Cyclizine

Ive got hyperemesis and am getting dehydrated..gp has prescribed cyclizine..but naturally Im anxious bout taking it..Ive been naughty and googled it and some sites say its catagory a and others say b..has anyone else had it in the first 3 months?

We've been having a long chat about this, instigated by me (can't find the thread, sorry). I have now talked about with a consultant and it is safe. No one can ever say with 100% certainty that a drug in pregnancy is safe (because for obvious reasons they can't do studies on pregnant women!) but they have been giving this since the 1950s. Dehydration is definitely worse for you and the baby.

Cyclizine made me really hyper and prevented me from sleeping, but this is relatively unusual. There are a few other alternatives if you find it doesn't work for you. The consultant I spoke to recommended acupuncture but I've found it didn't do much for me (and I'm generally a bit of a convert to acupuncture).

Hi Memorylapse! I totally understand. I had hyperemesis with DC3 last summer, was hospitalised twice and was convinced that I shouldn't take Cyclizine. However after the second period of being in hospital when I knew it wouldn't just pass I relented and it really made a difference. I was told I could take 1 tablet 3 times a day but after a week I just took 1 first thing in the morning.

My DD was born January of this year and is a perfectly healthy happy little girl.

Sometimes you have to do things that you're perhaps not 100% happy with.

Look after yourself and rest as much as you can.

roary..its horrific..goodness only knows why I decided I wanted to be pregnant again..I forgot about the hyperemesis!..are you still suffering?

Blondie..thanks..GP has kind of outlined all the possible health isks to me from contant throwing up..I think I know in my heart of hearts I need to take it...cant get the script till tomorrow though when DH has a day off..roll on tomorrow!

Memorylapse, Yes, sadly - am 11 weeks and am hoping for relief, but in my first pregnancy I was sick for 16 weeks and not really better till 19. I didn't think I had hyperemesis until I saw the GP last week again for something else and she told me. I assumed that because I hadn't landed in hospital I didn't, but she looked at me sternly and told me that throwing up 2-3 times a day or more every day was not normal!

I am not taking anything at the moment because I am still trying to work, have a flexible job and I can largely predict when i'm going to be sick, and I can't be sleepier than I am now....

I just cant function at all because I feel constantly hideously nauseas and throwing up riduculous amounts a day..im going to take the cyclizine tomorrow and just keep fingers crossed..I dont tend to be affected by drowsiness so hopefully that wont hit

with ds2 it lasted until 20 weeks and with dd2 14 weeks

It took about a week before I felt significantly better but I felt like I could actually enjoy my pregnancy.

well Ive taken 2 tablets today and have kept food down..still feel sick..but not to the extent of throwing up

Hi memorylapse - I'm nearly 6 weeks pregnant and got hit by hideous all day sickness a couple of days ago. I took some cyclizine earlier today and so far have kept down some food and water, the first since yesterday morning.

The doctor I spoke to reckoned it's been used for years and is safe. I don't feel I had much choice but to take it - have got 3.3 year old ds to look after as well as working part time. Hope it continues to work for us both!

Hyperemesis is awful, i dont think ive ever felt so ill in my life. I was hospitalized too, and had injections of cyclizine, moving onto tablets when i could keep them down. I took them from 7 weeks to 11 weeks, with a couple of breaks inbetween. DD born last August, with no problems at all. Large too, considering i ate hardly anything all the way through! hope you feel better soon.
