Lies to tell friends and colleagues in early stages

Hello, I've just found out I'm pregnant( my 1st ) trying not to get too excited as I know anything could happen at this early stage ( 6 weeks). How do I get round tricky social situations where alcohol and mould ripened cheese are free flowing. As a huge fan of both I'm worried people will know straight away when I turn down glasses of wine and become picky about the cheese I eat. Any suggestions? Shall I just go in to hibernation until the new year? Thanks

I just pretended to sip at wine or had husband secretly drinking from my wine glass at the table. I also used excuses like "have to wake up early" or "had a big night last night". Most people won't notice, a few people will call you out on it (which I always found rude bc if one isn't saying anything, it's for a reason!). I found that most people didn't really notice -- it only seems obvious to you

Best of luck!

I claimed to be on antibiotics - well they couldn't argue with that. Or just offered to drive, so I had the car keys and everyone else was happy to buy me J2O's all night at Chrimbo parties

Sorry but the antibiotics line is a dead giveaway. In fact it's practically a codeword for "I'm up the duff". The best thing IMO is not to say anything.

I'm on pg number 3 and managed a very boozy wedding by taking lots of glasses of champagne and "losing" them, or handing them to dh to swiftly down. No-one iwll notice if you don't eat the cheese though unless they have finely tuned pregnancy sensors (had a baby in last 12 months or considering another).

Congratulations btw

well my colleagues are thick then cos it worked in all cases for me - though they do know I have them regularly for mouth/teeth issues If you don't then it might be a giveaway.

mazzystartled · 02/11/2009 11:10

lol gigglewitch

in your case it might be just about plausible!

moonsquirter · 02/11/2009 14:30

Hmm, booze and cheese fine - but how to explain bursting into tears at your desk for no reason, keeping a stash of bread and butter slices in your desk drawer and generally looking exhausted and pale at all times? Oh, and when do I claim to have had the boob job that has tripled my bust size in the last week?!

Think I will have to 'fess up soon

I also find that hiding drinks is quite easy. Or just be in charge of pouring the wine at the table and noone notices. And driving always helps

mazzystartled · 04/11/2009 11:39

Oh and don't let them catch you on here

That would be my top tip for pregnancy concealment.

angfirsttimer · 04/11/2009 13:49

Alcohol free cocktails concealed the not drinking for me for a while, only problem is you end up buying the round otherwise the names are usually a bit of a giveaway!

I have, in the last week had 'cystitis' and 'irritable bowel syndrome'. So all rich food and alcohol were verboten

BoftheP · 04/11/2009 20:55

Thanks for the advice, esp. about the antibiotics, think people will be suspicious if I was on antibs for three months!
I'm going with migraines, say I'm taking strong painkillers and something about avoiding caffeine, alcohol, rich foods as they could be possible triggers.

don't make your fibs too intricate and detailed - seems a bit overboard and your colleagues might think it's a bit strange once they find out the truth!!

just drive to things where poss, so that you've got an excuse for not drinking, or buy yourself G&Ts without the G - no one will know the difference.

mazzystartled · 04/11/2009 21:19

honestly - don't make anything up. anything you say draws attention to the fact that you are behaving differently.

just play it cool, drive a bit, decline any invitations to cheese and wine parties, dirnk virgin marys and you'll be able to come clean in 6 weeks (which might be before your xmas do with luck).
