Do you HAVE to leave hospital with baby in a car seat?

Or can I buy a birth-4 years car seat?

DS lived in his car seat last time as it rocked and he loved it, but we've got lots of rocking chairs and bouncy chairs and swings etc so no need for that really. I hate struggling to get a baby seat in a car, would rather leave one in and then put baby in it.

Does this sound good or like a silly idea?

Do you mean, can you walk with the baby in your arms to the car, then put them in the seat that is fixed in the car? In which case, yes I did.

You mean a forward facing car seat?

As far as I know you must leave hospital with the baby in a car seat.

I didn't know you could get a birth to 4 years car seat?

Not sure if I have misunderstood your questions, but whats wrong with carrying out your baby to the car then putting it in the car seat? Thats just what we did. I loved carrying my precious little bundle and felt so proud to be seen carrying her out of the hospital in my arms.

They might want to accompany you to the car and make sure you really do have one in there!

Why wouldn't you be able to walk out carrying your baby and then put it in the car seat?

We had to leave the hospital in a car Riven, no public transport/taxis/walking/pogo sticks allowed.

There was a thread on this recently and as someone pointed out, they cannot prevent you leaving hospital with your baby. You can go in a wheel barrow if you like, you'll just have to kick up a bit of a fuss.

A friend of mine got her husband to pick her up and as it was the first they were pretty clueless. He turned up at hospital, but left the car seat in the car (it was one that could come out). No biggie really, but the hospital made him go back and get it and bring it in so they could see that he actually had a seat. This was 14 years ago as well. So now that Health & Safety has gone completely mad I dread to think what they make you do!

I remember when I was pregnant with DS at the antenatal classes they said we had to carry baby out in a car seat. But then I kind of think as Riven said, it's my baby.

Pee'd a little at the pogo stick idea!!

What does everyone think of this car seat

I'd like to see them try and MAKE me prove I had a carseat by dragging it up to the maternity ward if I didn't need to They are MWs, not the police FGS. Buy and do whatever you need to keep your baby safe, comfortable and legal.

Hmm, hospitals should not be insisting that you use your own private vehicle to take baby home in. That discriminates against those without a car or license.

DH and I took our baby home in a black cab (in a car seat, but we could have also just parked her in the pram in the back of the black cab), and the hospital was fine w that (indeed, we don't have a car and neither of us have UK licenses!).

Ds1 was born 8 years ago and we had a car at the time and we were not even allowed to carry our own baby to the hospital entrance. The midwife had to do it and the car brought around from the car park.

Ds2 was born in London and we had no car and took a taxi home. From memory, I think we wheeled him out of the hospital in a pushchair.

Ds3 also born in London (last year) and dh carried him out of hospital in a sling and we took the bus home.

Totally the seat looks a bit similar to one we had. It was a bit of pain tbh and the seat belt gets in the way when trying to put a baby in. we sort of had to 'post' ds through the gap. his other 0+ car seat was much easier.

I walked out of hospital with DS in a sling. They didn't like it much but ho hum.

hi, when we had DS1 we had one of those seats and the midwife asked us to use the cot (on wheels) to carry him out to the car (which was a taxi). It was fine with us though because we'd never carried him down stairs before and were neurotic (how things change with second children...).

I walked out with dd in my arms. We put her in the carseat once we got to the car. We just told the midwives that that was what we were doing. There wasn't any problem at all.

Like Beehive - we had the Britax First Class.

DS was born in New York - the midwife escorted us to the front door of the hospital with DS in a bassinet - I wasn't allowed to carry him in case some accident happened between the nursery and the front door!

She then watched us strap him into the car seat before we were allowed to leave. I think it's all just in case something did happen and they may be held liable and sued for lots of money.

We will be taking this baby home either on the bus or via pram in back of black cab. Can't imagine they will say anything, didn't even occur to me tbh.

We had the brittax first class apart from being a bit fiddly to start getting baby in your get used to it very quickly!

the MW walked the bubba to the door, then we put in seat they weren't impressed but the recline was better and it felt much more secure that the ones your getitng in and out of the car!

Plan to use this seat for number 2 as well ;-)
