UTI symptoms, no infection- driving me mad!

I'm 30 weeks pregnant. I had several diagnosed utis in the first few months of pregnancy which were treated with ABs, with varying degrees of success.

Since then I have had a constant feeling of having a mild uti. My symptoms are: discomfort in/outside of urethra which feels worse in the morning and for 15 minutes or so after weeing, and frequent urination during the day and night. I am drinking litres of water per day, which does help- I find that if I don't drink water constantly then the discomfort is worse- I guess because it dilutes things.

I was seeing a hospital consultant for a few weeks about this problem, during which time I had a kidney scan which showed nothing untoward, and my urine is being sent off for screening regularly now I am back under midwife led care. But no infection has been found for several months now.

I never experience severe pain, just feel uncomfortable and very aware of things down below much of the time. But it is affecting my sex life, and making me feel quite desperate, particularly when I spend all morning every morning wincing and needing the loo constantly.

I've been taking cranberry extract, and have virtually cut out caffeine (and alcohol of course, though had done that anyway), though I tend to have one cup of tea a day. I don't use perfumed products in my bath and always wear cotton pants. Has anyone else experienced this sort of thing? Was it just in pregnancy or did it continue afterwards? Do you have any other advice to relieve these symptoms? I'll try anything... cutting certain foods out, diet, whatever...

Thanks in advance.

I assume that you have been checked for yeast infection/thrush? This always upsets my bladder for some reason. Although i don't have your history of UTI i was in a lot of discomfort at 30 weeks with similar symptoms and nothing showed up. I don't know what's going on half the time either as i went to a drop in clinic due to painful sex and got tested and they gave me antibiotics for BV but then my partner got tested and had thrush which he can only have got from me. They didn't seem to have an explanation for why the test didn't show up thrush with me... they lost my results too and i had to do it twice. The only other thing i was thinking was a borderline infection that doesn't show up or stress irritating your bladder? I pour ice cold water gently after i go to the loo and that numbs the discomfort for a short while. Let us know how you get on..

Thanks hw, that is helpful. I hadn't even thought about thrush etc and haven't been tested for it.

I have also wondered whether I have a very mild infection, because my symptoms aren't severe. Unfortunately it seems the consultant and my GP both seem satisfied that as nothing major is wrong, they're happy to let me live with it. Boo.

The ice cold water trick sounds very soothing, will try it.

Will keep you posted...

I had same at 30 weeks. Was shocked when the result came back with no infection.

Im just carrying on with water, pure cranberry juice (from health shop - no sugar) and probiotics from health shop. TBH I think the pro biotics have helped most as it has cleared PG thrush and I dont have the imaginary UTI symtoms!

i have had so much discomfort it was driving me mad washing with only water and regular peeing which burned a bit because i was feeling the need to itch went to gp and was told its thrush took the pessary and hoped it would go no sex at all! but then a week later the same thing happened so now im wondering what is up and not happy, DH thinks im obessed and should stop stressing but its not pleasent and im using pads to see if i am having discharge!

Some thrush strains are resistant to a lot of treatments. I have a long history of thrush probs and only treatments that work for me are econazole (gynopevaryl) and miconazole (you can only get this in pessary form in the USA). However, i have no idea if these are safe in pregnancy!! Thrush can be really really horrid to put up with - you should keep persisting with your healthcare provider and take acidophillus in the longterm (probiotics) like whensmydayoff says.

sorry, meant that in response to Mama2b5...

BellasYummyMummy · 20/11/2009 18:29

i also have this, been to the doc LOADS and have had negative tests for both thrush and UTI. though she prescribed me a pessary which didnt seem to do much.

Have had a look at my lady bits with a mirror (as cant see over the bump), and was horrified to see how swollen they were. I think thats why im having so much discomfort when peeing. Doc did mention varicose veins in that area are common in pregnancy, maybe i have that too!!

I'm 15 weeks and for over a week have had the same feeling that had a UTI starting, and more discharge(sorry if TMI ) but went to GP this afternoon and aparently no sign of a UTI - has given me a script for Canestan and said to go to the GU at the local hospital if didn't improve...not particularly helpful! Had thought it could be thrush as diet has been high on the refined flours/sugars stakes for the last few months! Anyone else know if diet helps? (although not sure I am physically able to cut out digestives and bagels yet!)

hw7342 · 21/11/2009 13:27

Hi Cith. In my experience diet does help but over a period of months and this might not be possible for u as i know how i have been so sick if i don't eat exactly what i fancy. Go to the GU hospital as it could be a diff vaginal infection eg BV?

Mama2b5 · 21/11/2009 14:48

Thanks hw7342 -yeh thrush and me have so much history!
BYM - i also did the mirror thing and was also horrified at the sight of very swollen and sore bits! i hope this sorted before labour!!!!!!!
No s.i with DH for ages am feeling quite sorry for him but he says hes fine and hopefully he is not just saying that for me!i also suffer with SPD! legs remaining shut is my usual position always!
Going to the GU is so not plesent its a shame they cant sort you out in the surgery! can you buy BV in the chemist i sure you can, isnt BV like thrush but worse and has a smell? being pregnant how can you tell with big belly blocking

Mama2b5 · 21/11/2009 14:50
