Spotting in early pregnancy -- and successful pregnancy?

Hi there. I am feeling very low today and would love some encouragement. I would like to ask for your experience with spotting in early pregnancy.

This is my third pregnancy (now 5.5 weeks) and I am experiencig spotting (the first time when AF was due for c. 4 days; now second time last night). I have had 2 MCs before, both times with spotting before the MC.

Did anyone experience the same? Did it always lead to a MC or did you have a successful pregnancy afterwards? I am so worried, and while I know that the chances are what they are, it would be devastating to lose also this one. Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi joesgirl sorry to hear that you've been spotting, I know how you feel.

I'm already mum to two girls and am now pregnant with 3rd (11wks.) I had a miscarriage in April this year and it started with spotting and seemed to take forever. (approx 3.5wks from start to finish.) Fell pregnant again as soon as we started trying again and was scared as hell when discovered slight bleed (mainly when wiped) at around 6wks again. Went for early scan and apart from some small fibroids everything appeared ok. Since then have been monitored closely and had two further scans, (both ok so so far so good!)The on/off spotting continued for 4 whole weeks and drove me mad but nobody could tell me why! It finally stopped (for now at least), a week ago, which seemed to coincide with about the time my placenta was due to take over so wonder if that was anything to do with it?!

Really hope your spotting comes to nothing and everything works out for you this time. I think maybe phone your nearest EPU and I'm sure they'll get you in for early scan as you've miscarried before. Take it easy and if it increases or you get pain then call doc. I'm not out woods yet either but happier since bleeding stopped and with each week that passes! Good luck xx

Keep positive joesgirl. When I was pregnant with my little girl I had bleeding for about 2 weeks (5-7)and it varied from light spotting to the odd gush and every colour from very red to very dark. I was sure I was going to MC but we made it to 40+5 before she was delivered! If you are having no pain, it is probably implantation bleeding. I was advised by my MW not to have sex while I was bleeding, not sure if it really made any difference or not. You can ask your doctor to do blood tests a couple of days apart to look for good HCG increases and you can have an internal scan at about 7 weeks if you want some reassurance. I bled at about 7 weeks with my 2nd pg. I was terrified. Dr sent me for an early scan, and they found a small bleed from the placenta, but baby was fine. It stopped after about a week, but the damage was spooted at my 12 week scan. DD was born nearly 2 weeks overdue, and had just turned 5!. Hope all goes well, try and take things easy.

I had spotting with 2 successful pregnancies. Fingers crossed!
You're halfway to being able to relax a bit after scan 12 wks ish. It's horrible.

FWIW had v little or didn't notice any spotting with my M/C. Try to relax, positive vibes for you.

Not me, but my SIL and cousin both had this, and went on to successful pregnancies (in fact both went overdue )

I had the same at about 6 weeks with this, my first pg. It was a bit complicated as I hadn't really been assigned a hospital but had been going to the Reproductive Medicine Unit at UCH. I called them in the absence of anyone else, and the nurses were really helpful and organised a scan for me immediately. One of them even marched into the EPU and shouted at them until they agreed to scan me then and there.

The doctor couldn't see a heartbeat on the scan and said it looked to be more like 5 weeks than 6 - I had to go back in 10 days to check the growth. She was very straight with me and said that there would be no way to predict whether this spotting would pass without incident or lead to an early m/c. Sometimes it does and sometimes it does not.

Needless to say DH and I spent the next 10 days on the internet and thoroughly freaking ourselves out. The spotting stopped after about 3 days.

On the next scan we saw the heartbeat and I'm now 33+.

My suggestion would be to try and be as calm as possible, and to stay off the internet.

Spotting with last and current pregnancy early on (healthy ds age 21 months and 19/40 weeks). also had postcoital spotting with first pregnancy - told my GP and said that I had decided to stop having sex until the 12 week scan. He said that was unneccesary and not fair on dh! GP is an older man though.

I had spotting for five weeks when pg with the little darling lying on the bed blowing raspberries.

A bit of bleeding doesn't always mean mc.

I had several days of spotting at 8 weeks with my first pregnancy. I was told it was cervical erosion and not offered a scan. The result of the pregnancy is now 17 years old! I didn't have any early bleeding in subsequent pregnancies.

Just thought I'd post a reply to this thread. I've been lurking on this forum for the past few weeks and finding masses of helpful advice. I am pregnant with my first and have had a couple of scares. It took until 6 weeks to realise that I was pg (despite careful planning) as I had what I thought was a normal period. Since then, I have had 3 incidences of bleeding, bright red just a teaspoon or so, after attempted bm. Called the midwife in tears who arranged for an early scan. Spent next 2 days worrying about having a trans-vaginal scan, had an abdominal scan on Friday morning and promptly burst in to tears when I saw the tiny heart beart. They assured me that everything is fine and that many women get some kind of bleeding. I guesss it's to do with the whole area becoming alot more vascular. Hope this has put some minds at rest

Ah you poor thing - it's so worrying isn't it? Lots of us have had miscarriages and spotting but also had successful pregnancies. I had spotting, bleeding and even cramps between week 5 and 8 with this one, now due in a week!

I spotted several times with ds1 early on. It was bright red and very scary. I went on to carry him the full 40 weeks and he just turned 6

thanks so much everyone. I worked from home today, most of the time lying down. OBGYN put me also on progesterone supplements (I am already taking heparin and steroids), so I guess doing everything we can. Now it is up to nature!

arggghhh, I am going crazy. Spotting started again yesterday afternoon (grey-brownish when wiping, but more than before, sorry if TMI). I think I will try to see my OBGYN today...

I had spotting when my period was due (2 days red blood, like a light period), then at 6 weeks (brown, when I wiped), then at 7 weeks (red, like a "gush" for about 30 mins).

I am almost 20 weeks now and the pregnancy seems to be going great, touch wood. Scans/heartbeat etc all normal.

I know how worried you must feel, as I had a miscarriage last year and was convinced it was happening again.

When I had spotting at 6 and 7 weeks I went into the EPU both times and had scans, which put my mind at rest somewhat. I think you're right in your decision to do the same.
