HELP. Yesterday: told I am being made redundant. Just now: BFP, I think. ??

Today I took a day off to process the sad fact that I am being made redundant. And it's not just me -- entire company is being shut down. Is over a century old and will be very sad, but I cannot talk to any colleagues about it because apart from my two bosses, I am the only person who knows about it and sworn to absolute & total pain-of-death secrecy (with unofficial Mumsnet exemption).

Anyway. Wandering aimlessly, I bought a cheap Boots-own preg test today just to be on the safe side, as period is due on Sat but I somehow felt intuitively that I didn't feel premenstrual. We only had sex once this month but still I thought, best to be sure.

Test is I think positive. Pink cross in square results window as per instructions, clean line in test window. But test instructions say it is only accurate from day period is due (I just did it anyway, stupid I know). Can these things be false positive?

I honestly don't know what to think. Maybe I should go buy a more expensive early-result test kit? Or is that unnecessary? What about the redundancy thing? We do want another DC, but this is TERRIBLE timing.

I dont think you would get a false positive from testing early, more likely a false negative.

What rubbish timing for you

If you have only tested a day early then it's probably correct . If I were you I'd get a another test so you can check in a day or two. I always used Boots own brand tests and they were always right.

The redundancy is awful news but you will get through it. Are you able to muddle through with just your DH / DP earning for the time being?

First thing is to be sure - try a ClearBlue Digi perhaps ?

Once confirmed, I'd be inclined to (very quickly) take legal advice - if the company is being shut down, then obviously you can't be deselected for redundancy, but there may be a change in your severance package - to cover lost maternity pay perhaps ?? I don't have any concrete knowledge in this area, but do know that my firm avoids making pregnant women redundant because of legal complexities and vulnerabilities, so it is well worth investigating to see if you can at least improve your payoff.

There might end up being a phased shutdown, so you may end up being able to keep your job longer, or there may be a sale and you could transfer to a new company ? Do you know what the timescales are for public announcement ?

sorry to hear about the redundancy. It must seem like really bad timing on the potential pg, but on the other hand could it work out as not so bad - I guess it depends on how much redundancy you're due? Congratulations anyway if you are pg!

oh god, oh god.

Even if atrociously timed, a DC would be fabulous but I just don't have a clue where to begin with this, what to say at work if anything what to think about the future. We had always said this flat would be too small for another DC and that we'd have to try and sell but I don't think either of us expected it to be something we had to do straight away. With only one income as well ... oh god.

I mean, one shag in a month, and I'm 35 ... it just seems so unlikely.

I am just a little freaked out. I think I'd better get one of those tests for freaked-out people that actually has text reading "Yes, you are pregnant" or "No, you're not". Wonder if I have enough points on my Boots card to get it free.
