Do they ever get the sex wrong?

I have had a 20 week scan and was told we were expecting a girl. I am over the moon. But obviously the sonographer said that she can't tell me she is 100% sure. I would be very happy with a boy but I am now 27 weeks and am starting to worry that she may have been wrong.
Are they ever wrong?

Yes def. My friend was told it was a boy at her 20 week scan, found out at 32 weeks it was a girl.

She already had a boy but was absolutely gutted, as she felt she had lost something and actually grieved for the little boy she was no longer going to have.

As it happens she had the most gorgeous little girl and is such a fabulous mummy. But yes, they def do get it wrong.

Yes, definitely. I have two friends who were told they were having a girl at the 20 wk scan and then ended up with a boy!

Yes, what I was told was DD1 is running around naked at the moment so I can vouch he is definately DS3 instead! (And I wouldn't change him for the world - dreamt I had DS4 last night though )

Of course they do. That's why they say they can't be 100%.

You can only go on what the sonographer said. We were told at 23 weeks with a baby who had her legs wide open, it's 'definitely a girl, 99.9% sure'. Was obviously a girl, even obvious to me.

Did they say how sure they were?

Yes of course they do. Does it really matter if you get a boy instead of a girl though?

My friend was told she was having a girl. She is a real shopaholic, filled the nursery and wardrobe with lovely girlie stuff and got a boy. She is a Midwife who works in the Antenatal Clinic which is why we never asked. I reckoned that if they could get it so wrong for one of their own staff, why bother even asking.

At our scan they said 80% sure it was a girl, but when I was 27 weeks and on holiday I had a bit of a scare as baby hadn't moved for 24 hours so paid for a private scan. They confirmed 100% it was a girl and it was ) Could you pay for a scan further into your pegnancy just to confirm ?

The answer to the previous post is pretty obvious isnt it. They say it's a girl so you prepare mentally for a girl, may buy the odd 'girl' thing etc. But it may play on your mind that it might be a boy, and as a previous poster said it can be a little like a feeling of loss for the sex you thought you were having if they got it wrong. The OP has said she doesn't mind either way

They do get it wrong! The woman in the next bed to me had been told it was a girl (she already had a boy)and so got all girl things-it was a boy!

Er, no. Otherwise I wouldn't have asked would I?

I was told my 3rd baby was a girl but I certainly never "started to worry" that they may have been wrong, even though I already had 2 boys. What is there to worry about if you are "very happy" to have either sex?

Not often, but yes, they do get it wrong.

I know of a few people who have had a big surprise on the day of birth!

My friend had 3 scans 20 weeks + and was told three times she was having a girl. She had to have a section due to position of placenta, and she had a boy....on April Fools day. She thought the doctor was pulling her leg .

If you are worried the sonographer was wrong, then either pay for a private sexing scan or buy neutral items until you have your baby.

Doesnttheturkeydragon have to admit I would think its a bit obvious too.

I (think I) am having a boy - I was told so at my 20 week scan.

Im 36 weeks now and have started to get ready for new arrival (I know, so disorganised!), baby's room does need painting and I was thinking blue, was picking up the little body suits and vests and blankets and would like to get a "boy" theme - I hate yellow!, I know you can get neutral colours and dont necessarily have to pick a gender specific colour but I want to. Anyway, for instance - the grobags in 3 shops today were either very pink or white with blue tractors - they are ?40 each so I would be pissed off if I had the "wrong" one. I couldnt afford it.

We've decided for definate on a boys name and I've related to this baby as a little baby for 4 months now.

I can see how it would worry someone. Definately and I dont care either if it was a girl or boy. Could put my hand on heart and swear I had no preference but I'm used to thinking this is a little boy now..

To op - yep! they can definately get it wrong!

I can see if they say 80% sure its a girl they could get it wrong - but what if they say definately sure?

I already have DD and DS and am not really fussed - sonographer said she was really very sure it was a boy... checked twice and pointed out boy bits to DH.

I'm not worried that it might be wrong as I had a very slight preference for a girl anyway.

To the person who said to pay privately for gender scan well maybe they could get it wrong too?

So yes its unusual but unless you have an amnio its not completely conclusive.

There are myriad beautiful and expressive colours out there. Gender as a theme is my worse nightmare. I do admit that when pg I was quite interested in finding out the gender but realise now more than ever before that it tells you feck all about the baby coming to you.

But then I'm of the 'dress newborn in babygro and cardie in whatever colour's least likely to show milk stains' school of thought.

I don't understand the pink/blue dichotomy anyway. I suppose if you're attached to the notion of one gender following the scan then it's probably very odd for it to be proved wrong but not for long I'd imagine.

We have bought lots of plain white and cream babygros, and a few pale green and yellow ones. The Moses basket is yellow check and the pram is grey and green.

It's been nice buying neutral before the onslaught of blue/pink. Can't say we're in any rush to find out, but can see why people do.

I've been told at 2 scans we're having a girl but they're not prepared to commit.

I will be very disappointed if it comes out a boy. I have always wanted a daughter and we are not having any more children - so if the baby that I have spent the last 4 months thinking of as a girl is a boy I will never get my girl.

I know that other people can't have babies, you should just be grateful for a healthy baby etc etc but I can't help it. While I would get over the disappointment and still love a son as much I can't deny the fact that I will be gutted if it's a boy.

Fibilou, that's very honest of you. It's normal too and quite common. It's important to remember that it's grieving for what you don't have not rejecting what you do if it does happen. It does not make you a bad person. It's a bit of a taboo to admit gender disappointment but it's real and normal.

I have 3 boys and a scan at 19 and 2o weeks by two different sonographers said DC4 is a girl.

Certainly not having any more - this one was a suprise.

Boys2mam - yep! thats 40 euro though so about £36

Is that expensive to you? fecking mental cost of living here. Am sick to death with it, imagine I bought a steriliser up the north for 30 quid which I priced today here for 70. WTF!!! (Ireland)
