Period-type pains at 38 weeks???

Hi, I am 38 weeks pregnant and for the past 24 hours have had continual discomfort in my lower back and front... it feels like period pains. Is this commom in the last few weeks or does it mean labour might not be too far away??? The pain actually woke me up last night and is still here this morning. The "whenis it going to happen" is starting to drive me a bit crazy!!!
Any thoughts would be appreciated... thanks!

Hi maybebaby, same here, backache kept me up last night (though I did manage to get some sleep ) and am still having on and off period pains... I have midwife appointment tomorrow too so I am going to see what she says. I just hired a Tens machine from Boots this morning, which was the last thing on my to-do list so I feel ready now. Though I have just noticed that the pram we collected last week, that we hadn't unpacked yet, is red and not black like we ordered about 3 months ago, so I have to sort that out tomorrow, grrrr!

I'm 40 weeks on Tuesday, and have had this on and off over the last couple of weeks, more so the last few days. So far nothing has happened - no show, no leaking, just feeling odd, twitchy, nauseous and achy. Period-like pains come and go, from being every 20 minutes for an hour or so, to being every 4-5 hours.

I've given up getting excited now, after spending this morning in tears of frustration.

It's so hard to relax and just wait for things to take their course - good luck and hope something happens for you soon!

I think its the body gearing up for labour, softening the cervix etc...when I was 38 weeks pregnant with DS2..I went into be induced and when the MW examined me she said I was already about 2 cms dilated and cervix was quite soft..Id been having strong BH for about 2 weeks and period like pains

Hey Maybebaby, how did your appointment go yesterday? Mine got cancelled and has been rescheduled for wednesday. Lots of back cramps for me this morning not that I believe that actually MEANS anything anymore, haha!
Milkybar cake sounds yum!
Oh yeah, turns out the pram inside the box was black after all despite what the packaging on the outside said... that's one less thing to worry about anyway!
Hope you are ok, still getting any pains???

Hi Lola,

Mine was cancelled too! So i went today instead. Midwife was in a hurry and not very helpful tbh I told her what im feeling and she just said "normal" She did say baby is 3/5 engaged. Ive had more strong braxton hicks today but my back has eased up a bit ! I really do feel that this baby will come very soon, today i have felt really distant and even said to my mum when she came round that i feel like taking myself off to my bedroom and being alone lol I just feel so different. But like you, im not sure any of this means anything anymore!

Yay im glad your pram is the right one and you dont have to take it back afterall. Good luck with your appointment tomorrow and i hope your midwife is better than the one i saw today! Let us know wont you

Hi Maybebaby,
The iron tablets seem to have done the trick, my iron levels have gone up so it should be Ok for a homebirth now, so I'm pleased about that!
I was a bit dissapointed when she had a poke around and said that the baby WASN'T low in my pelvis yet (is that what "engaged" means???)but then she said that that doesn't necessarily mean that baby isn't on it's way as some babys need a few contractions to get them to drop so sometimes it doesn't happen until you start labour. When I told her her about the pains I had been experiencing for nearly a week, she was just a bit vague and said that it is normal.
And then she went on about how first baby's are normally late, which I knew but I was hoping mine might not be, lol!
I have had no pains or twinges today or yesterday... how about you? Are you doing ok???
I am cleaning the house AGAIN though, haha, and have been doing lots of bakng for xmas/ after the baby arrives so I think my nesting instinct is seriously kicking in!
Let me know how you are getting on?

Yup engaged means heading towards the exit Ive had a few braxton hicks but nothing much today. Seems to have settled down! Im glad really as i don't want her to come on christmas day!!

Im also cleaning and baking like a loon, im never still. Got lists as long as my arm, lists about lists and am slowly losing my mind

I know this is a zombie thread but this was the first sign for me. I had DD at 38+1.
