Pregnancy

Bleeding at 6 weeks, internal scan showed empty uterus.

Hi,
I stopped taking the pill last month, and had a period straight away. My next period was late, so on about day 31 I did a pg test, it was positive.
2 weeks later (when roughly 6 weeks pg) i went to the toilet and noticed I was bleeding, it was like a period. Phoned the docs in the morning and they said they didn't think it was a mc because the bleeding wasn't heavy enough and I had no cramping, but they arranged internal scan for the next day.
The internal scan showed no sign of pregnancy inside or outside of uterus, they could only see something in my uterus measuring 4mm (said it could just be fluid). I had a red ring around my uterus which they said could be a sign of the pregnancy dying down, or could be the sign of a very early pregnancy. I also had a cyst on one of my ovaries which is also normal when pg.
They took a blood sample & I've got to go back tom for another. PG test still positive, which I know means nothing, but I feel like I'm going mad!!!
They seemed to think it's more likely that i've miscarried, but didn't say for definate. If so, where is embryo? surely i'd have noticed if i'd passed it? i've had no clots?? also, no cramping???
Could I be pg but in very early stages cos I ovulated late? Unlikely because I don't seem to have pg symptoms anymore, or is this in my head? Could bleeding be due to cervial erosion??
I'm not feeling too hopeful, but would appreciate your comments.
PS I have to daughters and this is my 3rd pg.

Thanks brokenbanana!
This thread seems to be very unpopular compared to all the others - have I done something wrong??

I don't want to panic you but it could be an ectopic pregnancy. There is lots of good, accurate information on here
The blood test they have taken will be to measure your hcg accurately. In a healthy pregnancy the level should double in a 48hour period, in a failing pregnancy they will be declining, generally speaking they hold steady or increase but not double in an ectopic pregnancy.
Hcg levels need to be at least 1000-1500 to see an embryo on an internal scan (again generally speaking depending on the quality of the scanning machine)
If you feel worse - light headed, faint, shoulder tip pain then please go to A&E immediately.
Can I ask if you were on the combined pill or mini pill ?
Take care

Sorry you're going through this.

I think in very early losses the body can reabsorb the embryo IYSWIM? Or it could be ectopic, if you start to get severe pain you need to go to A&E.

Like you say though it could be that you ovulated late and you could well be pregnant.

What a worrying time though, try and take it easy.

Hi foxy,
Like BrokenBanana I have no answers to your questions, but just wanted to say I'm sorry you're having such a horrible time, all of the waiting and worrying must be awful. I really hope everything works out well for you.

I don't think so MN seems to come alive later in the evening so hopefully someone will be along who will actually know the answer you questions.

I have only had one DD so not really much experience in these matters. However I would say that the midwives told me that home pg kits are very accurate so keep up the hope.

I've had two mcs at 6 weeks and at each time when I was scanned they saw nothing in my uterus, and classed it as a pregnancy of unknown location until my bloods came back confirming the mc was complete. With the first I'd already passed lots of clots so I wasn't expecting to see anything in the scan, but on the second I hadn't passed anything. I went for a scan on a hunch, and there was nothing there. Later that day I started bleeding, and a few hours later after some cramps the foetal sac came out. I'm presuming it was somewhere between my uterus and the outside world when I had my scan.

I'm sorry you're going through this, I don't suppose I've given you any hopeful feelings from my rather indulgent post. It's pretty crummy, but I was always grateful for the fact that if I had to have an mc, I'd rather it was an early one, than a late one, with lots and lots of bleeding and trauma. It meant for me my cycle returning immediately, and I got pg again the following cycle (am now 27 weeks). I hope you have a positive outcome either way.

Hi,
I am worried about ectopic, although they did say they looked for one and they didn't think it was ectopic. I've got no pain as yet, but I'll definately be looking out for it!!
I was on the combined pill, but had stopped taking it 4 days before my last period.
I've got my second blood test tomorrow, so am going to ask more questions about ectopic and also where could the embryo be?? I'm fairly sure I haven't passed it! Also, I'm curious as to why i've had no cramping when everything seems to suggest mc???

the mini pill can make your tubes thick with mucous type stuff which normally helps prevent pregnancy but can mean that the egg gets stuck. I'm sure the mini pill was to blame for my ectopic pregnancy but there is no associated risk with the combined pill.
That site I linked to has lots of medical information on ectopic, it's up to date and it's not full of nonsense like some internet sites! There is also a forum and a phone helpline if you do find yourself facing an ectopic - I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.
Being in limbo and not knowing what is going on with your body is just horrible, you have my sympathy.

Hi just a quick update. Went for my 2nd blood test today, Friday's test said HCG levels were 583, which are in line with me being 5 weeks. So, I either MC at 5 weeks or am not as far gone as i thought. They also said they saw a sac in my uterus.
I'm not hopeful though, they said too much bleeding for cervical erosion & don't seem to have pg symptoms anymore. will know more tom.

Foxybro99 - i will go with the other comments i had an ectopic pregnancy in 2006 and i was in alot of a a pain and was 7 weeks at that time it was so unpleasent the thing is im so glad off the pain because this was the tell tell sign i needed or it could of been worse and would of had to have a op to remove the tube, i pray you get answers from the GP or hospital real soon! The worse thing also was having to go to the scan department where i saw so many pregnant women and i just wanted to die! and that lasted a good few weeks with them constantly taking blood and internal probes!

Thoughts and Prayers going out to you it cant be pleasant at all! keep us posted pls xx

Hi everyone, I've had my results from my 2nd HCG blood test. My levels have dropped to 383, so I am/have miscarried. They want them to be below 100 for them to discharge me, so I have to wait until next Sunday for another blood test
I'm presuming this mean it's not ectopic, although I am a bit confused as to where the embryo has gone. I've still had no pain?

Ahh i'm so for you. I have no advice about the ectopic side sorry. I don't know but is it possible that your body has re-absorbed the embryo?

I'm glad you are ont in physical pain. If you can rest do and remember that there are people on MN who care as well as your friends in RL

Take care. x

foxy sorry to hear that it's a miscarriage but it's good that it's not ectopic as that is more complex, but a loss is still a loss so sending gentle hugs your way (very un MN like but who cares). It is possible that the embryo has been absorbed but if they saw a sac in your uterus then I'm guessing it's still there.
The hanging around in limbo like I said before is horrible but the blood test will just be to check that your hcg level continues to fall. Hope your family and friends can offer you some support in RL.

Hi, yes, I've got 2 daughters (4 and 2). This pregnancy wasn't planned, but that just makes me feel even more guilty, because I wasn't sure about having another one, then just as I started to come around to the idea it was all over! Now I'm starting to think maybe I do want a 3rd because seeing other people with bumps or newborns is making me feel sad . I haven't really cried or reacted at all since I heard the news, is this normal or am I in shock? I did cry quite a lot when I first started to bleed - was that when I did my mourning? x

Mourning comes in phases, so it's normal to feel different emotions at different times. Just let yourself cry when you need to, but don't feel bad for not feeling sad when you're not. It might be that it takes a few days or weeks for the shock to make itself known. perhaps you'll start crying at something silly, like on TV, and then it'll all come out. Just let yourself go through the sadness. How's DP/DH taking it?

Big hugs x

He's OK. Think he was very sad at initial bleeding, then we both got our hopes up a bit that it was just cervical erosion, then he was sad when we found out for definate that it was a mc. He's been at home for a few days because he's found it difficult to concentrate on work. I asked him last night if he wanted to try for another baby, but he said he wasn't sure. I'm a bit confused by this because he seemed really happy when we found out about this pregnancy. x

emotion will come like a flood gate so be prepared i had an ep. and after cried when my preg test kept coming up negative! i was obsessed when i saw my period, for months afterwards i finally broke down and told my DH he was shocked that he never noticed how obsessed i had become. its hard and noone can tell you how to feel just know your not alone and we r all here for you,i will advice you not to bottle your feelings up speak about it, there are orgs around that your gp can refer you to that can help ypu and your DP/DH to cope- for you both wont be feeling the same way at the same time!
seeing other women pregnant and with new borns is hard!
But time will make it easier and if you both decide to try for another one also speak to someone because emotions can be mixed whilst this is going on also! there are other threads with women who have gone through this so your not alone although you feel like it! (Hug Hug xxx)thoughts & prayers with you and yours xx
