just been diagnosed with recent partial molar pregnancy but just found out i might be pregnant again - help!! Is it pregnancy or return of the molar tissue??

I am sooo confused. I had a missed miscarriage at the beginning of July this year which resulted in a D&C. Since then i have had one normal period. Around three weeks ago i took a pregnancy test as i had suspicions the result was negative and i assumed i tested to early.

I had a missed period while on holiday in Greece 2 weeks agao so took 2tests which both said positive. I tested again when i returned to the UK and the test said 2-3 weeks pregnant. I was delighted until i received a letter from my gynae consultant today which reported that i had a partial molar pregnancy back in July and she had just recently received the results.

I have just done a little research on the net and have found out that you should have your hormone levels check for a miminum of 6 months before considering trying again as there is no way of knowing if the tissue grows back and also there is a risk of it being cancerous (although smaller chance with partial molar preg).

I am now so confused, am i really pregnant or is this the molar tissue, if so, what are the risks?

If i am pregnant, will the molar tissue grow with the pregnancy?

Will i have another molar pregnancy?

I am going for bood tests and scan tomorrow. Very nervous and frightened.

I hope i am pregnant again but want it to be a safe pregnancy for baby and me.

Has anyone gone through something similar??...

one of the problems with partial molar pregnancies is that because there is a fetus..its not as easy to diagnose as a complete mole where the placenta developes into grape like cysts which can easily be seen on a ultrasound.
once its established that you have had a mole, you should be put in touch with one of the specialist centres in the UK which monitors women who have had moles, you are right in that you should be monitored for 6 months, this is because in rare cases the placental tissue can continue to grow which is why your HCG levels are monitiored carefully, once your HCG levels are at zero then you can ttc.
The fact that you have had a positive pregnancy test may indicate a new pregnancy or that there are still remnants of the molar pregnancy remaining...the best thing to do is go for the scan and be advised from there..Im sorry you are having such a distressing time and I hope tomorrows scan gives you some answers

I'm surprised the nurse took two months to get back to you - I had my results (in 2000) back in 2 weeks. Were your hormone levels not monitored after the D&C??

I'd have a chat with a doctor to organise an internal scan... it might be traces of the partial molar pregnancy rather than a new pregnancy. You will need to me monitored regardless for at least 6 months (it was at least 12 months when I had mine) and this will need to be organised. There are, I believe, 3 specialist centres within the UK; somewhere in Scotland (sorry, can't remember exactly where), Charing Cross and Sheffield.

Molar pregnancies are pre-cancerous but which can be very successfully treated if caught early - which yours was - so please try not to focus on that part.

Hi All, sorry for not updating yesterday. Went for ultrasound scan yesterday. Staff very apologetic that they had missed the molar pregnancy and re looked at the scans. They all thought it was a 'normal miscarriage' so there was no follow-up monitoring of hormone levels. The ultrasound showed that i was pregnant again and no left over tissue was noted from previous pregnancy which is good.

They did an internal scan to make sure and all was very positive. They said i am around 4.5 weeks pregnant and no signs of molar issue which is great, i also had a negative pregnancy test around 4-5 weeks ago which they said was encouraging as hormone levels must have been very low.

They will scan me more regularly just to make sure and they reassured me that there is no more risk to this new prgnancy than any other, so fingers crossed all goes well this time.

Sorry I missed this, and I'm sorry for your loss. I had a partial mole diagnosed last March, and went into follow-up. Luckily, my local hosp is the Scottish centre for molar pg (Dundee). When I got pregnant again in Jan this year I had an early scan, and the consultant said that given the clear uterine wall and viable pg, the chances of any recurrence in this pg were very low, so I was not to worry!

I'm now 39+2 weeks pg, and all is well. After this pg I'll go into follow-up again briefly, to check that there's no recurrence, and that the hcg levels drop as they should - make sure that this also happens for you. And good luck - hope all goes well for you now!

I hope to god that this time goes well, not sure if i could handle it all again. With last pregnancy i went for 12 week scan thinking all was ok only to find that foetus had stopped growing at 8.5weeks. Thats always at the back of my mind - but i have to stay positive. 12 weeks is such a long time
