Room Themes

We starting to plan our babys room, and wondered what themes people had gone for?

We dont know what sex baby will be and I would like something a little different maybe. I like the idea of things matching (accessories, wall paper strip, that kind of thing)

Any ideas/ web links would be great thanks x

I went for 'the baby will be in with us for at least 6 months anyway, I'll maybe think about it in a year's time' as a theme. When she was about 4 months I half-heartedly moved the computer out of the spare room her room and put up a blind.

Painted our babys room in a nice calm colour (was our spare room) - capuccino candy for ds1 and light blue for ds2 - then when they were older got decls from supernice.com (airplanes amd jungle or ds1, animls and caterpillar for ds2)

Painted it in a sandy colour, lots of empty wall shelves, a mobile. Lots of space for storing stuff. He's now 5.5 and can choose anything he might want to put on the walls, there's lots of crap hanging down from the ceiling and stickers everywhere. Shelves are full of cuddlies and 'art projects' (Books in boxes on the floor).

Don't worry about themes - they can't even see in colour when they're born, and you want a calm space for feeding and sleeping. When they're old enough to appreciate it, there'll be a rising tide of plastic junk toys to brighten the room up!

Am with showofhands generally. However, if I was the kind of person with the energy to decorate, I was REALLY tempted by millie moo when I was in the dales recently. I love gingham and fruit shapes, and trad patchwork stuff. My mum is making expected babe a quilt in trad style but with modern fabrics. Trying to be a bit different!

We have a rainbow theme, with a big rainbow painted on the wall surrounded by clouds. SOme may think it tacky but it's really bright and cheerful. Plus you really dont have to muck around too much trying to 'theme' curtains and other accessories-just get things in bright primary colours

we had an elmer the elephant theme in our daughter nursery with a key colour of red as we weren't keen on any other neutral colours

we did plain colours and supernice.co.uk stickers as well.

There are lots of different "themes" out there or you could go with your own!!! Sounds bizarre, i know but I am a qualified interior designer, and have decided to move across to childrens interiors.

I am not trying to plug any of my products to you (but if you are interested...... they are all handmade, not expensive and classic !!) but try not to got for anything that is too fussy, or too expensive. You might find that once your little one arrives, that you get lots of blue or pinks accessories given to you and if the theme you have chosen is very "fussy" or "busy" your baby's gifts will not work in with your decoration. You might be best going for either neutral shades, gingham (again in a fairly neutral colour, ie yellows) and then adding accessories once baby arrives.

All I would say (having had 2 little ones already, and now expecting my 3rd!!) please try not to go too mad on expensive accessories, (except for the ones that will become your baby's treasures), that your little one will outgrow !! Hope this helps xx

We have gone for a jungle theme for our DD - I bought some of the Fisher Price Precious Planet and Rainforest decals and wall border from eBay (we rent so I can't really paint), then the rainforest crib kit (sheets and so on) for the cot when we were in the US. Am going to make some bright curtains and get a nice blue/green rug as well. It's only a tiny box room so not much room for more!

I originally was going to go with pink, flowers and fairies, but my Mum pointed out that I'll get a lot more mileage out of something that has lots of different things so we can play games identifying the animals once she's older.

showofhands I came on to say a similar thing! With a cold sweat that I was committing some major sin by not giving my baby a theme!

It is a common theme though, DD had the same. Now she is 3, she will now be getting a theme which she is picking herself, with some guidance!

We're in rented accom too so everythings painted magnolia. My OH's a really good artist and refused point blank to have any cutesy typical baby themes (sorry to anyone who's having winnie the pooh etc) as he hates 'commercial' products being pushed at kids and they cant see pastel colours anyway. He's painted several canvasses with Dr Seuss characters which are all really bold and bright and if little one hates them when she's bigger we can just paint new canvasses and swap them around. And my mums already asked can she have them when we're done as she's been obsessed with Dr Seuss since she was a kid

I haven't got a baby room yet as my housemate needs to move out first (lucky lucky him )

DP and I were discussing it as the baby room will double up as his office as well and we are quite tempted by a safari type theme. I am convinced this is more for the benefit of my PFB broodiness rather than the baby though as we are planning (hoping) to co-sleep and aren't even intending to buy a cot at first unless we turn out to need one. So I don't think baby will be in the room very much.

Our future babys room is also our spare room (live abroad, so it gets used a lot). So, we went for neutral carpet, pale green walls and bright stripy curtains. Furniture is all pale beech colour, and we'll put up some pictures etc once we're a bit further along with things...

we painted our ds1 room a soft sandy colour, then traced some of jungle animals out of a cheap children's book and used a projector to draaw them on the wall and painted them ourseves. we used different types of paint to get different textures (and added sand etc to the paint, we got lots of cheap sample pots.
it looks amazing and ds1 is 4 now and he still loves it. he also likes the fact that we painted it for him.

we didnt know what we were having so painted the room two colours, from the middle down a nice green colour and made it hilly, then made the upper half a paler shade of green. we then made star stencils and painted stars all over the top half, and got some cute wooden stick on animals from hobby craft like sheep, pigs, butterflies, birds and just stuck them on the hills/ sky. looks really sweet.

BellasYummyMummy - that was part of our theory with th jungle theme as well, just in case the sonographer made a mistake it wouldn't be a disaster Yours sounds gorgeous, I love the idea of the stars.

We (9 years ago)! did plain pale yellow wall with a bugs and butterflies border. Cork tile floor with loads of varnish on.

We never did changing etc in kids room, kept that to the bathroom (partly as our house has no upstairs water and partly as we used washables so needed access to the loo for flushing!) so baby room was fairly basic - out spare bed, cot (which was in our room for 7 months) wardrobe and drawers, bookshelf.

we also painted one wall with blackboard paint - it has had an amazing amount of use over the years1
