Having a c-section with this baby and having my tubes tied while their 'in there' anyone else had this, or going to??

How do you feel about it?
This is my 4th baby and my prev 3 were all delivered by c-section so i think it'd be wise if i didnt have anymore, but im worried how i will feel after, physically and mentally!

congrats on your pregnancy. Has the consultant made you aware that the failure rate of sterilisation is higher when it is done at the same time as your c-section. Just in case you didn't know.

I am toying with this idea too, 4 c-sections 5th due in October so need to think long term, but have heard lots of stories from failed sterilisations too.

I too have heard that there is a high failure rate if done at same time as c-section - something to do with everything being swollen and in the wrong place iyswim?

I'm due my 4th next year and am just about to discuss with my MW the possibility of a hysterectomy during c-section. I know it is a bit radical but it obviously has a much higher success rate and if I'm going to be sterilised I'd rather be sure it was sucessful otherwise it defeats the purpose as I'd have to still use condoms anyway.

I have decided not to be steralised when I have my third section in sept, because of the increased failure rate. Dh will be going for the snip, safer, better recovery period and more reliable IMHO.

My mum had this done when she had me. It worked fine & she had no regrets. There might be a higher failure rate, but I imagine it's still fairly good odds, and as they're 'in there' anyway it makes virtually no difference to recovery time etc. If you dh is squeamish & won't have the snip, I'd def. consider it over a separate procedure.

Sterilisation failure rate 1/200 when you're not at the same time as a section - exactly the same as having a mirena coil and that stops you from having periods = win win!! And you can use it as HRT and use it for ages and ages.

Vasectomy failure rate 1/2000 - lower than any female contraception or sterilisation.....One for consideration ?!!

Mirena does not stop periods in everyone. There is a pretty good percentage of people on here, for example, who have suffered horrendous side effects from it.

It's progesten-based and HRT is oestrogen-based.

They will not do this without your having a valid reason for it. Certainly not for sterilisation purposes. Hysterectomy causes abrupt menopause which can cause a lot of problems and can be associated with pelvic floor problems later in life.

They might take out the Fallopian tubes, but probably not.

Check with your hospital. In my area they no longer perform this procedure during a c-section because they believe that a pregnant woman is not of sound mind to make such a decision! Apparently they have had women coming back and complaining about being sterilised saying they had changed their minds and there decision shouldn't have been taken seriously whilst they were pregnant.

Hey expat I'm sorry to hear you had such a bad time with it - I know loads of women who swear by it. I know it doesn't stop periods in all but it hopefully will reduce bleeding significantly - but in a very high percentage and of course it doesn't suit everyone. I'm just offering potential alternatives to a surgical procedure that doesn't have great success rates and generally speaking any ill effects from a Mirena are reversed immediately when it's removed so it's not such a long-term decision.

You can use it as the progesterone side of HRT in combination with an oral oestrogen - I'm sorry I should have been clearer. This is a safer way of taking HRT as it protects the womb directly rather than taking a tablet with both types of hormone in it. If you have a womb you need both in your HRT but the mirena can help prevent the troublesome bleeding lots of women get around the menopause.

I don't sell the Mirena even though it may sound that way! But I am a GP who works in a family planning clinic - I get no money for using them just think they are a great option for various different situations.

It wasn't just me. In fact there's one thread in archives that got past 1000 posts and many, many more besides.

And not a one of them was warned by their GP or FPC of the potential for negative side effects, in fact a great many were fobbed off for months by their healthcare professionals; told the Mirena couldn't cause side effects like mood swings, acne, weight gain, irregular bleeding or loss of libido, even though the leaflet that actually comes with it lists such potential side effects. Some were put on anti-depressants or believed themselves to be going insane.

It is hard sold as the fix-all for everything and you'll not have periods and it's better than sterilisation etc. etc.

And the fact that women need to be aware of is that it is NOT.

For a not insignificant percentage of users.

It's the only contraception I've ever used where I was never warned about potential side effects, even told it didn't carry any.

OP, has your husband considered the snip?

Oh dear - I always always warn people of the potential hormonal side effects - hopefully they should wear off as the womb lining thins and therefore absorbs less hormone in theory. Nothing has no potential side effects so I'm very to hear that people have been told that, it's just wrong obviously!

And as you can see from my posting I also suggest the snip. Good luck with whatever you decide OP.
