im going to my 20 week scan on tuesday and i soo want to find out the sex lol. i do know it depends if baby is co operating. i have a few scans and he/she has been lively. he/she also moves and kicks alot too. so was thinkin if the baby is lively is it more likely to find gender out. thanx

I was told the gender of our baby at the 12 week scan!

At my 20 week scan the sonographer said that she "couldn't see any boy bits but that didn't mean it was a girl and told me that it was inconclusive and not to buy any pink", I was so frustrated! She was a bit of a grumpy lady though and looked like she didn't want to take a gamble and tell us either way! We really wanted to find out so we booked a private scan for 25 weeks and they thought girl too... I am nearly 39 weeks so not long now till we find out if they were right!
Good luck at your scan!

I had a private scan and they could tell quite clearly at 16weeks that there was 3 very definite white lines showing a little girl! But will confirm at the 20week scan. Then again though, my SIL had scans at 20 and 26weeks and baby didnt cooperate at either!

I found out with both of mine. I was told boys and I got 2 boys.

If your baby is moving lots you might have to go back for another like I did so you could have another chance to find out.

At 12 week scan sonographer said they had a policy of not looking at that point because it was easy to make a mistake.

At 20 week scan she said totally sure its a boy (very clear as brand new top of range ultrasound machine) and pointed out the boy bits to DH. Apparently it depends what position the baby is in.

Depends which hospital. I'm using Chelsea and Westminster and they make a real effort to find out for you at 20-week scan. With my first baby they correctly predicted a girl. Currently 21 week pregnant with my second - they managed to predict a boy even though he was very wriggly throughout the scan.

i didn't want to find out with ds1 but with ds2 i knew they were right in telling me i was having a boy as i could clearly see a scanny white image of willy and balls! they took that as a scan pic too so i have the proof! (this was my 20 week scan)

BelleDameSansMerci · 23/01/2010 21:59

They told me at 12 week scan - a girl. I was so pleased and so wanted to make sure that I had 3d scans too and was old so got to check with nuchal fold scan etc. Healthy DD - as predicted. And she used to leap around like a little salmon in there!

i think it depends on the sensitivuty of the machines as well. Nowadays most big city teaching hospitals have modern high res scanners that can normally see at the first scan. With my second ds I had a scan at a London Hospital at 11 weeks where they and we could clearly see a boy! At the 12 week one at my local hospital they couldn't though. By 20 weeks I think they can normally tell everyhwere unless the baby is curled up over that region in which case you might need to persuade them to look again later.

We had a private scan at 12 weeks and were told the sex (75-80% accuracy) apparently at that stage they look at the angle of genital nub...twas very interesting but we are still keeping an open mind till the baby is born (even though I had a feeling it was what the consultant said it was
