How many wks were you when you started to buy things for the baby?

Just curious really. Im nearly 24wks and although this is DC3 Im wondering if it is still too early to start buying things

I bought my first item (a cot blanket) on my 12th weeks. Just to celebrate.
I am now 21 weeks and have only bought 2 sleepsuits.
The only reason I haven't bought anything more is because next month we're going to France and aim to do most of our shopping down there.

I bought the pram at about 28 weeks (as it was in the sale) but have only just got everything else and am 34 weeks.

I wouldn't buy anything, or let anyone get me anything until after the 20 week scan, felt too much like tempting fate. We ended up getting the travel system at about 25 weeks to catch the end of the Mamas and Papas sale and now at 36 weeks we're just waiting for the cot to be delivered.

I was very likely to either miscarry or deliver very early so was very reluctant to buy anything. At 36 weeks my DH stood me outside Mothercare and said that if I didn't go in and buy the basics he would buy them the following Monday. I went in and bought the basics!

I (we) were so paranoid with baby1 that nothing was bought or ordered until after I had been admitted with labour that then stopped giving us a couple of weeks to get semi-organised. Since then I've reluctantly bought a few bits and pieces at 36/37 weeks but still don't like 'tempting fate'.

about 20 weeks. don't remember buying anything for ds2. we kept everything from ds1 so didn't feel the need to but more things(didn't know sexes of either so brought white!!)

My sister had the 'don't want to tempt fate' thing. Her ds was born at 35 weeks, and she had bought nothing. Our mum had to go and buy all the basics for them whilst they were still in hospital. Her dh had to sort out the car seat/moses basket/pram before they could go home.

She says she really wishes she could have chosen some of the stuff herself - I think it was pretty difficult for her.

I was 28 weeks pg with ds at the time, and the whole thing got me shopping pretty sharpish!

36 weeks or so...don't do it...you'll be huge and achy, just want to hang on the sofa and certainly not march around in stores, having to make all decisions at once! Start slow and early is my humble advice (also, don't go overboard, as you don't need all they try to sell you and can save a lot of money).

I had a mmc the first time so wanted to wait until my 20 week scan this time....dh had to leave the country for a month so my mum flew to dubai to be with me for scan last week....planned to go shopping if i had a good scan, however my mum came with a suitcase full of things so now we already have loads!

Will wait for dh to come home next week so we can do some shopping together, although i have been warned by my mum not to by a pram before 34 weeks as its bad luck to have it in the house

Sounds like great advice there from Comma2, echoes what most of my friends have been telling me. I've been picking up odds and ends since about 18 weeks, trying to get it all done gradually so it's not such a big financial hit and not leaving it to the point where i'm too large to fit through the doors of most department stores...

I'm 13 weeks pregnant with DC3 and have got everything already really from the other two. I have however bought a little newborn unisex coat and unisex nighties as they were on offer.

At about 24 weeks. It seemed like the right time. Before that I was scared about tempting fate. I went to Mothercare with my mum and it soon transpired that she, on the other hand, had been shopping for her first, much anticipated grandchild since I'd told her at about 9 weeks - even though I'd told her not to!! We found out we were having a girl and that has also made life easier (so hope scan wasn't wrong as have lots of pink!). I am 35 weeks now and have no desire to go back to Mothercare as I am so tired so would say to definitely get what you can in the second trimester. Happy shopping!

33 weeks (but then my parents waited until I was born before getting anything - spent my maternity grant money on books instead)

32 weeks. Bought a tie-dyed sleepsuit, a sling and a pink pig toy. I bought nothing else for her at all, relied on hand me downs from friends/family and gifts.

About 24 weeks with first pg. This time, after 20 week scan when I found out it was a ds and therefore none of the pink stuff in the loft was going to work out!

shopping? wah? Am 36 weeks with DC2 ... have got double buggy but that is all ... am just assuming that things will magically appear in time ... ho hum ... head in sand ...

Didn't get anything at all before dc1 was born and dh had to whizz out to the shop and get some clothes/nappies etc. I think she slept in a drawer until we had cradle etc sorted out! It was much the same for dd2. I think I bought a buggy!

With DC1 I bought one small item of clothing after 12 week scan to "celebrate" but not sure when I then bought everything else, certainly not til after 20 week scan but think it was probably more like 28 weeks.

With this pregnancy, had already kept most of the big stuff but went for shopping trip to buy new mattress & other bits I'd given away after DC1 when I was 27 weeks & was given lots of second hand clothes from a friend when I was 25 weeks

I had lots of hand-me-downs from fmaily members so didn't need to get very much at all (such a luxury to only buy things we wanted, not things we needed - I think I would have had a nervous breakdown if asked to choose a buggy!). Having said that, my brother decided to drop off all his stuff when I was ten days overdue. I wouldn't have minded if it wasn't in 20 bin bags, utterly unsorted, and he just left them in my hallway before kissing me on the cheek and going! Grr.

But a word of warning against leaving it too later... I know of two friends who had their babies four weeks early. Both had most things but hadn't unpacked them so their parents had to sort it all out while they were still in hospital. The result of this was that they had no idea how to put buggies up and down, or fit car seats etc once the parents departed!

And the being too big/tired to go shopping is also an excellent point.

ive bought my dd a few bits shes only 12weeks ,i just could not help it ,unisex of cousre ,in dec she finds out the sex,then its off buying stuff{grin]

My DH will be home when I'm 23 weeks so we're going to go out and buy everything pretty soon after that. We have very limited choice where we live and I don't fancy doing a lot of travelling plus shopping when I'm big and fat
