Any advice just to re-assure and calm my stress levels. I am 9 weeks and already looking pregnant. My partner is a twin, and so is his father. Does that mean i could be carrying twins????

As I understand it twins on the father's side make no difference. Nothing influences the chance of Identical twins (except perhaps moving the embryo about as with IVF) and fraternal twins are caused when you ovulate 2 eggs - your partner can't influence whether that happens.

hampdenpark27 · 09/10/2009 17:48

Relief. phew. I had read that somewhere but i couldn't quite remember. thanks l39

nope a slight chance but not a high one. l39 puts it better lol

my sisters are twins, my dads a twin and i have twin aunts

i am pg with dc3 and no twins here yet (or ever this is the last lol)

i showed very quick with dd2 and this pg (ds1)

MillyMollyMoo · 10/10/2009 14:33

How sick do you feel, that's a good indicator, as is a scan :-)

BibiBOO · 10/10/2009 14:37

ID twins are nothing to do with either parent. I found the differences in pg with dd and dts were

  • I was much sicker with dts, more often and for longer
  • I showed earlier, but that's common with second babies anyway
  • I felt from very early on like I had a bowling ball resting in my pelvis
  • I was much more tired (could be because I had a toddler as well)
  • I went off everything I loved, including tea and chocolate

I felt so different my best friend (who is a twin ) had started joking around that I was having twins, and texting me every morning asking how they twins were behaving ... lo and behold, 12 week scan, there they were

BibiBOO · 10/10/2009 14:38

Also, the only twins in our failmy are my maternal grandfather's cousins ... not really a link there

hampdenpark27:

You don't mention your age but, would just put out there that the older you are when you conceive, the higher the risk of a twin pregnancy. You see, the older the woman gets, the more chance there is that when she is ovulating she throws out 2 eggs instead of one. Happened in my case. No twins on either side of our family, but, at 38, my body threw out 2 eggs instead of one.

I went on to have a completely sickness-free pregnancy but did show very very early on. Worked full-time, commuting into London from Kent, up until week 34 and then had them at 36 weeks - naturally!

And I'm sure every woman with a twin pregnancy has fears that she will not cope with 2, but you do, it's a mother's instinct!

hampdenpark27 · 10/10/2009 17:45

Twinsmommy I'm 27. MillyMollyMoo the sickness is everyday, and i'm showing more at 9 weeks, where as a friend of mine has nothing to show, but i think when its your second child, ur stomach muscles are more lax from the first pregnancy. Either way the truth will appear on the scan in 3 weeks

I showed at 8 weeks had to be very careful what I wore as looked so bloated. Slowed down now at 30 weeks and have a basketball bump. I was very sick with my daughters this time is a breeze and its a boy but thats Another old wives tale debate lol

pigleychez · 10/10/2009 23:00

Hi Hampden,

Im currently 9 weeks and have been in maternity clothes since about 6 weeks! Second pregnancy for me and looking obviously pregnant. (pics on my profile)

Ive felt much more sick with this one than I did with DD but thankfully not actually been sick (yet!)

My mum is a twin so we too have had many a twin conversation and family who know have been commenting on twins.
Im sure its not but there always that chance.

Looking forward to the scan in a few weeks!

hampdenpark27 · 11/10/2009 15:11

Showing this much at 9 weeks, i'm kinda thinking that its down to stomach muscles, where they have stretched so much for the first birth, they kinda just relax maybe too much too quickly for the 2nd. lol well thats my theory. I have 2 pairs of maternity jeans, but i'm not quite big enough for those, but all my normal trousers are too tight round the waist, so i'm now wearing mens jogging bottoms. how attractive. lol. I can't wait for the scan either.

I'm so wanting these next 2 weeks to fly by so i can get the scan done.

OP posts:
madmissy · 16/10/2009 08:15

There's so much nonesense about twins and how they run in families.

Identical twins are a random occurance.

Fraternal twins are when the woman produces 2 eggs so in theory it might be that women in that family have a pre-disposition to do that.

I have fraternal twin brothers and thought there was a danger I might concieve twins especially as I was on Clomid at the time but there is just one in there.

Also found out recently that my mum had concieved these fraternal twins while on fertility treatment herself and they are now 25 so not all fraternal twins are naturally occuring anyway.

wispers there is always a chance though........

hampdenpark27 · 22/10/2009 16:40

only 1 week to go now till i find out. thanks to the replies on here,

I'm 30 and am expecting twins..there is absolutely no history of it in my family! They were conceived naturally so was quite a shock! I was really bad with sickness and tiredness so when I found out it was twins I knew why id been feeling so bad!
