baby asprin????

Hi I am pregnant again after suffering 3 mc in a row and wondered if i should start taking baby asprin? Has anyone else done this? I am going away for a week tomorrow and would like to get it today if this is the case. I know you can get it without prescription at a pharmacy i think. Any advice much appreciated thankyou

Hi Lizzie, so sorry to hear about your mc's I can understand you feeling like you want to actively do something to make a difference with this pregnancy, however my understanding is that you should never begin any medication without speaking to your GP first.

My advice would be to speak to your GP today. Ask for an emergency appt or if this isn't possible a phone discussion to see if they recommend beginning daily asprin.

Have you been referred for any investigations into recurrent mc? I know that this is usual procedure after 3 mc in our area.

I rang but couldnt get an appointment for today or speak to anyone. How bad is that. So I have read some things about it on here and alot of people have taken it and it causes no harm as its such a low dose. i think its got to be worth a try as I don't want to loose another one. Thankyou for your advice xx

I took low dose aspirin in my 4th pg after 3 miscarriages. I really don't know if that was what worked, but I had a live birth. I felt better for doing something tbh.

You can just pick it up in a pharmacy

Thankyou very much that makes me feel so much better, especially as you went on to have a healthy pregnancy. I just feel I do need to do something like you say. I think I will go and get it today xxxx

I also took low dose aspirin after 2 miscarriages and had a live birth. I saw my GP when I was 4 weeks pg and asked to me referred urgently to the consultant. She did that and advised that I take aspirin, which I did until I saw the consultant at 12 weeks.

Lizzie - As someone who has suffered numerous pregnancy losses and has carried out a lot of research into this field, I would say definitely take it.

Make sure you read the leaflet inside the box carefully and be certain that you do not have any other underlying health issues or any of the contraindications listed on the leaflet. Be particularly careful if you are taking any other medication.

I wouldn't worry too much about seeing a GP first. This is a relatively new area of medical research, and most GPs really don't know all that much about it to be honest.

I would however, get yourself referred to a consultant as soon as possible so that the pregnancy and your blood platelets can be monitered closely.

I took it in my current pregnancy, and I am now 34 weeks after having suffered several losses.

Please speak to the Pharmacist at least if you want to buy it today - it is medication which simply isn't suitable for everybody. It is a drug and if it doesn't suit you it can do more harm than good, it's so important that you get some professional advice first. I know it has worked for other people but I can't stress enough how important it is to speak to a health professional before self medicating. Surely you can wait a couple of days until after the weekend?? Sorry to be so negative but it is so important that the medication you take, particularly through pregnancy, is safe and appropriate for you.

hi lizzie , i suffered 2 mc's and took baby asprin with this pregnancy and i'm now 27 weeks
I took it as soon as i found out once a day until 12 weeks , i dont know if it is just coincidence ?
It thins the blood ever so slightly so helps it pass to the baby or something but it does seem to work ?

Not a positive story (yet), but my mc consultant told me that there was no clinical evidence in my case for aspirin to help, but there would be absolutely no harm in taking it if I wanted, and that sometimes the placebo effect of feeling like you are doing something is as good as the real thing.

I took it from ovulation to AF arriving in a recent cycle as I was convinced I'd conceived The only thing I did notice was that AF was less clotty and seemed to flow faster - I had to remove myself from a couple of meetings at work pretty quick to sort out flood damage. I think that illustrates the potential dangers as it thins the blood and I presume could be dangerous if you have a big bleed.

The purpose, I think, is to ensure there is no clotting or blockage between placenta and baby

Hi Lizzie, I am 13 weeks pregnant after two miscarriages in a row. I started taking baby aspirin when I found out about this pregnancy, and I have just stopped taking it.

No idea if it made a difference (I don't know if I have any clotting disorders because they don't refer you for the tests till you have your third consecutive miscarriage) but it made me feel like I was doing something to help, and although nothing is guaranteed, I have now got to 13 weeks which is the furthest I have ever got with a pregnancy.

thanks everyone for your advice, I went to the pharmacy today and now have the aspirin. I have taken my first lot. I just hope it helps and i will stop when i get to 12 weeks thats if i dont mc again but fingers crossed I won't. I have just got to stay positive. xxxx

I'll tell you what my consultant and GP told me. Three miscarriages doesn't necessarily mean you'll have a fourth, and having more than three doesn't necessarily mean that you have an underlying problem.

What helped for me, in hindsight, was removing a stressful situation from my life. I was exhausted from working and looking after my toddler so I reduced my hours from full-time to part-time and started exercising. That reduced my stress levels and I carried the baby to term.

I have also had 3 mc's in a row and I was advised to take baby aspirin by my consultant and I am now 10 weeks pregnant (which is the furthest I have been apart from my first PG which resulted in my DD 9 years ago) so I would recommend it.

Interesting some of you on here have stopped taking it at 12 weeks? I haven't asked when I should stop taking it but I've heard of some people taking it up to 32 weeks??

Hi I had 3mcs and went for recurrent miscarriage tests and they found no reason but consultant advised me to try aspirin as said it couldnt hurt I went on to have a healthy baby and took aspirin up until I was 32 weeks I am now 25 weeks pregnant with number 2 and have been advised to take aspirin up until I am 28 weeks. The consultant recommended stopping aspirin at 35 weeks - I thought I'd ask even though they hadn't told me to start it. DS arrived bang on 35 weeks, but I didn't have any particular problems from taking the aspirin up till delivery

I took aspirin too after a late loss due to some clotting disorder they discovered I had. I took it up until birth followed by 6 weeks of fragmin injections (well about a week of fragmin injections and I had to switch to warfarin tablets as the injections hurt too much!)

hi there. I am currently 8 weeks pregnant and am taking 150mg asprin and 40mg heparin daily. I have had three miscarriages in a row and was eventually diagnosed as having lupus anticoagulant antibodies which basically means my blood clots too much and starves the embryo of blood supply.

Aspirin is useful because it retards the development of clots which can be dangerous to a developing pregnancy. Those little blod vessels are tiny and it would only take one clot to block them.

Taking a low dose aspirin probably isn't going to hurt you if you dont have a diagnosis as to why you miscarried previously but it may help. the dose (81mg - 150mg) is low enough that it apparently does not cross the barrier to effect the baby. It only affects the developing placenta and the endometrial wall.

If you do have a clotting disorder you would need to continue taking the asprin past the 12 week mark. Probably up to 36 or 38 weeks.

I took baby aspirin as instructed by the cons I was seeing for investigations into my mcs throughout my plast pregnancy. He suggested I take it despite my not having been found to have the condition that needs it, on the off chance. I guess I was so desperate at that tpoint I took it anyway. The thing is by the point I started taking it I had already got past the point of my latest two early mcs anyway - I think in retrospect it was utterly pointless for me.

What he didn't point out when he told me to take it was that it would result in me being under shared care & classed as high risk for almost the entire pregnancy, which brought so many unnecessary stresses & meant I had to really fight at 37 weeks to be handed over to the midwives to finish with mw led care.

I haven't taken it this time.

I think it's obviously the right thing to do if there is reason to believe you have the condition it prevents, but I wouldn't do it again without investigations confirming that I had that condition (and actually that condition is more associated with late mc than early mc). Note that there are risks to taking aspirin in pregnancy (if not for baby, there are for you, as it can cause excessive bleeding) & if it is going to work for you you need to take it until about 36 weeks. I think you need to speak to a doctor about it before you make a decision.

I had 3 mc, on my 4th pregnancy, took junior aspirin until 12 weeks. Now I have my gorgeous DD. I would take junior aspirin again too if I found I was pg again.

My doctors told me "It's not going to do any harm, and it might do some good" (I quote). The pregnancy was successful. (There is also some evidence that taking low dose aspirin may reduce the risk of pre eclampsia). You should still speak to your GP about it - he should know which medication you're taking.
