Really stupid question about moses baskets

I have a really really stupid question about quilts and moses baskets - please feel free to mock me if you know the answer.

I'm looking for a moses basket and I've just realised that I have no idea how they work with the top quilt bit and what the baby should wear in them. So, if you look at this one then in the first picture there is no quilt, then in the second picture the basket has a quilt across the top of it, like you get on the top of a pram. So, it's not a loose quilt you tuck around the baby like a blanket IYSWIM.

So, what I don't understand is, do you keep the quilt on in that top position and put the baby under it in the basket (like with a pram, so there is gap between the baby and the quilt), detatch the top bit and use it as a baby blanket (they seem really thick for that, the ones I have been looking at are 4 tog) or do you take that bit off all together once the baby is in it?

What should they wear (depending on what's the right way of dealing with the quilt of course)? Will gro-bags be too warm?

I know I sound like a idiot, but I'm really confused!

not sure exactly what you mean but I decided the quilt I got for DS's basket was for show only Too thick and the wrong shape to use as a quilt when he was tiny, then by the time he was old enough it was far too small. I just used blanket(s)

Mine came with a quilt thing, never got used TBH.

If you swaddle them, that the swaddling is normally enough, otherwise I just used baby blankets that could then be used in car seats, amby, cot etc...

i bought the basket you linked to and never used the quilt! wrong shape for a tiny baby but it did look pretty

Grobag won't be too warm as long as you use one suitable for the baby's weight - some of them only start form 10lb so you might need to wait a few weeks - and choose appropriate clothes but they all come with recommendations about what you need to wear inside depending on the room temperature. In the meantime get a couple of cellular blankets because you'll be able to use them in the pram/pushchair after anyway.

FWIW I think grobags are one of the best inventions ever, and great presents to ask for from family (worth having at least 2 because nappies only ever seem to leak in the middle of the night!)

get a swaddling blanket for when they are tiny (the ones I had matched that moses basket) then use a growbag when they stop hitting themselves in the head and waking themselves up

Agree with all of the above, the quilt thingy seems to be for show. I have DD in a swaddle blanket, and one thin blanket over it.

A grobag is ideal though.

p.s. it's not a stupid question, it's a stupid idea to put a fake quilty thing on a basket that doesn't need it
