2 vein umblical cord instead of 3?

I'm seeing a specialist, the last big scan showed a 2 vein umbilical cord instead of 3. They said it raises the chances of birth defects...I'm already 40, but no other markers were found to indicate any abnormalities...baby is in good size as well and active. They say it's mostly now a worry about his nutrition and growth...anyone else heard of this?

My ds2 is 2wks old today and he had this but it wasn't picked up in his scan they only knew once he was born. They told us it can cause kidney problems and he was referred for a kidney scan which he has had today and we are just waiting on the results now.

my dd had this, had extra growth/doppler ? scans as said can be a bit smaller but she was 9lb 7oz so no problems there. Also had kidney scan when she was 6 weeks & all was fine.

Hi. My DD had this and it also wasn't picked up until after the birth. They kept a close eye on her urine output for the first 24 hours and scanned her kidneys at ten days. everything was absolutely perfect. She is now 2.10, perfect and has had no problems whatsoever. Try not to worry.

DD had this too. I had growth scans, in-utero heart scans and post birth kidney scans and all was fine. Try not to worry.

I have this - though when they found out they weren't overly worried about it, and said it's quite common. I've had some growth scans, however, I developed gestational diabetes (unrelated to this), and everything has seemed normal with baby up to now, other than she's a bit on the big side (though my husband and I both were 9lb'ers!).

The only thing I was told was that afterwards they'd do a lot of examining of the cord and placenta, but I can't remember what else was said.

Good luck, and try not to worry too much!

Had this with dd and was told it is actually quite common and more often than not picked up until birth.
I was given an extra scan for anomolies such as apparent heart defect and cleft pallate and told not to worry as complications from this are actually ectremely rare.
DD had her uring output monitored and had a kidney and bladder scan with no problems (I was told that of all the rar problems the most likely was kidney and bladder problems but even the percentage of them was tiny).

2 X Veins or 2 vessels? what about the arteries?

in a normal umbillical cord there should be 2 arteries and one vein (the vein carrying oxygenated blood to the fetus and the arteries carrying deoxygenated blood away from the fetus back to the placenta as the fetal circulation is somewhat reversed to a neonate)

not really sure about the implications of 2 veins (not without googling and we know the dangers of that!), but 2 vessels instead of the usual 3 [1 x artery, 1x vein i assume]is not completely uncommon so as long as they are looking after you by referring you for scans etc (which would be concerned with growth i think) then you are in good hands.

not really sure if that has helped you in any way at all -just something that maybe you can clarify for yourselves if it helps you understand whevever you're next in.

Good luck xx

Thank you all, and sorry I've been out of touch for a few days, but I appreciate your words and thoughts so much! I go back in this Thursday for another scan, they'll keep a good eye on it and it'll all be alright! Thank you everyone!

I had this with dS2 - 2 vessels i.e. 1 vein and onee artery (not 2). I had a growth scan at 33 weeks and all was fine . I was told it could be a soft marker for some disorders, but as all else looked fine it was just one of those things. DS2 is now 6 months and thriving

I had a scan yesterday and this was picked up on my scan. Have another scan in 4 weeks - great to know majority of babies are fine but it is a worry!
