Is it normal for the baby's kicks to hurt?

I am 21 weeks pregnant and today the baby is kicking so hard that it actually hurts! It feels like an electic shock, like the baby is kicking a nerve or something.

A contraction wouldn't feel like this would it?

Can't tell you if its normal or not but I had this once or twice around the 20 week mark. Usually happened after I had been sat for awhile and then got up and walked around. Exactly like a shock as opposed to the soft little kicks I usually get - never lasted more than a second or two. I think it could be tummy muscles being stretched as opposed to baby kicking though. Seems to have settled now (25 weeks). Hope this helps a bit. Call your midfwife if you are worried though.

I get serious whacks. Especially in bed at night. His favourite target appears to be my bladder. He will also kick "back" if my stomach is poked, hard enough to hurt. This is apparently hysterically funny to both DH and DS.

Ds2 was especially bad. Used to try all sort of positions to get him to move to somewhere more bearable. Spent a lot of time at a wedding on all fours because it felt like his feet were wedged under my ribs and stomach.
Dd was really kind to me though - real wriggler now though.

yes they can be very painful! my first pregnancy my DD would stick her feet under my ribs and push up, it was so painful. Thus pregnancy I am getting very hard kicks which hurt and make me jump, and am only 27 weeks so have a lot more to endure!!

Thanks everyone.

Has stopped now. I think he was kicking a nerve as it was the same sensation that you have if a piece of silver paper touches a filling.

yup im 38 weeks now and have fallen over 3 times due to baby either resting or kicking at a nerve and the pain will travel down my leg.
Roll on labour I shall welcome you with open arms!

This does sound like a nerve.
I've had this and it really jolts you!
