Nearly 31 weeks, red blood, trying not to be scared

Can anyone reassure me?

Came home after being out for a few hours earlier and had red blood in knickers and when wiped. Rang midwife and have been told to stay home and rest and go to hospital if gets any worse. Have been wearing a panty liner since and nothing new, but am really scared. I know everything is probably OK and it won't do the baby any good for me to be worried but don't know how not to. Don't feel much movement as have anterior placenta but did feel a brief movement a short while ago.

If you are worried phone again and ask to go in to be checked over. It could be how your placenta is lying that has caused the bleed.

I haven't had this experience but if you are still concerned call the midwife again & maybe they will check you out. My friend had quite a big bleed at 31 weeks was admitted for 2 days & monitored, went on to have beautiful dd (now aged 2.5 years!)

I did have a small bleed at a similar time, I got it checked and they couldn't find any cause and all was fine. I would push to get it checked, if only to put your mind at ease.

Thanks for your replies. Had more movement again in last few minutes, so will see what happens, but anymore bleeding and I'll be straight to A&E.

I had this last week, at 24 weeks, red blood when wiped, over a couple of hours then started to fade away, no pain or anything. I called the hospital the next morning for reassurance and they admitted me for 36 hours monitoring, and all was absolutely fine. The admittance was prob due to me having a low-lying anterior placenta though, and they thought it could have had something to do with that. Consultant said it was "just one of those things" and not to worry. Easy for them to say!

Thanks Stressheaderic. Everyone's replies are really making me think that I should have been checked out. No further bleeding but have 31-week GP appointment on Tuesday so will push for a reassurance check then. He should at least listen to the heartbeat.

The other weird thing I've noticed (TMI warning) is that my CM has changed from thick, sticky stuff like you get post ovulation to slightly stringy thinner stuff like you get just after a period when you're not pg. Wondering if this means the bleed was hormone related as CM change suggests drop in progesterone and rise in oestrogen. No idea if this is normal at this stage.

I'm 33 weeks and last friday had the same as you and on the tuesday had a little bit more but this time it was more like jelly (tmi)
phoned my midwife who said she wasn't worried as long as baby keeps moving.
I'm still not 100% reassured but trying not to work myself up over it.
I was told by a friend if it happens again then to phone labour suite and they would prob want me in for monitoring.

Personally I would go and get checked out. Phone the mw again and ask if you could go and be monitored for a bit.

Just wanted to update that GP checked heartbeat today and all OK, but has arranged a hospital appointment to check the placenta on Thursday. I got the impression from him that I should have been asked to go to the hospital on Friday. Alibobins - might be worth you going to see your GP to get referred for a scan too. Thank-you for all your responses, helped me to be firm with the doctor today knowing that most of you had been monitored in similar situations.

I just wanted to post some reassurance for you. With ds2 I had a really heavy bleed at 26 weeks (i.e. sanitary towel soaked in minutes). I went into hospital and they gave steroids in case I went into labour, plus an ultrasound to check all OK and they did an internal to check cervix still closed. All was fine and the most likely cause was an ectropian cervix which is actually quite common.

Although it was terrifying at the time, ds2 is now a healthy 18 month old boy. The news therefore isn't always bad. I did think though that after 24 weeks they routinely called you into the hospital if you had problems? At least that is policy around here.
