I'm 18 weeks pregnant today and I haven't told work as I am hourly paid and wanted to see what hours they gave me this September as obviously it would be out of order for them to then take the hours off me because I'm pregnant.

I've checked and I'm entitled to maternity pay- 100% wages for 2 weeks, 90% for 4 weeks, then half pay plus SMP for another 12 weeks. Then I'll be off for the summer holidays and I hope to go back in September.

My bump has gotten very obvious and today someone at work actually asked me if I was pregnant- it seems people have been speculating. I said yes. So now I have to tell my boss.

I'm really worried about this and I think she will try to take hours off me. She's started being really funny with me so I guess she suspects anyway.

I have joined the union this week.

So do I have a leg to stand on?

It's meant to be a happy time and I'm worried sick and left feeling guilty.

I would have thought so, it is illegal to discriminate against you because of your pregnancy. Can I suggest you post this on the employment section - when I had a query about some of the legal stuff relating to work and pregnancy got some very useful advice over there. Also, do you have a personnel department - might be worth speaking to someone there before you talk to your boss? Good luck.
