Am currently 7+3 from LMP but due to long cycles reckon I'm probably about a week behind that.
Anyway had a MC in July this year (empty sac at 9 weeks following spotting) and EPU said that if I conceived again I'd be able to have an early reassurance scan.

I'm very nervous about this pregnancy and TBH am almost expecting it to fail. . I really don't have symtoms to speak of other than about a billion +ve tests and a huge appetite (but then that's not unusual.

Anyway went to GP the other day to be told EPU now only offer early reassurance scans to women who have had 2 MC and that I'd have to wait until 12 week scan as normal.

Is this common practice elsewhere? Bit TBH. I know that a successful reassurance scan at 8weeks doesn't guarantee a successful pregnancy, but I think I'd been working towards a scan in the next week or so to hopefully rule out another empty sac.

Sorry for moan, moan, moan - me, me, me. but genuinely wonder if other areas work like this?

The miscarriage rate drops to about 3% at eight weeks if one sees a heartbeat -- so it is a comforting milestone to pass. It then goes down to less than 1% after a successful 12 week scan.

I have had two miscarriages and can completely understand your anxiety. Is there any way you could arrange for a scan privately? I did this and it was the best 100 pounds I have ever spent! The thought of spending weeks on end stressing was too unbearable for me.

Btw, lack of symptoms doesn't mean anything and I am sure all is well! But it's so hard to remain positive when one has had a miscarriage.

Not sure if that's common practice or not.

But given they won't do one, why don't you pay for a scan yourself? We had one at 8 weeks and it cost about £90. Well worth it for the peace of mind to know everything was going well at that point.

I do know how you feel though as I had a miscarriage before falling pg with ds1, and I spent most of my pg with him worrying endlessly (even after having scans!)

tbh though I think you could push the point, either with the GP or with your midwife (who may be more sympathetic?). after all, if it's causing you a lot of stress they may give you one

I had the same issue with getting an early scan.

Dr refused to let me have one early, despite MC 10months earlier. I was told they wouldn't do it at my hospital (Ipswich).
Ended up having an early scan at another hospital (Bury St Edmunds), because I had bleeding at 10 weeks and Ipswich wouldn't see me until the Monday afternoon (this was Friday morning), despite previous MC.

But on the positive side, everything was fine and I'm now 39 weeks!

I had the same - missed miscarriage diagnosed at 12 weeks back in jan. Conceived again in may and was desperate for early scan. Was told no as I'd only had the one miscarriage and it was 'just one of those things' (helpful? ), but they did do my dating scan slightly early at 11 weeks as a compromise. Was planning on going for private scan before that but found that i relaxed abit once i had the scan booked...odd, i know as getting appointment has no affect on outcome of said appointment!! Was fine this time round - due next month, so best of luck and try not to worry.

This is terrible! You should insist on it if you are so worried. I had early bleeding and then more at 16 wks and this is my first pg with no history of MC and I was offered (in fact they insisted on it) a scan on both occasions. Can you speak to your GP and ask s/he refer you for one at 9 weeks as it will be easier for them to see at that stage?

Thanks for your responses. Sorry to all of you who have also had MC. It really takes all the joy and excitment out of being pregnant the next time.
I'm considering the idea of a private scan and hope to have the letter from the hospital soon to confirm the date of my 12 week scan. I too am hoping they'll slot me in a little early but I suppose it'll depend on how busy they are.
A wee update that made me feel a bit better today though - spent the morning feeling sick and just pretty rotten so maybe the elusive symptoms are kicking in.
Spent the afternoon stuffing my face with Maltesers and am now feeling sick again - but in a different way.

It's good to hear everyones success storys with their pregnancies. Fingers crossed.

I have no idea if it's common practice in some areas to not get a scan till 12 weeks, but I had one at 8ish weeks because I genuinely had no idea how far along I was (no periods for 6 months after coming off the pill). Then had another at 12 weeks and 20 weeks as normal. I had no history of miscarriages (this is my first pregnancy). Could you see another GP?

I just wanted to add another reassuring voice to say that no symptoms doesn't necessarily mean a thing. I had literally no symptoms whatsoever with my daughter (apart from getting steadily fatter and hungrier, which as you say isn't exactly unusual) and she is now a bouncing 3 year old. Very best of luck for this pregnancy.

Argghh - another update here.
Just had some blood when I wiped so looks like I'll be phoning the EPU directly on Monday morning after all.

Try not to worry, like I said on my previous post, I had bleeding at 10 weeks (and thought 'here we go again'), but am now 39 weeks and have had no other probs since.

I would be tempted to phone out of hours doc or even just turn up at A+E, you never know they might be able to scan you. Worse case sicenario is they say no, go away, come back monday.

Keep positive and rest until monday.
