Do babies chew the side of their cot?

Apologies if not the right place for this question but I am looking at cots at the moment and keep seeing ones with plastic covers over the sides - apparently babies chew the wood when they're teething! Is this necessary? Did your baby chew its way to freedom?!

Also - anyone got the Oscar or Anna cots from John Lewis?

Thanks

some do, some don;t - you can buy the plastic strips seperately if you turn out to have a chewer

dd never did, and judging by the state of the cot, none of the three cousins who had it before her did either...

My ds did.
He managed to find tiny sections which were not covered by the strips and had a good gnaw.
Didn't do him or the cot any real harm though.
Buy the cot which you think would best suit your needs.

My 10 month old does, every day, and has done for quite a while. I think the teething guards are a good idea if you have the choice.

There are a good few teeth bites on our cot...cant'remember which child they're from now.....LOL at a child chewing their way to freedom

My DD ignored the side teething rails, preferring to gnaw the veneer from the end of the cot instead .

Yes, my 21 month old has for a while now. We have the Anna cot from JL.

When he started biting the sides and had white paint chips around his mouth I phoned JL asking if they stocked the plastic safety covers. I was told that "due to health and safety" they do not sell them anymore!

Morloth · 01/12/2009 19:38

Yep, the boy did.

I actually remember chewing my cot The weird things you remember... I know I just loved the feeling of the wood crunching between my gums/teeth rather than having it as a form of pain relief!

We have just finished building the "Anna" cot and it's now in the nursery! It looks lovely... I have been wondering about teething rails too!

thisisyesterday · 01/12/2009 20:56

nope mine never did.

midnightexpress · 01/12/2009 20:57

Neither of mine did.

ImSoNotTelling · 01/12/2009 20:57

My DD1 never did. DD2 too small yet...

girlsyearapart · 01/12/2009 21:16

yep both do/did
obviously avoiding the plastic teething rail though..

Bleatblurt · 01/12/2009 21:22

My DS1 didn't but my DS3 did. The rails now have a lovely pattern of two top teeth imprinted the length of it.
