When to tell your employer about pregnancy?

How long should you wait before telling your employer that you are pregnant? I am only about 6 weeks along and i am worried that if i wait too long that she would ask me how did i not realize? This was planned and i don't really want to tell her that it was planned. Any advise?

You must tell your employer that you are pregnant by the 15th week before your baby is due - by 25 weeks! but you will probably need to attend antenatal apps before that so its really your choice. As to them questioning why you didn't realise? its really non of their business. I would be inclined to tell them that you wanted to wait until you had had your first scan if it suits you to tell them at 3 months. This is your personal life and unless you have a job which needs to be assessed early for health and safety risks, if you work with chemicals or do lots of lifting, then when you tell them is your choice. As a teacher, I told my employers quite early as I knew it would be best for them to advertise my maternity cover as early as possible. Good luck!

I think it's pretty normal to wait until 12 weeks before telling your employer (and anyone else for that matter), because of the risk of miscarriage before this time - I certainly wasn't ready to tell my boss before then.

As laneyjay said, as long as you comply with the law, it's none of their business how long you choose to wait before telling them.

You might want to consider telling just one colleague who you trust to keep it confidential, just in case you feel sick, faint etc.

I told my line manager pretty early on because I had a history of mc and she had been really supportive - but didn't officially tell "work" (i.e. HR!) until I was about 20 weeks.

As others have said there's no requirement to tell as soon as you know - very few people do that. Plus it's none of their business if it was planned or unplanned - I doubt they'd even ask!

Didn't tell mine til 20+ weeks last time (wasn't showing much anyway). This time will be close to the 25 week point as still on mat leave anyway so no need for them to know yet!

I told my boss at 9 weeks as I'd already had a mc and my doctor refused to let me fly for a work trip as I was spotting. I have a very understanding boss, and he understood that I didn't really want to be telling him, etc, so it hasn't become "official" news yet I plan on telling at about 14 weeks if all carries on going well. I'm currently 10+3.

I told mine after I had the first scan (13 weeks). Never entered my head to tell them before that. Just do whatever feels right for you.

I told my work quite early at 3 weeks for the good reason that I have to walk pass my manager office to go to the loos!
But as long as you keep with the legal time, you can tell them whenever you feel
