Waiting for scan to confirm mc or pg?

Well this is my first post on mumsnet so please bear with me!

I'm having a bit of a rough time, I'm 5 weeks pregnant and have had spotting bleeding for 4 weeks. At first it was just brown and very light with no pain at all, I went to my GP who did an hcg test which was 278. A few days later I had more bleeding and back ache, I was advised by NHS direct to go to A&E. They arranged another hcg test and an early scan at the EPU the following day, however the doctor told us he thought the pregnancy was unlikely to continue.

Prepared for the worst my husband and I went along to the scan. We were amazed when it showed the gestational sac at the size expected for 4 weeks pg and my hcg had increased to 1172. I felt positive about the pregnancy and thought things might be ok. The doctor at the EPU was absolutely brilliant and explained that some people do bleed in pregnancy but at such an early stage they couldn't tell if it would be viable or not and booked another scan for 10 days time.

Unfortunately the bleeding increased after just a few days and I started having terrible cramps and passing clots so I returned to the EPU. I had another scan which showed the gestational sac has grown, much to my surprise. My husband and I really thought I'd had a miscarriaged by this stage. Again we were told it is too early to tell if the pregnancy will continue, it may be that I'm having a natural miscarriage but that they won't scan again for 2 weeks.

I'm now continuing to have the heavy bleeding and pain and feel absolutely exhausted and very emotional.

Has anyone had a similar experience and what was the outcome? Any suggestions of how to get through the 2 week wait?

Sorry to hear you're having such a tough time - I've had 3 mc myself & am currently 10.5 wks pg.
I think that it's not over till the fat lady sings & you should try to remain positive until they tell you otherwise - your previous scans show that what you're experiencing isn't always what's actually going on so fingers crossed your little bean is still growing away. I hope you get some reassurance or closure soon as the not knowing must be terrible. I don't really have a lot to offer, my experiences have been very different but I just wanted to share my sympathy with your situation.
Good luck

funnily enough i was talking to a colleague about this today.
She had very very heavy bleeding from about 4 weeks till about 12 weeks and it was a clot at the other side of her uterus.
The baby was at one side, fine!

She had to wait like you an was in bits, but is now 36 weeks.

me, i am 8 weeks today after 4 mcs, so cant offer much in he way of positive vibes. But this story really cheered me up and gave me hope.

With my first pregnancy I had only just found out I was 5 weeks pregnant when I began to bleed. Much to my horror it started with a gush while I was teaching. I bled for 3 weeks and every type from bright red to dark brown (sorry if tmi). I had a scan at 7 weeks at my epu and everything looked fine. They could give no explanation for the bleed. DD is now 13 months. Fingers crossed for you.xx

Wow thank you sunburntats and bluefootedpenguin your stories have really given me some hope where I thought there was none. Fingers crossed for you too xxx

Just thought I'd update, yesterday's scan confirmed a miscarriage, which is kind of what I had prepared myself for. I've just done a pregnancy test and it's still positive, how long does it take to return to normal?

AntPants1 · 09/12/2009 19:49

I am very sorry to hear that
xx

Sorry dotty....

The HPT will be negative once the HCG comes down to zero.

Will they be doing another scan?

Jewels77 · 11/12/2009 16:43

I had a mc last month and I took a pregnancy test about two weeks after I stopped bleeding, it turned out negative. The scanned showed that I didn't progress past 5 weeks, but the bleeding didn't stop until almost 7 weeks in.

Good luck... and by the way I'm pregnant again. Less than a month after the mc.

That's encouraging to hear Jewels! Congratulations and good luck x
