Can you have a feeling your carrying twins?

Sounds really bloody stupid, and its probably purely because everyone is winding me up that im carrying twins. But now i feel like i am!
Im 13 weeks (scan on the 5th Jan)but my belly is like a bloody 5 month pregnant woman. IT is my 2nd baby and yes the stomach muscles are sooo not what they were before DD. And i haven't scoffed my face, just eaten normally.

Am i being a complete pratt?!

I am always convinced of this (out of sheer fear I think!). I dont think there is anyway of knowing I'm sorry apart from waiting til that scan. Some mums do just know, but many mums worry about it and are just having one and many are totally shocked at the scan.

Are you at an increased chance of having twins?

Maybe its not twins - might be triplets

LouLouH · 29/12/2009 14:41

Argh, god, triplets! Dont say that!

I have two sets of twins in my family and one set of twins in my DP family. Although i have looked into it and identical twins dont run in families (supposedly) and thats what i have on my side. Partners side are fraternal twins, but i think its the womans body that ultimately decided (i think).

I am petrified of the idea, but also think it will save going through the pregnancy thing again in a couple of years!

The only genetic link is through the womans side - and that is for non identical. The woman inherits the tendency to release more than one egg.

Some of the signs are meant to be - fundus appearing over the pelvis earlier than 12 weeks (rather than just bloating etc which is what I have a bad case of!), early movement - sometimes even at end of first trimester, increased sickness and exhaustion...all normal pregnancy things really.

I am quite worried as I am still breastfeeding DD and apparently some studies have shown you are 9 times more likely to have twins this way. EEK!

I've always thought it might be quite nice to save on the pregnancies though

Let us know!

LouLouH · 29/12/2009 14:49

hmm getting me worried now. As it isn't the general bloating thing. I had treatment for emdometriosis a while back so everything has been cleared out also which worries me. I fell pregnant in our first month of trying. I have felt bubble pops (my way of desribing it) not actual wind type either for the last three days.

As for the 9 times more likely! i never knew that! Better keep your legs crossed girlie! lol

I was obsessed about twins. I was wittering on about it constantly from 6-10 weeks. Not that I was having twins as such, but just "as long as its not twin type comments" and telling my friends that I did have a family history of twins etc. For instance one friend that I've known from school (about 20years) said the only time she has ever heard me mention twins was a few weeks ago at 8 weeks.

Anyway went for scan at 10+5 and its twins. Was in complete shock. I had stopped considering it after 10 weeks as I wasn't big and everyone kept on saying you're not having twins. They are eating their words now! My mum was very shocked - she keeps on saying "but how did you know?" I didn't know - but I was quite fixated on the idea. DH says I talked myslef into it!

I'm now 14 weeks and think I can feel movement. Though I'm still not very big. I also was much more nauseaous and tired this time than I ever was with DD1.

My great granny had 3 sets of twins (12 children from 9 pregnancies) and my granny was one of the twins. She was my dad's mum. There has been no twins since (though dad has a few twins cousins) and people talk about the female line so I assumed that I would be ok. It is a lot to do with age (30-35 most suspectible to twins) fertility (very fertile women have more twins - I also concieve very easily) and how many previous children you have (lots of previous prgnancies - more chance of twins!)

Let us know what happens on the 5th!

BertieBotts · 29/12/2009 15:14

The gene for releasing multiple eggs can be passed down on the male or female side, it's just that the father has nothing to do with the eggs! So if your granny (ie your Dad's mum) has the twin gene then you could have inherited it via him.

sobloodystupid · 29/12/2009 15:16

Yes I was convinced twas twins this time round but I was wrong ...

HarktheHeadlessAngelsSing · 29/12/2009 15:21

Friend of mine fell pg this time last year. 3rd pg. She felt rough rough rough. Far worse than she had done with her first two pgs who were just singletons. Her and her DH joked that because she felt so bad it must be twins.

1st scan at 8 weeks. You've guessed it. Twins.

How bad do you feel?

bagpuss · 29/12/2009 15:28

Yes I had a very overwhelming sense that I was having twins whilst in the waiting room waiting for my 12 week scan. Twins confirmed about 10 minutes later by the sonographer .

Re: the bloating though, don't read too much into it, I was bigger in my 2nd and 3rd pgs by 12 weeks than I was in my twin pg. I was very much sicker in my twin pg though and by 13 weeks could feel the top of my uterus above my pelvic bone.

Good luck with your scan what ever happens and do let us know the outcome .

brockleybelle · 29/12/2009 15:40

hi, my friend had twins. When she was in the early stages - pre 12 week scan - she said she could feel a pressure in that area which she hadn't experienced with ds1. she was also showing very early.

PixieOnaChristmasTree · 29/12/2009 15:42

I'm having twins, but the thought hadn't really crossed my mind before the scan.

I did feel bad, though. Although I just thought that it was because I'm really, really old (seriously, double your age and add twenty and I'll still be older !). . .

Maybe you are, or maybe it's quads. . .

peppapighastakenovermylife · 29/12/2009 19:21

Brockleybelle - I have been saying the exact same thing for the last couple of weeks. Where my womb would be feels very very full and I keep getting sharp stretching pains in the area.

I did not get this with either DD or DS and you

I also feel very very bad. I had hyperemesis both times before and its started again. However I also feel really very dizzy and light headed - like I am going to faint most of the time. Again I didnt feel like this before...

EEEK!

decafgirl · 29/12/2009 22:00

Ah, it's so nice to read all you other ladies thinking along the same lines as me! I am verging on obsessed that it'll be me that has them out of our circle of friends. Four of us met through our 1st DC and 2 have gone on to have their 2nd babies (both singletons)...there's twins all over my family...did you know you can insure yourself?! It's true! When you get your BFP and before a scan you can pay a one off fee and if you find out it's twins they'll give you about £1500 and the double that if it's more than twins...anyone tempted?

BTW, I'm not even pregnant yet!

peppapighastakenovermylife · 30/12/2009 09:34

How do they know you havent had a scan? Do you have to do it really early on?

I dont actually know anyone with twins at the moment (my mums cousins are but thats it).

LouLouH · 30/12/2009 09:58

decafgirl is that true?? Surely they cant tell that you have/n't had a scan? Sounds bloody good if it is true though. I'll def do it!

HarktheHeadlessAngelsSing Thats what is getting to me the fact that i feel soooo crap this time round! I had nothing literally no signs with DD only a growing bump. But this time, i've got wicked nausea, exhaustion, nearly passed out in Debenhams two days ago, really dizzy spells, back pain like you would believe (i have a bad back anyway but didn't expect trouble with it till at least 20 weeks) extremely full feeling in lower abdomen (def above pubic bone!)

I know each pregnancy is supposed to be different, but come on, this different!

Maybe i am just having a giant baby boy! My OH is 6ft 2. Im looking for any excuses as not really sure how i would deal with it, let alone how my OH would! We love our BMW coupe! I hate big family cars! lol

I have twins, now 9.

My sister and I both conceived within days of each other purely by chance. Neither of us knew about the other until my sister seemed to miscarry at 8 weeks, but a scan happily showed my nephew still in there and doing well. Sister was told she probably lost his twin.

From that time I wondered idly if I could be carrying twins. By 12 weeks I had a feeling that I was walking around with a bowling ball inside - I hadn't gone to be booked because my sister had a very painful smear the day before she lost dnephew's twin. I knew they'd want to smear me too and couldn't take the risk (and now they no longer do smears in pregnancy).

Then when I did ask for a midwife visit they forgot to send me one! So I still hadn't had any checks at 14 weeks, when I began to feel movement. I would lie in the bath and feel that my fundal height was more than it should be and in my own mind I was sure it was twins, but I didn't say a word to anyone.

Finally at 16 weeks the midwife checked me and listened to a heartbeat. I almost asked if there was another one, but didn't want to look stupid. Then she measured the fundal height - 22 cm, 6 weeks ahead. I was certain now but still didn't tell anyone!

At 17 weeks I had my first scan and the ultrasonographer had barely touched my stomach with the wand before she said 'Two babies!'

Funny thing is they are identical, so don't run in the family at all. Pure coincidence. My sister was wonderful about me keeping twins when she (almost certainly) lost one of hers.

playftseforme · 30/12/2009 10:53

I had an inkling because I felt so awful this time round, and I found out I was having twins at an 8 week scan

Still feel yuk in the evenings at 14 wks!

peppapighastakenovermylife · 30/12/2009 11:08

The thing is - I have felt awful both pregnacnies before and there has been just one in there. This time though I can barely stand up with the dizzyness...should be fun once term starts again (I am a lecturer) . My legs are just really weak - odd.

Loulou strap them to the roof or get a trailer

Insanitybecomesme · 30/12/2009 11:16

I am 32wks with boy/girl twins, three things made me wonder, I got a positive on three tests all before my period was due, with my other 4 dc I knew I was but got negs until at least 10 days late. my morning sickness was on a different scale and a friend came to stay when I was 10 weeks and asked how far along I was without me saying I was pregnant.

I decided though this was all just in my head, until the scan at 11 wks showed two in there.

LouLouH · 30/12/2009 11:17

lol, i'll drive and put the OH in the boot!

peppapighastakenovermylife when are you having your scan? Love the name by the way, i remeber that phase! I had it non stop for 2 weeks on holiday in spain on my DD portable dvd player.

peppapighastakenovermylife · 30/12/2009 11:48

I am only 7 weeks ish and havent even got round to ringing the midwife yet so not for a while. I just have this constant pressure / fullness ...I think I may actually be having a litter...

Sounds like a plan for your DH

LouLouH · 30/12/2009 11:54

peppapighastakenovermylife You'll have to let me know when you have your scan see how we both get on. Tuesday seems like an age away. I can't even eat that much at the moment as my stomach feels full so quickly. Probably a good thing as i haven't put on excess weight. The LO has even put me off chocolate! Can you believe it, my favourite nibble, i was looking forward to the excuse to eat loads!

OP posts:
Geepers · 30/12/2009 11:56

I am 19 weeks with twins and just knew. However, I have carried twins before as well as singletons so knew how I was feeling.
The sheer exhaustion alone was a dead giveaway.
I was so convinced I paid privately for a scan at 5 weeks which confirmed two sacs.

peppapighastakenovermylife · 30/12/2009 12:02

Geepers - thats what is making me question it. I am exhausted - not so much mentally but physically I am wrecked. I had some time away from the DC's this morning, went for a coffee then decided I couldnt walk around the shops for 10 minutes. Its ridiculous - my legs feel like I have run a marathon or something. If anything I am getting more sleep at the moment.

Lou - I will do - most likely last week of January though! Off chocolate? Get to the doctors quick - thats an emergency in my books . Please let us know how you get on...

LouLouH · 30/12/2009 12:05

I know cant believe it, the smell of chocolate makes my stomach turn. My OH even says whats happened to my Lou, who is this woman?! Think he's secretly glad though as i was a heffer whilst pregnant with DD!
