Big fat line - high hcg - twins myth?

hello everyone. I got my BFP on Saturday on CD29 or a usual 28 day cycle.

I suspect I OV'd early but I won't know until a dating scan I suppose.

I used FMU and the line came up hugely fat and dark before I'd even finished my pee. It was a standard Boots stick which I've read are not very good... but I live abroad and don't have much choice.

So... is there any truth to the rumours that such a line can be indicitive of a multiple pregnancy or did I just have super-wee?

I'm 35 and have multiple sets of fraternal and identical twins on both sides of the family.

Congratulations!

I had strong positives before my period was due and have had single pregnancies.

Hi Skihorse, I just got a BFP and my period is not due for another week at least .

I have already had a set of twins and am slightly sh*ing myself that it may be another set as it's shown up so early. Will have to wait until 6 weeks to have a private scan to see!! I remember that with my twins my stomach was noticably pregnant by around 10 weeks as my sister noticed immediately so that may be an indicator (and I was kind of plump anyway)!!

Thank you everyone.

Yes lottie, there are a lot of twins, although as you say - only the fraternal-maternal ones should count. It's interested that your CBD remained consistent - were there any physical giveaways for you before you were scanned? I'm sorry for being such a cow to you a few months back.

aaaaagh It was actually your post in Chat which inspired me to start this thread - because I'm totally in awe that you have a BFP at 4DPO! That must be some sort of record!

Congratulations.

Tested 4 or 5 days before period due on both pregnancies as just 'knew' I was pregnant and got BFP both times, very stong lines immediately.

Both single pregnancies but had hyperemesis both times which some say can be due to very strong hormone levels.

Weegle · 18/11/2009 12:54

I'm 30 weeks with twins (identicals) and I didn't get an early positive result at all! I got a very faint line the day before I was due, and then more positive after that. But I knew I was pregnant (did with DS as well).

I did however have my suspicions. I had (and have!) awful sickness. And a pronounced bump at 10 weeks (am not skinny). We booked a scan at 10 weeks because I was demented with sickness and on the morning of the scan I said to DH "it's twins, I just know it". And sure enough there are.

But if they are identicals I'm guessing that the hcg levels rise slightly later than with fraternals? because there will be a few days where it's developing as one before the split? who knows?!

Londonlottie You can blame pregnancy hormones, I'm putting my tantrum down to "infertility woes".

36 days bed rest sounds like utter shit - have some of this Ben & Jerrys.

I am having my scan next week (6 weeks) so I suppose I'll find out then how many there are. I read a nice story yesterday about a lady expecting twins with IVF. Not uncommon with IVF at all of course... except she only had one put in!

I would be fucking delighted if it were twins!

This is my first pregnancy to this stage so I have absolutely no barometer to judge with - perhaps my current symptoms could also be filed in the cupboard marked paranoia.

Hi,

Congrats on your positive result!

I'm 25 weeks with b/g twins.

I tested 4 days early because I felt really sick and got a strong positive test straightaway. Also the conception indicator said 3-4 weeks and it shouldn't have been more than 2-3. At the time I didn't think anything of it but when we went for our scan at 7 weeks (due to 2 previous m/c's) it sort of made sense when the sonographer said 'babies are like buses - 2 come along at once!'

I think our situation may have been influenced by the m/c i had the month before. I've heard some women are super fertile after m/c's.

However my symptoms have been very light throughout the pregnancy so far. Felt sick until 10 weeks (but never physically) and now just feel tired all the time.

Let us know how you get on!

ShowOfHands · 18/11/2009 13:29

I tested positive very obviously at 8dpo, a week before af was due. Showed very early, had a bump by 8 weeks, maternity clothes by 11 weeks.

Singleton pregnancy...

skihorse · 18/11/2009 13:31

The midwives want me in next week so I'll not make waves at this stage... As I said, I do suspect I OV'd earlier than a standard 28-day-cycle calendar would suggest. I suppose if we see something we do - but right now I've very convincing symptoms - and yet to stay awake past 9:30 so hopefully I'll not drive myself too dotty.

lottie I think it's easy for me to say right now I'd be delighted but that's before reality and sheer blind panic get a chance to set in...

I was watching Friends the other night - the one where Monica and Chandler get their babies and they can't "swap" - steep learning curve there!

I don't know about the twins thing, but I tested early when pg with DS using a Boots test and the line was very thick and dark. Could just be those tests?

i have 15 week old boy/girl twins and the 1st indication I had was seeing them both on the screen!!

even a CBD with conception indicator came back as normal

LONDONLOTTIE twins are fab and not as bad as you imagine it will be You will cope brilliantly because you are only given what you can handle

Geepers · 18/11/2009 17:44

I am pregnant with my second set of twins and the lines weren't any different to my five singleton pregnancies. TBH I don't think there is much noticable differnce full-stop. I feel like shit with every pregnancy and one baby or two seems to make no odds.

Caitni · 18/11/2009 22:07

Congrats on your BFP skihorse!

I'm pregnant after IVF - a singleton - but had a really high chance of twins and I was bricking it but my DH was loving the idea of two. I think Readyfornumber2&3 is right (hi ready!), you'll cope brilliantly with whatever you get (Lottie, I'm looking at your here too missy).

Geepers pregnant with second set of twins and five singletons! Wow . Though sorry to hear you're feeling shit, still a large family is great (I'm one of 6 - age gap of 9 years from eldest to youngest - and my best friend growing up was a twin from a family of 11 - twas a great childhood, as we always had lots of other kids to play with!).

Hi,

When I did my test with my twins the line was so faint I almost missed it. I threw it away then decided to take a second look and only just saw it....I think it's just to do with how early you are testing.

What you need to watch out for is your bump developing very early, especially if it is your first pg where you wouldn't expect this for ages. I couldn't fit in to my normal clothes by about week 9.

By the way, i had quite an early, dark linea nigra with my twins and nothing this time (18 wks pg). If you get a really noticeable one of those and an early bump....be prepared!

Hi Londonlottie,

That's what mine was like too. I heard that they often start below the belly button but mine started just around my bra line and went all the way down.

I can't believe I don't have one this time.

skihorse · 20/11/2009 20:17

Lottie The lengths some people will go to for a freebie ride in a chopper! I'm so glad to hear the girls are OK though and that both are big and healthy.

Twins must be in the air - just got an email last night from a friend who had her 12 week scan yesterday where the technician blithely announced "The babies are fine". They weren't overly surprised though what with her DH being a twin himself - they'd already considered the possibilities.
