Trying not to waffle but brief round up. I have had 2 ectopic pregnancies so when I found out I was pregnant I had an early scan - I should have been 6 weeks but I can be a little irregular so was not too worried when they said looks like 3-4 and HCG's were doing the right thing.

Two weeks ago scan saw only the sac and estimated 4 -5 weeks, said come back today and we should see heartbeat.

Today I have been scanned and the baby is 6 + 4 but they cannot see a heartbeat, they scanned through my stomach rather than internally and I am I would say a fair bit overweight.

I need to go for another scan on Friday but they have advised it is most likely a MMC.

Has anyone got any advice - good or bad stories are fine, just need to keep real. At first they just said sorry there is no heartbeat then left us in a room for 1/2 hr thinking all was lost.

Am really upset and I know I will have all the answers I need on Friday but would really appreciate so info along the way.

Thanks for reading and sorry for the long post xx

I'm so sorry Newhere.....I have had two miscarriages and found them to be devastating. The first one happenned much like what you are describing......HOWEVER, my scans were done internally which is a much more accurate method of seeing a heartbeat. A friend of mine went in for a viability scan at 7 weeks and they were only able to detect a heartbeat once they used the internal probe. One her tummy they coundn't pick it up even though she is slender.

Therefore, I would absolutely ask for an internal one on Friday, especially if you are carrying extra weight.

Praying that all goes well....

I would echo babyboom - I had a scan at 6+5 which could detect a heartbeat, BUT it was a transvaginal, and they said there was no way of detecting it abdominally - and at the time I was about 8 stone (now I am 38+2 and deffo not 8 stone, unfortunately!). It seems v odd that they didn't do an internal. Obviously I don't know the answer to your predicament, but I would just say that all is not lost, and it sounds like the embryo is developing at the right rate in all other respects. Is there anyway you could pay for a private scan in the meantime, that might save your sanity until Friday? x
PS I remember you from the November 09 thread and have got everything crossed for you x

Thanks both, the hospital seems really rubbish they told me after the very first scan they thought it might be another ectopic and recomended surgery, I discharged myself at that point and the second scan a few days later they could see the sac.

Am really just upset and confused at the moment.

Kaster, thanks I've been keeping an eye on you guys, still a v friendly thread :-)

Thought about a private scan, DP lives 2 hrs away and has just gone home so I will just wait it out til he's back I think x

Newhere -- That is no way to be treated! I'm terribly sorry your experience so far has been so rubbish.

I would absolutely demand an internal scan and if they refuse, definitely have one done privately for your peace of mind.

Just a quick update, scan yestreday diagnosed MMC at 6 + 4 (so around Monday when they'd done last scan really).

Have had a lot of pain since so I'm sure nature is doing it's thing - another scan on Friday 'just to re-confirm' but basically am bowing out of this thread.

I sincerely wish all of you the best of luck, busy dealing with two upset teenage DS's and a DP who for the first time saw a scan of his first child - he asked for a picture but the sonographer had gone and they don't store the pictures!

Anyway - good luck all and take care

So sorry to hear your news, I had a mmc at the same point as you.

I was told that it was the length of the baby that made them decide it was a mmc not the weeks as over a certain length their should be a heart beat. I didnt have a second scan but wish i did for peace of mind.

You could try asking for a pic at your scan on friday, I didnt get one either and I wish i had.

Thinking of you and your family xx
