Hi, has anyone else had strange cravings ?

I have now with my DC1 and this pregnancy.... I just noticed a week back, that I am obsessed with Sponges again !

I like to lather them up and sniff them , squeeze them and if they are clean in water, put them in my mouth a nd suck the water out.... I feel like an alien !

I remember doing this with sponges in the bath when I was little too !

Its like a lovely reassuring feeling...

Anyone else ?

God, i am soooo embarressed.... but...

Whenever i see a new zesty lime green car, my mouth waters and i get the urge to lick it They look so juicy and zingy and although up to now i've managed to resist, i don't know how much longer i can hold out for....

Door mats. The ones with rubber on the bottom and sisal on top. To chew, sniff and touch. Could do it all day.

Yes, a broooom-brooom car!!!

OK I'm on my third pregnancy. With my first I was obssessed with creosote. I would get up in the middle of the night and wander down our street to steal pick pieces of newly creosoted wooden fences and then would sniff, sniff, sniff them. With my second pregnancy I would think of nothing else but coffee grounds: in a Bodum caftiere. It got to the point when sniffing them and fantasizing about eating them was no longer enough - I HAD to chew on them. Heaven. Of course I would then have to spit them out and rinse my mouth out a dozen times and the sink would be covered in grimey grounds. Oh but the pleasure. With this pregnancy everything was being boringly normal until I hit the 29 week mark and, amazing but true, the coffee grounds craving is back. It is so strange. Actually I've taken to chewing on linseeds which are much better for me (sorts out any constipation issues and full of omega 3 oils).

The whole bath sponge think I can fully understand as when I was a child I used to love chewing on mine.

I just WISH we understood why these odd chewing/licking cravings set in during pregnancy.

I'm not pg, but spotted this in active convos and had to say that I ate sponges when I was pg.
I loved them and had to have some.
I'd cut them up into bite sized pieces to take into work.

I've no idea if they're bad for you but DD is fine, if annoying over 8 years later

I have craved & eaten coal with DSs and with this pregnancy. DH thinks it's discusting but it just is delicious.

Allthe8s · 18/12/2009 17:55

was absolutely obsessed with T zone tea tree face wipes and I would sit there inhaling the lovely fresh clean smell.......when I ran out I was so distraught but made do with the empty packet, but this did cause little scratches on the sides of my nose! Proper addicted and I remember it was like heaven for me. DH thought it was hilarious.

stickybean · 18/12/2009 18:27

Mine is soap, the smell of it when i wash my hands.
Bubbles in the bath, i actually eat these, very odd, hubbie thinks i'm deranged!
Generally just the smell of cleaning products, i want to dive into the washing machine when it finishes a load.

kateyjane · 19/12/2009 00:00

I thought I was the only one! I have to have a particular type of sponge. I then wash it in the washing machine with about four times the recommended amount of Ariel (It has to be Ariel now - it was Fairy with DCs 1-3) Then I suck it and chew it until the flavour has gone and repeat the process. I know it's disgusting and dread to think about all the things that lurk in washing machines!

biggernow · 19/12/2009 14:55

i was obsessed the smell of original Cif and Brasso.....loved cleaning the sink every night.....and then would brasso the chrome in house........now she born I hate the smell.....WEIRD!!! Also loved smell of cheap shoes, wellies and petrol..would get out of car if DH was filling up the car and sniff!! And like stickybean the washing machine after a load- LOVED IT......she seems ok for it............

pinata · 19/12/2009 22:05

I chewed chalk, tonnes of chalk, when pregant with DD. 10-20 sticks a day, used to be awful when it ran out

and coaltar soap. I kept a bar by the bed specifically to sniff

Deemented · 20/12/2009 07:06

I finally admitted my urge to DP today. When he'd stopped laughing he laughed some more and made strange licky noises. Bastard.

HerbalHolly · 21/12/2009 09:24

I have found that my bath sponge has become a major event in my day. I hold it under the water and squeeze all the air out and then squeeze it out and press it over my nose and inhale as deeply as I can the yummy damp spongy smell. Sadly it only works once per bath and I can't work out why. If I repeat the process I don't get the same 'hit' and have to wait til the next day
Good to hear there are some other loons out tere, I thought I was all alone.

Isawlissiekissingsantaclaus · 21/12/2009 09:38

it was vinegar for me, the smell, the taste... i used to have a special mug at work that i would fill with vinegar and hot water then drink it.

not that odd really

designerbaby · 21/12/2009 09:59

Not so odd, but I am eating vast quantities of Marmite. Straight out of the jar, on a spoon...

Should I be worried about the salt content?
