Spa treatments & early pregnancy

Anyone know much about spas and spa treatments? DH gave me a voucher for a spa day for my birthday (bless!), which I haven't used yet and it expires at the end of the year.

I've found out I'm pregnant this week , but I've just had a look at the details of the spa voucher and they highlight which of the treatments are suitable for pregnant women - but only from the end of the first trimester. Does this mean I'm going to just have a pedicure?? What about the other stuff they offer - thermal cabins (I'm guessing not a good idea), salt scrub showers?

I had a spa day in my last pregancy at 8 weeks and I had a facial, massage and manicure. As you say though some treatments are a no no

You will be best to speak to the spa and tell them how prwgnant you'll be when you're there and they will be able to tell you what you ccan or can't have. Some treatments you can have after the first tri arent suitable in very early pg due to mc risk. The spa will know as they deal with this sort of thing all the time.

I had the same problem last year. If you speak to the spa they'll probably extend it for you if you let them know why. You'll want those treatments more the further along you are.

Thanks for the advice - I guess I need to check if there is anything I can have, or even if they'll extend the vouchers until past the 12 week mark.

Spas are very funny about treatments in first trimester.... although facials and nails should be ok. I was at a spa at 18 weeks with DD1 and they wouldn't even do a facial, they said nothing but manicures until 20 weeks which I thought was totally over the top. maybe you can book something in for 2nd trimester even if its past the date?

Some Boff thoughts. I have got more gung ho with each pg, as I realised the mc risk was practically non-existent and probably due to ignorance and scaredy cat companies being silly.

IMO if rubbing a bit of clary sage on your toes acted as a really effective abortifacient I reckon the NHS would be using it and saving a whole heap of money. Likewise the silly myth that waxing induces premature labour. Having seen at first hand how hard it is to persuade a baby to come out when it doesn't want to, even with the full forces of the NHS at your disposal, I can't believe having your bikini line done would beat syntocinon, a sweep and 72 hours frantically bouncing on a Swiss ball. If only.

I would pace yourself on steam rooms and saunas because they make some people dizzy in pg. That having been said, a few minutes in one if you've used them before and know what to expect isn't normally a problem IMHO and can also be useful in preventing colds taking root and the like, thereby avoiding having to take medication.

Things I have had in pg that have had no effect on baby at all:

facials
massages
waxing
eyebrow plucking
manicures
pedicures
exfoliation

From what you say, I would be inclined to neglect to tell them you were pg and have anything you fancy. A gentle massage with a bit of lavander oil is usually a good start.
