Am I about to give birth to a whopper?

At 34wks I had a scan to check on the placenta position as it was low lying at 20wks. Great news, it is now far enough away from the OS.

I saw the MW today at 36wks who looked through my notes and then laughed as she said "oh wow, 2.3kg at 34wks", she then laughed in a strange way and said "oh yes, now that is a gooooood size".

So 2.3kgs/5lbs2oz at 34wks... gigantic whopper at birth or perfectly normal? I am currently measuring 33cm/wks so only a little behind on fundal height.

I know the growth scans can be very wrong- DD was predicted 5lbs at birth and came out at nearly 8lbs! I know the scans and weight predictions are often 'estimates' but it was MW's face and laugh that have me worried!

They get these scans wrong all the time, don't worry.

Though at my 32 week scan they told me DS was measuring 7lb 9oz already! He arrived 6 weeks later weighing in at 10lb 8oz so they were pretty much spot on. [evil cackle]

Thanks Butterball. If it hadn't been for her 'ha ha ha' laugh, I wouldn't have batted an eyelid.
We'll just wait and see!

lol every time i've been pregnant i've had the "ooohhhh, this is a gooood size baby" and a laugh.
which loosely translates into "ha, you have a giant baby and it's gonna HURT"
turns out they were right, they were all fairly big (9lb 1, 9lb 5 and 9lb 11) but all deliveries were absolutely fine!

it's the head size that matters... that's the most painful bit lol (mine all had massive heads too )

i was told that estimated weight was 6lb at 34 weeks and i thought that was okay as still on the chart (just) although leg length off the chart, however DD1 was off the growth chart for height from 18 months by a few cm and is estimated to be 6'4" as an adult that'll be expensive. I am 6' so not too bothered really. is your baby healthy, yes, well nothing more to worry about.

DS was predictd to be whopper at my 34 week scan. He was only 2.9 kg when born at 39 weeks gestation, I fretted so much for nothing because the scan was so far out.

I had this with dd! Also when they scanned to check the placenta. They said dd would be 'large' She was 7lb 1oz at 40 weeks!

Bigger babies are actually usually better positioned to birth as less room makes their heads more likely to be properly flexed (chin to chest) pressing on the cervix properly.

So rejoice for big babies!!

And growth scans are a load of rubbish anyway (av of 1lb-2lb accuracy either way!!)

lol - they gave me a cs because they claimed dd1 was a giant. she was only 8lb 6oz. still, saved me doing all the hard work, eh?

ah bugger it, big babies are lovely, the labour is only part of the lovely long journey of motherhood, and growth scans are rubbish. and if it is a big(ger) baby then console yourself that you won't need to worry quite so much about losing weight in that first fortnight afterwards, 10% of a 9lber is much less than for a 6lber (if that makes any sense)

Thanks all. I googled a bit and found a chart with average foetal weights on. 2.3kgs is bang on average for 34wks... so quite why the evil laughs from the MW! Oh well .

I was worried as DD was a back to back birth which left me with 16 stitches...the thought of having a 'gooooood sized' baby wasn't making my bits feel too good!

I can't say I trust predictions after DD was predicted to be 3lbs less than her actual birth rate, but it was the evil laugh that got me!
