7+1 but measuring 5+something, feeling absolutely crushed - ray of hope required please.

I've had 2 mc this year, one in Feb & one in July. To my shock & absolute joy I had a bfp in August, a month after my last mc. The doctor at the epu has looked after me & I'm on progesterone & low dose aspirin & she offered to scan me at 7 weeks. I had the scan today & the baby is only measuring 5 and a half weeks. I have to go back next Thursday for another scan. I have a strong feeling that is is not going to end the way I want it to. I normally bounce back pretty well but if the worst happens, I don't know how many times I can keep bouncing.

Has anyone had a similar experience and it's ended well? I can't believe the doctor would have got it wrong as she is the head honcho at the epu. No sad stories please, it would send me over the edge!

Try not to panic, dates can be out because of sperm surviving for quite a long time in the fallopian tubes and you not ovulating exactly when you think you did (so you could have actually conceived a week or more after you thought you did), also AFAIK dating scans aren't that specific until about 12 weeks (isn't that why they do the dating scan then?). Combine these two factors and your difference in dates can be easily explained. Good luck.

Ive posted about this quite a few times over the last week or so but here goes:

back in 2003..fell pregnant..got to what I was convinced was 7 weeks..and had a bleed, went to epu and was scanned..Doctor said..Im really sorry but there is nothing there apart from a rudimentary pregnancy sac measuring approx 5 weeks..my hormone levels suggested a pregnancy further on so bloods were checked again after 48 hours..bad news the levels had not doubled (something Ive discovered does not always happen)..therefore I was sheduled for a re scan and told that without a doubt..I either had a blighted ovum or a molar pregnancy. Dh and I were devastated and cried our eyes out for a week while we waited for the scan. We told the family that the pregnancy was non viable and I threw my folic acid tablets in the bin..I was even counselled by the hospital on molar pregnancy and given a leaflet on the follow up treatment..was told to pack a bag and prepare for admission to hospital after the scan.
Went for the follow up scan and there was a little bean measuring 6weeks and 6 days..my dates had been out..even though I was sure I knew when I conceived..my "non viable" pregnancy is now a beautiful little 5 year old girl

sometimes it is bad news..but in a lot of a cases..its merely due to conception being later so dont give up hope until youve had the follow up scan

Something similar happened to me. I was scanned and they saw an empty sac was told there was no embryo. I should have been about 6 weeks. Was sent to counselling room, discussed options. Decided on D&C a week later. 1 week later they scanned me just before and there was an embryo with a heartbeat. Never understood what happened. Some things are just not text book. I was also tested for HCG levels & mine did not rise in the fashion they are 'supposed' to, too low, but he was fine.
In all 3 of my healthy pg (1 MC) I measured about 10 days less than my dates.

Hi, I've been in a very similar situation. Had a mc last Jan, am now 13wks pregnant. Had a scan at 6wks, was told the sac looked more like 5wks. Had to go up a few days later after a bleed and was initially told by the consultant he couldn't see anything but after an internal he saw a yolk but no baby. At 8wks they found a heartbeat but told me the baby was 6wks 5days. Was getting v worried, but was scanned at 12 wks, they found a baby, a heartbeat and told me it was after all 12 wks!
In my experience, top doctors, whilst very knowledgeable, are not necessarily very good at operating scan machines compared to the people who do it all the time. Also, everything is so tiny it's hard to measure accurately in the early stages.
Hope everything turns out ok for you. I know it's so hard waiting and fearing the worst, especially after a mc. Have my fingers crossed for you. X

Same happened to me; even down to two successive early miscarriages and a surprise August BFP. Had an early scan when I was 8 weeks but measured 5 weeks I think. No heartbeat so was very gloomy. Turns out my dates were WAY out and DS2 is now 4 months.

I've heard lots of stories like this; there is hope.

Oh, and I had low dose aspirin too.

Happy ending here too. I went for a scan at 8/40 and was told there's something there but only measuring 5/40. Really didn't expect to be so out as regualar cycle. one week later rescan put ds at 7/40 when should have been 9/40 by dates. All subsequent scans agreed with second scan date. He was born at 40+1 according to the scan date. Beautiful, healthy 21 month old. Current pregnancy is 1 week ahead by scan. Waiting is the worse part - good luck.

I had a m/c in may 07 then was pregnant again in the dec. I went for an early scan when I was 6+6 in my dates the measured and said baby was measuring 4-5weeks and was very tiny. a week later she was still measuring 4-5 week but had a heartbeat. 2 weeks later at nearly 10 weeks she was measuring to dates exactly!she is now standing infront of me yelling up up up up Mama having just had her first birthday.

One more thing to add. I did an hpt this morning & it is just as dark as the one I did last Tuesday. Surely if anything had happened to the baby it would have started to get lighter by now??

Don't know about the line on the pregnancy test, but where I am (Germany) they always write 2 dates on all my scan notes and other notes - what the due date would be based on my last period and what the due date is based on the scan (I'm 31 weeks). For me, there is a discrepancy of over 2 weeks between the two dates. Essentially they ignore the date based on the last period as they think it's way too unreliable, and don't give you a fixed due date based on scans until about 12 weeks. So I think your situation is pretty normal. Good luck!

I had my DC in Germany too and they always had two dates on my notes and they were often a bit different.

I had a scan at what i thought was 8+6, scan put me at 7+1

Later at 12 week scan i came out back at my dates, just becuase baby is so tiny and they scanned through my tummy, they were more interested in HB not size really

I too mc'd 6 weeks before this pregnancy and was so worried. Take each day, day by day.

I am now 25+5 with my dd2 (dc4)

Agree wit hyou re test. Strong test = lotsa hormones. Though please don't test anymore, its no good for your sanity!

Unfortunately I don't have a happy story but I'm in the same boat as you. I've just got back from hospital after have a scan at what I think is 7 weeks. They saw a sac which was too small (they didn't specify how small) and didn't see a yolk so I also have to go back to be scanned next week. I'm convinced my dates are right so I am fearing the worst but I just wanted to thank all the ladies for all the positive stories on here, it's nice to have a bit of hope.

Scorps it was a transvaginal scan. I'll take your advice & not do any more tests, I'm doing my own head in enough as it is!
