13wk M/C & ERPC tomorrow HELP!!!

Hi all

Necessary Grumble Alert!

I had a miscarriage at 13 weeks over the bank holiday. Good timing eh,
Had scan yest and m/c confirmed but I've retained the sac etc so have to have an ERPC tomorrow!
Any experiences will be so gratefully received, I'm so scared I've never even had a general before.
And how much pain will I be in after as i'm in agony at the mo!!!
Oh and if anyone off the due march ante-natal group see this can you please delete me from the list, can't bear to do it myself at the mo!

I had a mmc at 10 weeks and had to have ERPC in Jan 09 due to retained sac.
Like you i was in agony beforehand but afterwards it wasnt too bad, they gave me paracetemol to take for a week and i also bled for about 3 weeks afterwards which is pretty normal, but it didnt hurt.
The general was fine, no problems, the main issue i had was the wait to go down cause they mucked up the list so i was waiting most of the day to be seen, not good.

Cakeandfinewine, So sorry to hear your news, the same thing happened to me four years ago this week. The EPRC isn't too bad I had the op after lunch and was home by teatime. I felt a little bit sore for a few days and needed lots of hugs and time with my husband and little boy who had just turned one. One thing that I was very aware of was that my husband was spending lots of time looking after me but needed someone to talk to himself. I hope that everything goes well with the EPRC.

So for you CAFW.

I have had 2 ERPCs due to retaining lost pregnancies, one was at 16 weeks (although the baby had died at 13 weeks) and it is a very straightforward procedure. I found the emotional toll was far higher on me than the physical one and the nurses were lovely to me. I was not in any pain afterwards although was recommended paracetamol if I experienced any cramping (which I didn't), I felt a sense of calmness afterwards too and found it all much easier to deal with. The GA is fine, it just feels like you are drifting off into a lovely sleep.

I've never had a MMC but a good friend of mine has had two (and three successful pregnancies). From seeing her after her ERPCs, it seems to me that the physical discomfort shouldn't be something that paracetamol can't handle but that emotions can be very up and down. Be kind to yourself and try to surround yourself with people who are prepared to acknowledge that what has happened hurts you emotionally. My friend found that the hardest part; some people just brushed it off as something of little consequence.

I have had a GA. They are fine. You will go to sleep well before you could count back from 10 (think I got to 7) and you will "come around" quickly. As someone has already said, you should be able to go home the same day.

So sorry to hear your sad news. I had an erpc after 10wks. It was fine. I know it's an awful thing to go through, mentally and physically. All the hospital staff were very sympathetic and after a few hours I was home. As everyone says, be good to yourself. I hope it goes ok for you.

I should also add that I went on to have 2 more successful pregnancies so please don't be too disheartened.

I'm sorry to hear your sad news. I had an EPRC recently and the hospital experience was fine, the nurses were lovely, the doctors a bit blunt and clinical but only to be expected really.

No pain either just still bleeding - any clues as to when that stops anyone? 3 weeks then EPRC then now another 2 weeks - surely it must finish soon...

Sorry to hear your sad news. I also had a mc at 13 weeks (baby died at 12 weeks) with an ERPC. It was also my first time under general anaesthetic. I found it very emotional - I cried lots when I came round - and I didn't feel myself for a good few weeks. I didn't get much pain though, and had heavy bleeding for a day, followed by very light bleeding for almost 2 weeks. Hope it goes OK for you.

By the way, I got AF back 28 days after EPRC and got pregnant again 2 cycles later. Am now 9+4 and praying that this one sticks.

Am so sorry for your loss. I have had 3 EPRCs. Please don't worry about the op, it is a short procedure and didn't compare to the miscarriages in terms of pain. The op is fast, takes less than half an hour and though you may be a bit sore, groggy and a bit emotional from the anaesthetic you should be able to leave after a couple of hours. A hot water bottle and cocodamol helped me with the discomfort afterwards. I found I spent a bit of time on the sofa for a couple of days after so if you can, get some magazines, books, dvds, whatever you like to occupy yourself with for after. So sorry for your loss, it is an awful thing to go through. I had an ERPC in March this year and have to say it was absolutely fine. I had no pain at all and only very light bleeding for 2 weeks. Period came 28 days later. It is much less traumatic physically than a natural miscarriage, which I had last Nov. I had the ERPC in the morning and walked to the shops later that afternoon. Emotionally though I found it didn't really hit me for a long long time. I am currently 18 weeks preg and it wasn't until I got past my 12 week scan with this one that I shed all my tears.

I'm actually feeling a little better, I was in so much pain prior to msging b4 as I was naturally miscarrying the sac but I've decided to still go 4 ERPC tomorrow as I'm due to fly out on holiday in just over 2 weeks and I am still bleeding heavily and cramping on the one side so think there's still placenta or something left

mylittlepeanut I know exactly what you mean and thanks for that my DH is acting v.strange when I asked him if he's ok he said not really but is refusing to contact his family to tell them even tho I've asked him as I want that over and done with AIBU?

my ERPC was cancelled with an hour to go! GGRRH
Re-scanned and have miscarried nearly everything naturally so sent home to be re-scanned again in 2 weeks.

Oh, CaFW, just say this: so sorry for you. Hope you are feeling ok, physically anyway, and that you are not too "thrown" by change in plans.
