Really want to stay pregnant this time please help!

Hi, I'm looking for some advice from anyone that can help. I have had 2mc's in the past year and am about to try again (third time lucky) Anyway, does anyone have any tips they can share with me to stay pregnant? I've heard about taking baby asprin but don't know if this is actually true or not. Please get in touch x

Babymeg I don't have any immediately helpful advice (I've only had 1 mc), but it might be worth asking your GP what the policy is in your area for getting proper advice - I believe recurrent miscarriage clinics are generally for women who have had 3, but it can't hurt to ask. I have a feeling I've read somewhere that you shouldn't just start taking aspirin unless there is a medical reason for it but I'm sure someone with personal experience will be along soon.

Sorry to hear about your losses.

I was TTC for 6 years, last 2 years having fertility treatment and had 4 mc's before my current pregnancy (now 36 weeks with twins).

I lost the pregnancies at 7 weeks (ectopic), 7 weeks, 6 weeks (twins), and 9 weeks (chromosome abnormality). The pg I lost a 9 weeks (the furthest we'd got!) I was taking baby aspirin.

Current pg, I was treated in London for immune issues, and was taking heparin, steroids, baby aspirin and also IvIg (all prescribed by the fertility specialist).

LOTS of women who have early miscarriages seem to have success with baby aspirin (75mg per day - not the adult dose!), and I would not hesitate to take it if I was in your situation. It was routinely suggested for long term use for people at risk for stroke and heart disease till about 2 years ago. I wouldn't take it forever, but would have no problem taking it while TTC. I took it for 2 weeks prior to ovulation until 30 weeks.

hiya my daughter has also just had to mc's and like you is worry about her next pregnancy, i work in a hospital and was told by a midwife it can be very dangerous for your unborn baby to take asprin without medical advice, baby asprin thins your blood which means you will be more likely to bleed and could increase your chance of a mc sorry about your losses xx

babymeg So sorry for your losses, just to let you know my experiences. I had 2 mm/c's and a very early CP/MC last year, I had all the tests which showed everything to be "normal" and we were told we were just one of life's statistics. I discussed baby aspirin with the consultant who basically said it wouldn't hurt and if it mean I felt that I was doing something to take it. So when I got my BFP in April this year I started with the aspirin, I'm now 26 wks pg and touch wood all is fine, I stopped taking it at 16 weeks as per consultants advice.
Obviously no-one can tell you to take it, as any medication should be supervised but so many people seem to have success with this, of course it could just be a coincidence!

Sorry, juliet2 but the midwife is wrong.

Tens of thousands of women have taken baby aspirin in pregnancy with no ill effects on the baby. It is routinely prescribed by consultants who are fertility experts - much more experienced than your midwife friend.

The baby aspirin (remember we are not talking about an adult dose) does thin the blood to a minor extent - and this has been shown to reduce the chance of clotting in the placenta and implantation failure - a common cause of miscarriages, especially early m.c (before 8 weeks).

As I said, I took both heparin (a much more effective blood thinner) and baby aspirin during this pregnancy, as prescribed by one of the UK's most successful fertility specialists, and had no problems. Stopping the baby aspirin at 30 weeks reduces the chance of bleeding being an issue at birth.

Just dropping in to second Juliet2's comments.
After 3 miscarriages all before 12 weeks my consultant (Raj Rai at St Mary's, a world leader in the treatment of recurrent miscarriage) recommended 150mg asprin and heparin from the moment i got pregnant again.

He explained to me that the asprin is very effective in reducing the incidence of clots in the placenta which was an issue for me as it was discovered i was positive for Lupus anti-coagulant antibodies (33% of women who suffer recurrent miscarriage are positive to LAA or other clotting issues).

I am instructed to continue with both the Asprin and the Heparin until 36 weeks. It will then be discontinued. Both drugs leave the body quickly so any issues with bleeding would not be caused by them.

Hi babymeg. I am in the same boat. Previously had 2 MCs and desperately trying to make the third one stick!

I fully second Zippysmum's comments as well. I am now on clexane (heparin), prednisone (steroid), baby aspirin and progesterone. If I were you, I would meet you OP and discuss. good luck!!

babymeg - so sorry for your losses. You should insist that your GP refer you to the Early Pregnancy Unit (if there is one in your area) or to the gynae consultant for further investigations.

As well as the baby asprin thing, I have heard some people on MN report sucess at having progresterone booster injections in the early weeks of pg to help maintain the pregnancy so if your GP hasn't already run a full set of blood tests on you (oestrogen levels/progesterone levels/FSH levels/thyroid function test (your TSH should be between 0.4 - 2.0)) then it's worth asking for this to be done to check for any possible imbalances which may be a factor in your losses.

I dont post often - but Im about to start - I got a bfp tonight - after a lot of trying and a history of mcs - I have two dcs already but this third one has taken a loooooong time !

Anyway - I will be phoning the doctors in the morning to ask about baby aspirin but I wil also be asking to g on progesterone injections - I have had 8 miscarriages and two successful pregnancies - the only two successful pregnancies are the ones where I got the progesterone shots...
