Metoclopramide for hyperemesis, anyone been prescribed this?

I have been prescribed the above on a dose of 10ml x 3 daily, to replace the cyclizine I was previously taking.

I had been taking the other for the last 6 weeks? or so, and I had respite of a couple of weeks, but had to up it to 2-3 daily for it to help and the side effects of tiredness were crippling. This was prescribed with much reluctance by a duty Dr, and although my GP was fine with this, he had been trying not to prescribe anything at all!

My GP said that now I am further on into the pregnancy other drugs can now be taken, and that So Metoclopramide is now recommended and is safe to take in pg. Done a bit of research before I take it, and it appears to be safe to take at any stage of pregnancy.

Just wondering if anyone has taken it, and whether there might be any side effects I should look out for ie drowsiness etc? GP said to start on one, go up to 3 if I find i need to.

am fairly certain that was what i had, it rings a bell anyway and i certainly had SOMETHING...

i was going to say chin up, but actually it is more likely to be down...the pan...sorry...

I know at least two women who have taken this during pregnancy, everything was fine.

lol, yes I have too much time on my hands as I am not at currently at work due to being sick!

I have some of the cyclizine left too, so if this does not work I can return to the cyclizine.

I am just hoping it will become less sporadic as I cannot rely on much routine atm, including work, they have had to take most of my work from me as I can't guarantee I am there to do it

How far are you now Pavlov dear? (tis me with the kettle ha, try to keep up )

I had it by injection at about 65 weeks, and also after ds was born, it worked a treat - I still keep a little packet in the cupboard and it's brilliant.

Wonder if you are thinking of something else Mayor - hopefully! I find it works straight away. Good luck Pav.

lou33 - that is positive! GP said it should be less drowsy and also help my intenstines/bowels to process the food and do their job properly, rather than just stop the sickness but have it just sit there which I was finding with the cyclizine. Can't remember the medical word he used - sorry!

Lou - that's great to hear, I ended up not taking it for most of my HG, had stemetil and cyclizine etc which weren't very good - so was dreading getting pg again - but if it's actually Ok to take long term during pregnancy I might How soon can one start?

I am 21 wks. Had some time off between 17.5 weeks and last friday.

I wonder why it was not prescribed in the first place .

I take this for a stomach problem I have and I took it during pregnancy and my gastro consultant was very confident it was fine and he had loads of experience with it.

No side effects and brilliantly effective in my experience! Hope it helps you too.

well I'd guess they just don't like to give you the strong stuff full time at the start, just in case it has some weird effect - there's so little research in pregnancy, no proper studies as it'd be considered putting babies at risk iyswim. So they are going on anecdotal evidence.

The jab was a one off - but I shall deffo ask for it next time, as early as poss.

Sorry you are still feeling yucky. Was your first pg this bad?

perhaps i am thinking of something else...had it around 14 wks i think...def didn't work though...nor did the injection in the bum at 9 wks, or the other one at 27 wks...

sorry, i'm not helping at all am i?

Lucy - no not this bad. I had it quite badly for the first few months, then I found ways to control it, mainly by mostly sleeping! I also found eating at set times, and not past 6pm at night I could reduce it to about once a day, had a break for 4 weeks in third trimester then returned with a vengeance before I had DD!

This time, I had no let up at all until 17.5 wks, and now its returned again .

Hopefully this medication will work better than cyclizine.

drugs in the bum? Why did i not get this? Not that I was desperate for a bum injection or anything....but...still.... Might have to have words with gp about this!

i had it in the first trimester with all mine, i really felt like death was a better option before i started taking them

(i was not great at being pg lol)

Well I took it until 6 weeks when I found out I was pregnant, I then stopped all my meds and the morning sickness/stomach problem kicked in about four weeks later, tried cyclizine which didn't work at then went back to metaclopramide at about 11/12 weeks and stayed on it on and off until the week before term.

Lol Mayor I'm sure you're not weird.

Pav - how horrid. You are v v brave lady for doing it again. Mine kind of eased off about 14/15 weeks, in a 'I can just about do something around the house' kind of way, then went mostly during the twenties. I still got that gagging thing all the way through.

One thing was staying hydrated - I tried not to worry about eating but drank as much as poss instead - i liked icy milkshakes, weirdly! and after a day of that I felt hungry again often. I think I could have helped myself loads by drinking more - especially in the hot weather.

I hope this works for you, I found cyclizine rubbish too!

Wow, thanks Ewe - excellent. Finally I might be able to face pregnancy again! i know what you mean Lou - I wanted to die as well. Sorry for hijacking your thread a bit Pavlov!

Btw they gave me the jab in my thigh, when I couldn't take anything by mouth.

Metocloprimide was a godsend in my last pg, but this time cyclizine seemed to work so have stuck with it. hope you feel better soon Pav.

Lucy - yes the dehydration is the worst. I was lucky to not get hospitalised just before I was prescribed cyclizine as I was so dehydrated, but the meds worked just enough to let me hold down some liquids to keep me away from the drip!

Now, although I am being sick, I am able to hold down half the liquid I drink in the day. I find I cannot drink just water, it needs to have something in it, idealy something tart like lime, but really really weak lemon or orange is ok too.

I had been able to drink the off coffee over the last few weeks too, but not any more.

I read an interesting article about the possible reasons for hyperemesis - that it demonstrates a highly efficient detox system, where the body is ultra efficient at removing possible toxins from the body, the filtration process is good, and this is why it is suggested that severe sickness and high IQ is linked, and there are hardly any toxins in the body and thus being passed to the baby around the time of brain development.

i was going to be hospitalised if hte metaclopromide didnt work, so i was quite jubilant that it did
