've just found out I'm 5 weeks pregnant with baby 2, when my DS is only 8 months and we had agreed no more. Even though I desperately wanted another baby but partner didn't we agreed to stop at 1. He has been very good when told the news and is putting on a brave face but I'm sure he secretly thinks I stitched him up, which is something I just wouldn't do when it comes to children. Has anyone else got pregnant whilst on the pill? I didn't miss one, and didn't have vomit or runs, or antibiotics so can see why he might be thinking it. Just needed reassuance that it does happen as a comlete fluke so if anyone else out there did conceive whilst taking the pill I'd love to know.

I was on the combined pill and we used condoms. I'm now 37 weeks.

Next time DP comes anywhere near me i shall make sure i have not only an implant, but a coil, the mini pill and i'm making sure he's double bagged. And that's before the he has the snip!

I have had two pill babies!

After my dd was born, I was in a bad relationship and decided no more kids with this man. He was very domineering (I am sure you get the jist) so abstinence wasnt an option back then, so I was fanatical about taking my pill on time every day. And yet when my dauhgter was 3 months old I fell pregnant with my son. I had the coil put in after that, but have been with my current partner some years and since he is nothing like my ex husband, I decided to have the coil removed and go back on the pill. OH already has lots of children so we decided none together, and I didnt want any more kids anyway, so we were careful about me taking the pill everyday whilst waiting for oh to have the snip! Hey presto I fell pregnant again! We now have an 18 month old daughter together. The pill I was on had stopped my periods so I didnt even know I was pg til 12 weeks and only found out by accident as I was rather unwell and my gp thought I had c diff (my dad had just passed away from it) but the tests came back as a baby instead! Though I was much happier to have a baby than have c diff lol!

I got pregnant while taking combined pill with DS. Again, no sickness or runs, so it came as a hell of a shock.
I used to work with radioactive source material and had been working a lot with radiation, not knowing I was pregnant... spent the whole time terrified it would have damaged him in some way, but all grand!!

Hope you DH doesn't seriously think you 'set' this up??

But isn't the pill 97% effective?

So every 3 woman out of 100 will get pg every year?

DS1 is a combined pill baby - I wasn't that fanatical about the timings but I did take it every day and hadn't been ill etc. I became pregnant very easily with DS2 and DS3 and have a sneaky sneaky dare-not-mention suspicion that I may be pregnant again after ONE sex session last month when DH withdrew.... Surely not....

I guess if you can conceive quite quickly then you may just be that statistic that shows that its not 100% effective. Your DP may struggle a bit in the beginning but once he DS2 / DD is here he will forget the reasons why he only wanted one. Good luck!

Oddly all the people I know were on the combined pill as well even though it's meant to be more effective than the mini pill but perhaps that's just because more people take the combined pill over the mini pill.

The combined pill is supposed to be 99.9% effective if taken properly (at the same time each day) so according to the stats only 1 women per 1000 will get pregnant each year. But its effectiveness drops to 92% with more typical use (ie taking at different times and occasional missed one).

So yes some women will get pregnant whilst taking it but it should be quite unusual. The mini pill has a much higher failure rate.

Its probably those who are most fertile who do get pregnant whilst taking it... so if you have been caught out with it before its probably not the right conception for you to use in the future.

Although the people on this thread took it properly, there is a high failure rate when not taken properly.

If you are very fertile the mirena coil can be a good bet as its effectively 2 forms of contraception in one - a coil and the mini-pill - apparently its as effective as sterilisation, and there is no user failure (you can't forgot to take it).

just wanted to say thanks for all your comments. I'm sure DP understands and isn't really thinking i did it on purpose but it must be difficult for men as they aren't the ones who know they have taken it correctly, or as correctly as is possible without being obsessive. x

Well if they are worried about that then they should use condoms as well.

Yes and your DP can't be thinking in the back of his mind that you "tricked" him as he knows the condom split and it's not like you could make that happen.
