I know you take folic acid when trying to conceive and for your first trimester but is it beneficial to carry on taking it throughout your pregnancy?

I don't think it does any harm... not sure if it has added benefits... I'm still taking it at 17 weeks just because I want to use them up (prob won't have any more babies now). Lots of pregnancy multivits have folic acid in them, and they're intended to be taken throughout pregnancy.

I'm just past 12 weeks and was wondering if I should stop taking it now. Most things you read seem to say that you can stop after 12 week, as this covers the period where there is the greatest risk of spinal chord defects. There doesn't seem to be any particular benefit from continuing to take it after 12 weeks.

I have read that they now think it might help prevent pre enclampsia in some people, if you keep taking it throughout your pregnancy.

Ask your doc, mine told me to take it till 16 weeks, so cant be any harm in taking it, but maybe it was because I hadn't been taking it before I concieved.
