yep at 41+2 today, different mw tells me that the baby has a big head

Now ds had a biggish head, couldnt fit his newborn hat on him, but not in a bad way, he's never looked like one of those children who have big heads.

am now thinking, god is there something wrong with baby? Is it going to tear me? Will I get it out of my bits?

Is this a normal thing to tell massively pg women?

(mamag ... you need not comment on this thread thank you very much )

Yes, as ds1 crowned. That really made me feel great. Suppose it's what you get for having children with a man who always has to put a slight rip in his Christmas hat because otherwise it won't fit. Never fear, I shall warn my daughter(s) of such men...

blondiep14 · 20/11/2009 17:28

My MW said 'Ooooh Blondie, ouch' when she measured newly born DS's head (37cm)

mosschops30 · 20/11/2009 17:32

ladies you are not filling me full of hope. Did you need episiotomy or stitches etc?

DS3 born last week (at 41 + 5) had head circumference of 38cm which is pretty big but at no point during the pregnancy had the midwife thought he was big. I had a suspicion, because DS2 was much the same.

If you've already had one with a big head hopefully this one won't be any more of a problem.

It's not very helpful to tell you though is it, if they thought the baby was genuinely massive I'm sure they'd be sending you for a scan to check. Most of the time I think any estimates of size are pretty inaccurate anyway.

blondiep14 · 20/11/2009 17:38

Sorry Mosschops!!

If it's any consolation they didn't know DS was huge of head before I had him so your MW could well be talking rubbish. My friend just got told she was having a whopper only to give birth to a wee lass under 7lbs!

I was bruised and grazed with a 2nd degree tear because he got stuck and kept going up and down for a few hours, but within 3 weeks I could sit down again. He is a very chilled out lad so could be why he got stuck rather than his head, I don't think he helped much!

mosschops30 · 20/11/2009 17:38

thanks alana .
I didnt think ds had a big head, but none of his hats ever fit him, I alwasy have to buy a year or two older.
Congrats on the birth of ds 3

blondie I am wincing , was it your first?
I seem to have spectacularly quick 2nd stages (20 minutes and 3 minutes) so hoping hjead wont rip out of me

LadyOfTheFlowers · 20/11/2009 17:40

DS1 and 3 both had head circ 34 and DS2s was 36.

Am preg with DD1 and was scanned today at 19+1 weeks and the head measurements came out indicating she was 20+5 weeks. Dh noticed on the screen - they didn't say anything though.

blondiep14 · 20/11/2009 17:45

It was my first, desperately hoping this one is smaller of head!!
Begining to get cold sweats whenever I go past maternity unit!!
I def couldn't 'stop pushing' when I was meant to, he sort of shot out at that point . Was quite traumatised for a while!!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 20/11/2009 17:47

Meant to add - I tore with the smaller heads and not with the bigger one.

lynniep · 20/11/2009 17:51

you will get it out of your bits!! ds2 born last Weds had 38cm noggin. I only had a 2nd degree tear - nothing major and its healing fine - havent had any issues.
DS was breech and needed episiotomy - that was worse!!

BeehiveBaby · 20/11/2009 17:52

Getting out red book....

BeehiveBaby · 20/11/2009 17:55

DD2 36cm with hand across face and I tore a little but nothing special. Very strange thong for MW to say if not concerned enough to send you for further investigation IMO.

mumof2rugrats · 20/11/2009 18:40

my dd2 was massive all over she was 10lb 6oz and had a big head but to my no cuts,or rips and no stiches

Picante · 20/11/2009 18:44

DD was 38cm.

10 pounds 7 and a half.

She has a massive head.

waitingforbedtime · 20/11/2009 18:53

Another 38cm head here (and now aged 3 in size 9-12 hats ) but I only had a tiny tear and a very easy labour

alana39 · 20/11/2009 20:02

Blimey mosschops very jealous of your short 2nd stages - just look at the bright side that the head is not likely to be hanging around in the ring of fire for very long . Good luck, will watch out for birth announcement and head circumference!

mosschops30 · 21/11/2009 09:59

wow great posts thanks lots of them really reassuring.
I will deffo ask about it again before they induce me tomorrow.
No one else has mentioned it and have seen about 6 different mw's in last few weeks.
