Right, now I'm very confused,.(about baby's gender)

Unfortunately I haven;t got a picture of the bits in question.

I went for a private gender scan last week (just turned 17 weeks). The sonographer said it's a girl, then showed me the bits on a 2D image. My first reaction was "blimey, this is big!!", thinking it looked more like a willy, but she said no, it's her clitoris sticking up, with the smaller labia around it. The clitoris was really sticking right up.

Anyway, fast forward to today, my friend shows me her 14+6 scan pictures, not knowing what she was having, I said "OMG that looks exactly like what I saw on the screen, 2 small bits with one bigger one sticking up in the middle". The phone rang with the results of her CVS (everything is alright, pfeww!), but her MW said "you're having a little boy!".

This has left me baffled. Surely the sonographer scans enough people to recognise the right bits, don't they? Definitely didn't see 3 little lines on the screen.

Could they have got it wrong?

In short, yes. Scans are never 100% accurate and 17 weeks is relatively early to be checking the sex. (14+6 even more so!) I've heard 20 week scans are 95% accurate, and that boys are more often mistaken for girls than the other way round. So basically, if you've been told you're having a girl, there's always a chance it could be a boy. If they see boy parts, though, you can be more confident it's really a boy.

Yes they can be wrong and this is still very early to tell.
When I went for my private gender scan they absolutely would not do it before 20 weeks as it is not very accurate and even the they liked to do it well after the 20 week mark and even THEN if there was any doubt they would flick over to 4d to check more.
When I had my scan with ds I was 28 weeks and they looked very hard before they showed me and asked what I thought and at first I was convinced it was a girl with a bit of movement there was no doubt that DS was indeed a boy.

Longwayaway, my friend's gender was determined chemically, ie after having had a CVS, not on a scan, so they are sure about what it is. Her scan pics really looked like mine through...but you're right, it is still very early!

So am back to square one really...arrghhhh!! Sonographer didn't hesitate though..

Don't you get an anomoly scan at 20 weeks with the NHS? They will tell you the gender at that if you ask.

I am not very patient you see, so went for a private gender scan at 17 weeks.

I remember thinking "OMG, there is something wrong with her bits" when the gynae said that we were having a wee girl. It did look really strange.

It is possible that at 17 weeks, the sonographer made a mistake, but if she was quite confident about it then chances are it is a girl.

Don't paint the nursery pink just yet, will you.

On that link it says:

"Ultrasound before 18 weeks runs this risk because the genitals of boys and girls are easily mistaken, namely because the clitoris is roughly the size of the penis at this stage."

So very hard to tell...

They all guessed my bub's gender from the 12 week scan and it was confirmed on my 21 week scan. They are good at analysing 'nub shots' and are extremely supportive - it might give you some peace of mind until the 4th Sept.
