oh, I thought it was the right hand side.. I've been diligently sleeping on my right for all 3 babies...

woowa · 24/11/2009 10:39

Something to do with blood flow being better to the baby if you lie on your left. I imagine that for the millions of years before that particular advice they got plenty of blood . I am trying to sleep on left, i even have a pregnancy pillow which forces you onto your left, and yet I wake on my right most days!

flybynight · 24/11/2009 10:52

I can't lie on one side all night- my ear gets sore, and so does my hip. I miss sleeping on my tummy, though.

raggie · 24/11/2009 11:25

Left is better than right as blood flows better to uterus/placenta I was told; right is better than back as the weight of baby can blood major artery (vena cava), but any position you can actually get some sleep in, especially in late pregnancy, is fine! Your body will let you know if it's not working i.e. when I'm on back too long I get a bit faint feeling.

I have been sleeping on my left and my baby is lying with her back to the left which mw said is good as she is then unlikely to turn back to back in labour. But who knows if that's why!

raggie · 24/11/2009 11:28

Oh and a spare duvet folded underneath me has really eased the aching hips/shoulder problem for me.

Can't wait to sleep normally again though...come on baby! (39+1 today)

LOL at 'Can't wait to sleep normally again though...come on baby! (39+1 today)'

Raggie is this your first?

heth1980 · 24/11/2009 11:41

It's meant to help get baby in the right position for birth I think.......baby's back should be to your left so lying on your left helps.

bumpsoon · 24/11/2009 11:55

Well mine is lying to the left ,but i can only get comfy on my right side and often wake up flat on my back ,so clearly its doomed

panayiota · 24/11/2009 12:50

Its the left hand because it does not block regular blood flow.I thought that anything besides the right hand side was ok and had spend most early weeks of my pregnancy trying to get used of sleeping at your back .so even while using a special pillow for sleeping on left sideIwake up mostly at my back now!!!

raggie · 24/11/2009 13:30

ledodgy yes it is my first - how could you tell?!

Mama2b5 · 24/11/2009 19:57

i agree on the left is best! my baby so doesnt like it on the right for to long and makes me know it!
sleeping so much better on the left trying to find my comfy spot and settle in as long as i can! apart from the regular toilet trips! oh well not long now

Left is supposed to be better for reasons above but TBH I would go to sleep on my left and wake up on my right - how on earth can you stop yourself when you are asleep?

I would not worry about it too much. If you wake up in the night and you are on your right then just turn over - if you can (I found it impossible to move after about 30 weeks!)
