v.low amniotic fluid at 30 weeks. is this devasting news or am i being too negative

i had a growth scan today due being diagnosed with gesation diabetes and placenta previa. baby estimated to weigh 4lb5oz so doing well however amniotic fluid index was 63 ( normally range is 90-234 0. i am in shock and totally worn out by bad news (i feel like world is about to come crushing down as too many bad things happening at once although been told all un-related).

i am hoping that someone has been through this (low amniotic fluid at 30 weeks) and can shed light on what to expect. i have been told to come back in 1 week for re-scan to see if any trends. then possible steriod injections given and then who knows? can anyone put this into perspective?

baby movements fine as were doppler and other checks...stomach and bladder had fluid inside too

last scan was at 27 weeks and all was well. regular movements well no less than before just a bit more powerful. I am not sure how i can get through this further setback. feeling really down this evening. also have SPD i feel almost embarrased listing all my ailments.

above all feeling so guilty that my DD1 (aged 4) is missing out on her 'normal' mum whilst i am stressed about all these complications. DH is mainly caring for her and i am just doing the routine things like keeping her clothed clean and fed. very little interaction otherwise just trying to keep a brave face on in front of her. Can't remeber when i last read her a bedtime story.

Forevermore - I don't have any info about low amniotic fluid but just wanted to say, don't feel guilty about your DD. I had dreadful PUPPPs rash from 35 weeks onwards and basically handed care of DS1 (2.5years) to DH, Mum, MIL and nursery until I gave birth. He was fine. Just try to relax, you can always sit on sofa and read her a nice story for some together time. You can make plenty of fuss of her once baby arrives. She will be fine.

It's nothing to worry about at all, stop panicing

My waters went at 30 weeks, just all leaked out. I was scanned several times over the next few weeks but everything my body produced was leaking straight out.

The hospital gave me steroid injections, and took blood every few days to check for infection, and scanned me every week as well.

I was going to be induced once I had reached 35 weeks but DS made an appearance at 34 weeks. He was kept in scbu for 5 days to check he was ok but apart froma little jaundice he was perfect.

Do not worry, enjoy every second.

I had SPD too

Forever - just think of nice easy things you can do sat down i.e. reading books, a jigsaw at the kitchen table, sticker books, a new DVD to watch together etc. That is how I coped - I couldn't even hug DS1 properly as my rash was so itchy and sore and covered my entire body. I do understand how you feel but try not to get too down about it. Second pregnancies are SO hard, guilt filled affairs

jaquelinehyde you story is very reassuring thanks. Do you remember how low your levels were at all? did you drink loads of water?

Had very similar situation to jacquelinehyde and the baby was ok with no fluid. I couldn't tell you the numbers but when the membranes broke, all the waters came out and that was it.

Do you know if your waters have gone or if the membranes are still intact and it's low fluid instead?

they think membranes in tact because i have no bleeding (apparently with placenta previa i would ge bleeding if membranes had gone).

DD1 was born at 35.5 spontaneously and i discovered later that waters had all but gone without me knowing. no symptoms and hadn't shown up on scans up to 33 weeks.

My levels were 0

The lady who scanned me to check the levels said she had never scanned anyone and found no fluid!

I had to wear a really good sanitary towel all the time because my body leaked every drop of fluid it made.

forever, sorry to hear you have been given something else to worry you. These stories sound positive though. I am like you in terms of seem to be be acquiring ailmesnt by the week - SPD, GD, too much fluid, and now, the beginnings of PUPPS too. i also feel that my dd is suffering; she is really active and i just cant keep up. buit i watch tv with her and we talk about things, i have spoilt her with material things like books and stickers but it is the best i can manage for now. They will be fine, please try not to worry.

I had an AFI of 0 with DS too by 25 weeks, he arrived early but is fine

That was due to prom though but i guess the risks are the same.

My consultant told me as long as they get past 24/5 weeks they shoulf be ok as thats when the lungs develop.

My waters went at 30 weeks with dd too, i dont know if i ever acculamated any more as i was only scanned once, she arrived early too though and is fine

worzsel thanks for sharing; when did you deliver your babies and how long did they stay in SCBU?

Ds was 25+5 after prom at 22+4, DD was 32+2 after prom at 30 weeks.

10 weeks and 4 weeks in scbu, both perfect

just thought i would update as i have been in hospital for a week. AFI went down to 30 (normal range of 90-250) and i was given steriods and told i would be delivered. had twice daily CTG monitoring and twice weekly doppler fluid scan. then just before final decision had a scan (with a new radiographer, it had always een the same one before) and the AFI was 110 and baby now 4lb 12 at 32 weeks (although she was always growing anyway) and I was discharged and told to now be monitored at an outpaitent

we had visited SCBU and everything and been on a real emotional rollercoaster and now have been offered this reprieve. consultant was alos saying that he wished i was scnned by someone else so that he could eliminate human error and low and behold when a new person comes along all is well was it just coincidence or could waters have formed again? no evidence of ruptured membranes either and no apprent leaking.

anyway i will be re-scanned at 33 weeks and told to just rest and keep an eye of movements which i always do anyway.

does this sound strange. could the last radiographer be the wrong one!

forevermore, sounds like you've had a really worrying time. from what i hear, waters do reach a peak amount and then even out - i have had the opposite, too much fluid, and just when they were telling me i'd deliver soon, had steroids etc, i have been scanned by someone different and they are nearly normal amounts. i do wonder about human error but am trying to accept that things may be going our way!
