winter baby - what were your unmissables?

Hi all

am pg with my third baby but first winter one( due jan).

was just wondering what pieces of winter equipment/ clothes/ accessories people found really useful. E.g. what did you use to keep baby warm in buggy? (am envisaging baby will be in buggy alot with two older ones to run around)

if you breastfed - how on earth with all those layers?!?

I'm afraid that I found winter breastfeeding a bit like peeling an onion every time (complete with tears!)

Get yourself one of those short 'half' dressing gown things so that you're warm when feeding in bed at godawful o'clock.

Ds had an all-in-one suit thing for going out in the coldest months which was good, Sainsbury's did a nice one.

I'm trying a wrap sling this time (baby due in November) so I'm hoping that we'll both be nice and toasty.

I loved the all in one outdoor suit that someone gave us - they seem huge for the size of the baby, but are great. I just laid her in it and legs/arms fitted in fairly easily and just zipped up the front. Easy to get them out when you get to your destination too. If I was just taking a short car trip and we were not actually going to be outside much then I preferred using a blanket wrapped over her in the car seat - more flexible if the car was warmer.
Waterproof cover for the buggy/travel system.

I found I was really hot for the first couple of months anyway, so breastfeeding with lots of layers wasn't really a problem.

I found it much easier to use lots of blankets on the baby in the buggy rather than a warm coat, as they're much easier to remove when you go inside without disturbing the baby.

It's a fabulous time of year to have a baby!!

I found the following worked really well for us:

Baby in vest and gro and thick woolly cardigan that could be undone in hot shops and then used a cosytoes on the buggy (thick fllecy sleeping bag thing) with extra blankets if necessary.

Night time feeding - you end up freezing by the time you hop in to bed so i would take a hot water bottle to bed and shove it away from me until I needed it. Also had thick cardigan to put on while actually feeding.

Feeding out and about - hell - always avoid if possible unless inside somewhere!

That's it really.

A wrap sling (kari-me) along with a huge long thick woollen cardigan to keep us both cosy when out and about

Long sleeve, low neck tops for me for easy BFing access at night. We co-slept for the first 8 weeks which was brilliant for cold nights

We didn't use any of the all in one snowsuit type things we got given - too faffy to remove when getting into a warmer car or into shops etc. She was in her babycocoon in her Bugaboo Bee which was the cosiest warmest loveliest snuggliest thing...

But TBH we didn't go out a great deal for the first few weeks as it was snowing really badly and the roads/pavements were soooo icy. So I'd say a good stock of food and wine in the house and some good telly recorded on Sky Plus were my winter baby must-haves!

You do know that January babies are the best?

Really warm pjs are v useful! (for you, for bfing)

We had one of these all in one things for in the pram- very warm and snuggly for baby (2 snow-born babies here!)

I loved my Kari-me too, especially as when they're small they are entirely enclosed in the fabric.

Get loads of nice soup in for warming lunches too!

Warm pjs with a vest top are key for night time feedings - and a blanket to pull over your lower half.

All in one for bubba is good - and vests and sleep suits are lovely for the first few months, with some lovely hats

Lovely big warm cardigan (wrap style good if you're baby wearing at all) and nice warm boots for your feet are also good investments.

Fabbi month, dd was jan baby and splodge due in jan too

Dd never did well in snowsuit just lots of layers and lots of blankets in pram and raincover on windy days to keep off the chill. I bought a ski jacket for me for miles of walking and would strip off as too hot - apart from feeding on occasional park benches or waiting to collect sister's children after school

Nice thick dressing gown and bought loads of fluff socks from Primark for chilly feet for b-feeding in the night.

can't wear sling-type things since have really bad back. both my other two were big babies too.(3.9kg and 4.0kg)
