hyperemeis gravida: Anybody Else?

Ive just been discharged from my second stay in hospital during this pregnancy, having been diagnosed with hyperemeis. Was wondering if there were any other unlucky ladies suffering with this, and how your coping with it?

I had HG for a lot of my pregnancy and then it became less aggressive @ about 25 weeks (35 weeks now and haven't vomited in 2 weeks!). I would be very interested to hear about people's experiences with acupuncture though. I had to take Cyclizine when it got really bad, which was the only one which worked for me. Hang in there Ladyemmalou, you need to know that it really could get better at any point.

I've had hyperemesis with 2 of my pregnancies (once actually dislocated my jaw whilst throwing up - put that in to make you smile not for sympathy!). I too was given cyclizine, it worked for me. The only thing I can say is it will go eventually!

I feel for you, ladyemmalou ...

I'm 13 weeks today and have been in hospital three times. It has finally begun to be under control with oral drugs (I think ondansetron is best but I'm on cyclizine too).

It was really horrible when it was at its worst. Being dehydrated made me not able to think properly - which was even scarier than not being able to eat or drink or vomiting all the time or not being really weak.

When did yours start? I got it from week 6 and week 8/9 was the worst for me. So there's a chance you're out of the worst... I hope so

I haven't been to work for a 7 weeks - and it's really hard to cope with not being able to do things for yourself. But I'm just so glad that the nightmare seems to be ending.

Have had 3 HG pregnancies - it's not fun....
All I can say is hang on in there, try every drug you can until you find one which works, and you will be very very happy once your baby is born. My youngest is 7 weeks now and worth every minute of it

Hi ladies,

I only found out that I'm pregnant this morning

I have suffered HG in my pregnancies before (2) and am prob going to on this one as well.

I've also been looking at acupuncture today and will make an appointment in the morning, so will report back hopfully with a wonder cure

Just wanted to say hang in there and it cant last forever.

Has anyone ever found that ginger biscuits help at alll??
The meare mention of them makes me want to hurt someone

I'm 14 weeks in my third and still v v sick - despite all the drugs. It's a struggle, really. The only good thing about ginger biscuits is that they aren't as bad to vomit back up as a lot of other things.

Try whatever you can and maybe you'll hit on a solution - good luck

Does anybody find that the Pregy multi-vit makes them vomit? I hadnt taken mine for a week, but thought Id better start it back this morning, and withing 5minutes i got to see it again.

I thought the meds were starting to work, but the last 2days the vomiting is increasing again. Havent kept a drink down today.....Eeekk!

I had mild morning sickness up until about 11 weeks, from then until now (24 weeks) is has been unbearable. My doctor kept telling me it was just morning sickness and would stop at 16 weeks, at 20 weeks etc... but it's still happening. Saw midwife 2 weeks ago who said I should have been admitted to hospital when it was at it's peak but still nothing has been done. I lost a lot of weight, was exhausted, burst blood vessels etc, it was a nightmare!! It's not constant now though, thank god, I just get days when I can't keep anything down at all - not even fluids - but it has eased compared to all day everyday sickness! I've just resigned myself to the fact I'm going to be sick throughout the pregnancy now but am going to mention it to the midwife when I see her next week!

I'm another one.
I had a lot of support on MN as up until a week or so ago, I was seriously contemplating an abortion due to hyperemisis.
I have been on hospital twice and got ondansetron last time which has made a huge difference. I can eat, sit upright and talk, which is a MASSIVE improvement. I still need halp with ds (3) but am improving now I am able to eat and drink well.
It truly is the worst thing I have ever suffered. I would not have another child after this one and I doubt that I will ever feel that it was worth it. It nearly destroyed me and it is so hard to get proper help. Hospital mainly just wnat to patch you up then send you home to deteriorate again. You have to fight, which is hard when you are so poorly. It is worth tryong different drug options as there may be one which will make you better able to cope. This is an excellent website.

Nicky I regulary think and shout at DH that I cant do it anymore and want to not be PG anymore, I have never been this ill before and its totally knocked me for 6. I no doubt will change my mind, but Im already convinced that I dont want another child. I know its stupid but Ive had really bad cramps tonight and all day, and Im now thinking if all the negative thoughts Ive been having are actually being acted on by my body

Please don't think you have harmed your baby by feeling negatively about the pregnancy.
I have sobbed too, wishing for a miscarriage and spent time looking into abortion options when things were at their worst.
Like you, I hve never been that ill before or for as long. It is awful. Tbh, I still don't believe I am having a baby - I just feel like I have had a horrible illness.

Please try to get some decent medication. First line is normally Stemitil, then Cyclizine, then both together and if they don't work then Ondansetron (Zofran). You may need a consultant for ondansetron as it is not yet licensed for use in pregnancy, though it is widely used here and more so in the states. The sooner you get meds, the better you will be. It takes a while to recover and the longer you are sick, the longer it will take.

Ive been taking Cyclizine and Metoclopramide, but the sickness still manages to come through both. I swear they dont even get time to take in the morning, they probably come back up with normal morning activity I seem to have. I have been on them a week and a half now. Going to see my GP on friday, hopefully he will let me have something stronger

I had horrendous mornign sickness for the first 16 weeks of ym first pregnancy. It was awful

Then I had hyperemesis with my second pregnancy.

MY GOD.

Mine eased from about 22 weeks onwards, but those weeks were the worst of my life, no question.

You have my sympathies. Hope you are feeling well again really soon x

I'm in my 3rd pregnancy and although i don't vomit,I have the most unbearable nausea and constant retching such that I can't eat most foods and go off drinks too.

I am currently taking avomine ( promethazine teoclate) half a tablet at night which can be bought over the counter. It has taken the edge off thigs so i can actually eat and drink ( but don't enjoy any food) It was recommended in a sickness in pregnancy website - yuo can take up to two tablets at night but it may make you drowsy and I have to continue working.

Hope that helps anyone out there - it is a truly miserable feeling - and I was very close to termination this time.

Have any of you tried zofran, also known as ONDANSETRON. It is one of the only drugs that can help many HG sufferers. You will have to fight to get it as it is expensive so drs don't want to prescribe it but it is worth fighting for.

There is also a clinic in London set up for HG and I will try my best to remember where but you may be able to find it online. Also there has been some recent research done at St Thomas hospital so it may be worth calling there for some advice.

Acupuncture may work but it has to be done very regularly. I was recommended three times a week which I could not afford. Nor did I have the energy to even make the trip to have the acupuncture I was so weak and ill.

I also recommend asking for urine sticks to test your ketone levels. The worse the ketone levels the sicker you will be. If they reach a certain level then even one day on a drip can make all the difference. Sometimes I think the dehydration cause the worst part of HG. In the states they have a special drip that you can wear at home but I had no luck finding it, it would have made a massive difference to me.

Finally, and most importantly, if your Dr/midwife is unsympathetic or has little knowledge of HG then change drs if at all possible. An understanding professional really helps.

If I can think of anything else I will post. And please ask me any questions. I have suffered three times for nine months. I am probably the only woman who looks forward to giving birth.

all i can say is hang in there because it will get easier, and when it does u will forget all about it! i had 6 stays in hospital and non of the anti sickness worked for me untill they decided to combine a couple but i was taking about 8 tablets a day, it eased off for me after about 20 weeks and im now 35 weeks and ive actually enjoyed pregnancy!

im still taking 2 tablets a day and still feel quite sicky but the best thing i have found is as soon as u start to feel sick after coming home from hospital have a drink!

dont gulp it but make sure u are drinking loads! im sure u will have heard this loads in the hospital and its kind of annoyin but if u do it u will feel much better! its like a viscious circle once u start bein sick u get dehydrated and then ur sick more etc.i only wish i had done this earlier on!

i know its so hard and nobody who hasnt had it will understand but it will all be worth it in the end!

Ladyemmalou - Just found your post.
Total sympathy here from another fellow sufferer. 15 weeks tomorrow with my first and still no sign of the sickness abating. I was SOO counting on it all going at 12 weeks!
Cyclizine is not helping me, either. Only thing that has worked so far is the very painful intramuscular shots, but they only seem to last a few hours so I don't see the point of the pain. With Xmas hols approaching, I'm hoping that having to do nothing all day might help me get better, otherwise I can see another trip to the hospital in January.
It's such a bummer not being able to be positive about the baby, as everyone smiles and wishes congratulations and offers advice about bloddy ginger biscuits!
The best bit of advice I have been given is to remember it really only can last a maximum of 9 months and that the baby is healthy despite our suffering. Others have to go through the hell of health complications for their babies and that must be much worse.
Hang on in and just eat and drink what you fancy at the time.
