SIL in hospital at 25wks

SIL admitted to hosp this morn at only 25wks with bleeding...placenta starting to come away. Docs giving baby injection into lungs today to help them mature more quickly in case baby comes very early. Hopefully it'll rectify itself before that though. Hope I don't scare any 25 weekers on here, I'm very sorry if I have, but I'm really looking for some positive stories about others who know anything about this or have experience. THanks.

I don't have any experience either- although my DS was born at 30wks by emcs due to severe pre-eclampsia- and is now a happy & healthy 4yo.

I really recommend you try the Bliss (premature baby society) message board- lots of very supportive parents of 25 weekers there: www.bliss.org.uk/messageboard.asp

It's good that they are giving her the steroid injections to help mature the baby's lungs- she'll have 2 of these, usually spaced apart by 24hrs, for them to be most effective, so I hope LO holds off til after then. They do improve the baby's chances enormously. My DS only got one shot just an hour before he was delivered but fortunately although he had some breathing probs he wasn't fully ventilated. Every day she gains will improve her LO's chances at this gestation, so I hope they can hold off delivering her LO for a bit longer. My thoughts are with you all xx

Its great that she's had the steriods, babies do LOADS better in scbu of they have had them in so it's good that there has been time for that.

I had an abruption with my DS at 27 weeks, there were other complicating factors so he was whipped out by section. He's fine now.

That is very worrying to hear. There was a lady in our town who gave birth at 24 weeks (only last year), they obviously remained in hospital for quite some time, but so far there haven't been any defects at all. In every way a miracle baby!
A friend also gave birth at 28 weeks, not without complications, but she is 14 weeks old now and things look good.
I hope this gives you some comfort if baby does appear soon x

I had a baby at 25 weeks and only had time for one of the steroid injections. Because of that he was ventilated for quite a while. He was in hospital for quite some time but he's ok now. Survival rates are quite high now for 25 weekers, and the fact that both the injections will be given is a VERY good thing.

I had a little boy nine weeks ago at 27 weeks exactly, due to placental abruption. He is due to go home this weekend with no apparent problems.

However there is a big difference between 25 and 27 weeks and every extra day will be a bonus. The steroids will make the world of difference to baby's lung development. My baby has breathed on his own since birth and only required ventilation for one day at two weeks old.

Thank you all soooo much for your lovley replies and helpful links etc. SIL has had the two steroid injections now, also is on a course of antibiotics in case of infection. SHe has been closely monitored in hospital and fetal heart & movement have been fine and bleeding has stopped, so things are looking better now. She's seeing doc this afternoon for another scan and if all's well she might get out tomorrow. I'm presuming she'll have to be on bed rest for the rest of the pregnancy? And that's gonna be difficult with a 3 and 1 year old already to look after.... Thanks again for all your messages and I'm glad to hear all your positive stories about your experiences. It all helps.
