My family are all coming over my house on new years eve, as is tradition. I need some excuses as to why i am not drinking. I was unwell a little while before christmas so have already used the taking anti-biotics excuse over the christmas party season and my excuses are starting to run thin. I am 7wks and was hoping not to tell family until 12 wks. Please let me know of any excuses/reasons you all have used. Ta x

Is your OH going to be there? If he can nip in before anyone else gets you a drink and sort out the rounds for everyone, he can get you vodka and orange (without the vodka) or white wine spritzer (without the white wine) etc. If you DO have one or two (esp if spritzers), it won't hurt. Good luck!

Can't you drink soft drinks/fruit juice and pretend you have a short in it as well? If it is at your house, it's not going to look too obvious.

LoveMyGirls · 28/12/2009 21:12

Can you drink shloer on the quiet?

What do you usually drink? Can you just make it look like your usual drink? Sip one very slowly? Drink same as your dh and keep swapping with him so it looks like your glass is going down/ getting topped up?

Fibilou · 28/12/2009 21:13

Pour yourself a glass of wine and a glass of water. Drink the water and leave the wine. Nobody will notice - we all think people notice what we're doing when they really don't !
If you weren't PG but still weren't planning to drink do you think they'd notice ? Are they on pregnancy alert ?

Fibilou · 28/12/2009 21:14

Or you could just say your pre christmas infection didn't clear up and had come back ?

GracieGirl · 28/12/2009 21:15

Congratulations! Its very difficult when its at your house so you can't even be driving. I used the "my turn to drive" excuse for weeks. And you've already used the antibiotics excuse. I think you'll just have to be very clever with DP/DH and find non alcoholic drinks that look right - apple juice for white wine. Some sort of fizzy fruit flavoured water with a bit of colour for champagne. Cranberry juice for Rose wine, and just hope no one is too observant! I managed to pull this off at about 6-7 weeks and no one even noticed me running off to the loo to hurl every half an hour! DH might end up very drunk drinking any drinks that someone else pours for you. Good luck!

nowwearefour · 28/12/2009 21:16

there isnt a good enough excuse so just have some wine/whatever you would normally drink around and just dont drink it (occasionally pour it don the loo or something or get dh to drink some). if you dont make a big deal of it, noone will clock.

Thanks for all your replies. Im gona try an go with the fake drink suggestions. im hoping apple juice and lemonade will pass as white wine spritzers. if sil and mil follow me into kitchen when i pour drinks - which they usually do i may have to pour a real spritzer and then try to find an excuse to pop back out and swap it for a non alcoholic one! Its going to be a challenging evening, and the added morning/evening sickness is not going to help! wish me luck guys! xxx

Tell them you were out with friends the night before and are very hung over. Claim the smell of drink is killing you and you couldn't possibly face drinking it and that you'll maybe have some later when hopefully they'll all be too merry to notice.
Asda do a sparkling alcohol free wine that's only about £1 and looks really convincing.

Good luck and congratulations.

MERLYPUSS · 28/12/2009 21:55

Twll thwm yo got rat arsed a few days earlier and are in the dog house with OH so promised you would be good. Or drink mixers with missing spirits. Or say you have a dodgy tummy.

Bookswapper · 28/12/2009 22:11

well the tradition in scotland used to be that you dont drink until the bells...by which time every one else is pissed and wont notice

brettgirl2 · 29/12/2009 20:23

Grape juice is really convincing for white wine. If it's at your house that should be easy .

Just make sure you don't down it too fast because it doesn't get you pissed and they may notice that ......

Lotkinsgonecurly · 29/12/2009 20:27

G&T's without the gin! Really refreshing. You could just crack and tell them???

IMoveTheStarsForChristmas · 29/12/2009 20:31

Old wine bottle with grape juice or schloer in? (hide it in a cupboard) and add soda. da daaa..
